  1. A probiotic called Bio-K is what my doctor ordered after big events like surgery, etc. It has to be refrigerated, is gluten-free, and there are soy, and rice-based versions. Then follow up with standard probiotics in a capsule. I would recommend (and I am not a doctor) just eating protein, veggies (avoiding those grown underground like carrots...
  2. The problem is that everyone is different, so you can not put a time on healing. (I think you know that already.) My main symptom was anemia, but between my blood test and biopsy, I ate a loaf of bread a day (plus other goodies) as a final farewell gesture. Then I got the tummy symptoms. Took me about six weeks to feel an improvement. Took me over six...
  3. That is a lot of supplements for such a young kid! I would suggest stopping them all to see if that brings relief. Gee, the fish oil alone, if not taken with the first bite of food during a heavy meal, can make even me sick or is it gummy fish oil? I have been taking it to increase my HDL to help with heart disease because I am old. Why is she taking...
  4. I managed a mixed kitchen for over a decade. It is possible -- you just have to be extra careful. I think you can do a search and get lots of tips on this forum. Cross contamination is a major and real concern. For years, I handled it by being the only person to prepare food in my kitchen. I only have one kid who can eat gluten, but my husband can...
  5. I hear ya! But I have the best "gluten meter" -- my husband! One glutening and he is cranky and snores heavily that very day ( never snores otherwise!). Makes it easier to track down a gluten source which is almost ALWAYS from a restaurant. I can pretty much trust manufacturers.
  6. I adore my cast iron pans and lids. I ran them through the clean cycle in my oven and then reasoned them. You can pick them up at garage sales cheap. I still use my ancient Revereware pots which are superior to the current pot manufactured -- well scrubbed of course!
  7. Since I was diagnosed the same year as my 25th wedding anniversary, I bought lots of stuff! I was worth it and let's face it, my kitchen wares were old. I already was running a partial gluten free kitchen for my hubby, but I deserved some new things! I have to cook a lot! Can you believe I am still using the same Mr. Coffee with the original carafe...
  8. Unless you have nodules or cancer runs in your family, you probably do not need an ultrasound. I have nodules, but they have not increased in size in 20 years. Your TS is probably just fine. I can function well at that level. To bring your thyroid antibodies down, you may consider taking a tiny dose of thyroid, but I would wait to see if they decrease...
  9. The gene test is a good tool used to rule out celiac disease when celiac disease blood tests or biopsies are inconclusive. Some 30% of folks carry the genes, but only a small amount (less than 1%??) develop celiac disease. You can see that just the gene test is not very helpful.
  10. Well, there is the Principal or VP. They are there to help too. Or the school nurse?
  11. Yes. Everyone is different. Some take months to years to heal. Good luck!
  12. What does "often" mean, regarding the cheese? Milk proteins for cow, milk or sheep are very close. Stop all cheese for now. I would suggest cutting out all grains temporarily and do not eat processed foods. Keep a journal to record foods and symptoms. Fill up on fats, proteins like eggs if you do not eat meat, veggies and fruit. Good luck!
  13. Find out how many samples they took by asking for copies. You should always get copies of all lab reports. Also, take copies of the testing requirements you saw on the University of Chicago's celiac website and I discuss with your doctor. I really do not think you were back on gluten long enough. Perhaps they will retest. If they refuse, you can always...
  14. Can you talk to a school counselor or a trusted teacher? Teachers or office staff usually work for days after students are released for the summer. Perhaps your finals could be postponed for a few days. I can not imagine feeling sick and going through finals, but I have been in situations that have required me to push through. Let's see if any teachers...
  15. Go to the University of Chicago's celiac website for complete testing info!
  16. It sounds like you have Celiac. You can ask the doctor for copies of all your labs. It is important to keep track of them. Talk to your Ped about your endo results and improvement with the gluten-free diet. Perhaps test only those kids with symptoms to start? Anemia was my only symptom for celiac disease. My husband is not diagnosed formerly...
  17. I am allergic to dairy (mild) and as I have either aged or because of celiac disease, I am also lactose intolerant. Milk will mess with both my nose and gut. Constipation is one symptom of the intolerance. Are you consuming milk? Eating lots Fiber-filled veggies? I eat them for breakfast!
  18. Welcome, Jennifer! Be sure to read the newbie section and learn about tips to help you heal faster and avoid hidden gluten or getting cross contaminated. https://www.celiac.com/forums/topic/91878-newbie-info-101/ FYI. Although I was diagnosed last year, my husband was not (went gluten-free at the advice of my allergist and his PCP /GP). Thirteen...
  19. Go to Tucson, Arizona. Gourmet Girls is 100% gluten free! It is HEAVEN!!!!!! It is filled with celiacs and everyone is so friendly. Their French bread is to die for..... Open Original Shared Link
  20. Go buy a bag of Nestle chocolate chips and follow the cookie recipe. Sub out the flour for Pamela's gluten-free cup-for-cup. You will not miss gluten cookies after eating a hot batch of these cookies. If Pamela's is not available try a flour blend that contains a gum (Xanthan or guar). avoid flours with garbanzo beans. In my opinion, it tastes odd....
  21. Becky, I can relate. I had been having swings the two years prior to my celiac disease dx and almost a year after. It was crazy. I really worried about the hyper times as my mom has Graves and has permanent eye damage. Luckily, I have not changed my thyroid dosage in months! Yeah! I think it was really related to hormonal changes. I blame it on...
  22. If it were me, I would bet the almond milk or cashew butter because I am allergic to tree nuts, plus nuts are hard to digest in general with intestinal damage. Coconut makes me sick starting with nausea and ingestion and continuing on! I have tested coconut milk, organic oil, coconut frozen dessert and just plain old coconut and it makes me sick. I can...
  23. How can a gene be so strong that it is not watered down by introduction of new genes from members who marry into the family? I have a very strong feeling that most of my extended family has issues with gluten and I think there is a link between celiac disease and gallbladder disease. Only one Aunt gave up gluten and found relief per the advice of her chiropractor...
  24. Well, you have celiac disease and that creates inflammation! Remember , it takes months or years to rebuild that villi. Plus, think of how your intestines may feel after a good dose of oily, fatty foods that come down the tract and your gallbladder can not squeeze enough bile out to digest the oily, fatty food. (I am all for fat-filled diet since I am...
