ARCHIVED Snickerdoodles Recipe?
Guhlia replied to holiday16's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
If you found a recipe you like, stick with it. Use the following flour substitution and they should turn out just like pre-dx. 3 parts white rice flour, 2 parts potato starch, 1 part tapioca starch. Add 1 teaspoon xantham gum per 1-1/2 cups flour. -
MSG is gluten free, however, the soy sauce used in most chinese dishes is NOT gluten free. That would likely be your problem. You could make most of these dishes at home using gluten free soy sauce in the recipe. Enterolab is a great tool for those who don't have their doctor's support in diagnosis. However, it can only tell you if you're gluten sensitive...

ARCHIVED New Here And Need Some Help
Guhlia replied to sjust's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I know there is at least on Swanson chicken broth that is NOT gluten free. It clearly lists wheat starch within the ingredients. I think it might be the organic one. It made me pretty sick before I noticed. Also, are you using lotion or nipple cream? Sometimes those things contain vitamin E which can be derived from a wheat source. It would be very easy for... -
ARCHIVED Biting Inside Of My Cheeks
Guhlia replied to mamaloca2's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I am mildly OCD and I compulsively scratch my lips with my teeth. I'm assuming this is about the same as what you guys are talking about. Luckily, most of my OCD symptoms disappeared when I went gluten free. Unfortunately, this one hasn't gone away completely. It has gotten better though since going gluten free. I think there's definitely a connection with... -
ARCHIVED Does Being A Parent Not Mean Anything To Some?
Guhlia replied to blueeyedmanda's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Glad you got a smile, Amanda... This board is great for that, isn't it? -
Try using a traditional recipe (sorry, can't help you there) and substituting the following flour mix: 3 parts white rice, 2 parts potato starch, 1 part tapioca starch. Add 1 teaspoon of xantham gum per 1-1/2 cups flour used. You can sub this mix cup for cup for all purpose flour. Hope that helps.

ARCHIVED Getting Pregnant But Not On The Diet
Guhlia replied to KatieB's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
If you're planning on getting pregnant you absolutely need to be 100% gluten free, for your baby's sake. Untreated Celiac in pregnant mothers can cause infertility, recurrent miscarriages, birth defects, preterm labor and delivery, as well as many other serious conditions. Taking vitamins will likely be next to useless depending on the condition of your intestines... -
You'll find that most doctor's know very little about Celiac. At least he was open to listening, that's more than we can say about many doctors. Be forwarned that he will likely dismiss your Enterolab results because they aren't mainstream medicine. Don't let that discourage you. It sounds like you're taking great care of your grandmother and she's lucky...

ARCHIVED Does Being A Parent Not Mean Anything To Some?
Guhlia replied to blueeyedmanda's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Oh, Amanda, that's horrible! I'm glad she's getting out of there. Perhaps she'll be able to "disappear" while he's away for father's day. Thankfully she knows what she has to do and is working on it in the safest way she knows how to. -
ARCHIVED Pumpkin Cookie Recipe?
Guhlia replied to alamaz's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Here's a pumpkin whoopie pie recipe I got off of allrecipes.com. I would just make the cookie part without the filling. Or you could sub soy milk in the filling. For the all purpose flour I use 3 parts white rice, 2 parts potato starch, and 1 part tapioca starch. I added 1-1/2 teaspoons of xantham gum. -
ARCHIVED Paperless Drywall
Guhlia posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I know traditional drywall contains gluten, but what about the new DensArmor paperless drywall? Does anyone know? Has anyone called yet? -
ARCHIVED Gluten-free Fast Foods?
Guhlia replied to mama2two's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Chik-Fil-A or whatever has a gluten free menu online. Just be sure that the location you are going to has a dedicated fryer for their french fries. -
ARCHIVED Progresso Soups?
Guhlia replied to ebrbetty's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
They have many gluten free soups. I haven't bought any in about a year so my info is probably outdated, but they used to have a really awesome steak and baked potato soup. There are several w/ steak and potato, only one was gluten free. It's worth searching for. They also have a chicken/cheese/broccoli, clam chowder, vegetable beef, chicken and rice, and... -
Swimming shouldn't be a problem. You may however want to be extra careful if you're in a pool with a poolside bar, especially if they allow beverages in the pool.

Is your son gluten free also? I was just wondering because I've slowly been noticing that my daughter (not tested for Celiac, but 100% gluten free by principle) has accidents left and right after being glutened. We noticed the trend with going out to eat, but this week she started having accidents shortly after her one class where I drop her off. They gets...

ARCHIVED Fair Food
Guhlia replied to confused's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
One of those travel coffee mug things works well for alcoholic beverages. If it has an airtight seal though it likely won't work for beer or any other carbonated beverage. Green tea bottles work for beer, it's about the same color. I wouldn't trust fair food unless they have a fry stand that only sells french fries. Even then, be sure to read the ingredients... -
Just a quick FYI, my Red Robin used to put a pan of oil on for just me and do fries in that to avoid the contamination issues. Their fries are naturally gluten free as is their unused oil (contains soy). Perhaps they'd be willing to go the extra length for you??? I hope you don't get sick. That's a horrible feeling just waiting for it to all start.

ARCHIVED I Made Apple Cheese Danish!
Guhlia replied to chrissy's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Oh yum! I can't wait to try these! -
We have blue carpet in the nursery, so we're doing a floral theme. Target sells the set, it's pink, cream, and blue with vintage floral patterns on it. Very pretty and feminine.

I'd have to agree with SunnyDyRain. I worked at Perkins for a short time a few years ago and I can't imagine any of our cooks caring about food allergies. For that matter, I can't imagine any of our managers trying to get any of our cooks to care about food allergies. I'd be very careful with Perkins.

Ok, I have narrowed the list down a little after discussing some of your suggestions with my husband. It's amazing the discoveries you make when you say a certain name over and over again. I deleted a few of the options in the original post because we decided they didn't flow right or we just decided we didn't like them as much as we thought we did. Thanks...

We've pretty much settled on a first name for our baby girl that's coming, but we're unsure of which middle name to use... Our last name is Guhl, so we've had a hard time picking a name since A names, L names, and G names are out (AAG, ALG, AGG). Here's our list... Pick your favorite and let me know why. Annika Rose Guhl Annika Marie Guhl (my middle...

ARCHIVED Let's Bombard Places With Gluten Free Questions
Guhlia replied to floridanative's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Perhaps someone could start a poll on favorite restaurants pre-dx. Then, we can choose one restaurant every week and call, e-mail, mail, etc. asking for a gluten free menu. If we put them in rotation, they will feel as though they're constantly bombarded with gluten free requests. I would happily mail a letter or drop an e-mail once a week. I really miss... -

Tropicana claims that only their 100% fruit juices are gluten free. Was this one of them? If not, I'd say the juice is your likely culprit.
