ARCHIVED Anyone Know What Besan Flour Is?
momandgirls replied to mamatide's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Just went to google "besan" and this is what I found...I'd never heard of it before either... Gram flour, not to be confused with Graham flour, is a type of flour made from pulverized chickpeas. It is a staple ingredient in Indian cuisine. It is also known as chana flour, besan, chickpea flour and garbanzo flour. Gram flour contains carbohydrates and... -
ARCHIVED Breakfast Ideas
momandgirls replied to carriecraig's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Our three favorite weekday breakfasts are Erewon crispy brown rice and berries cereal, envirokids amazon flakes cereal and homemade smoothies - any kind of frozen fruit, about 1/2 cup of rice milk and a cup of any flavor soy yogurt. For weekends, we often make pancakes (with chocolate chips of course!). -
Just went to Red Robin on Sunday for the first time because of the fries. We checked with the manager (they have two dedicated fryers just for the fries) and the fries WERE on the gluten free menu. Perhaps it varies by restaurant? (we are in MA)

ARCHIVED Gene Questions?
momandgirls replied to momof2sn's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If he's healthy, I would do nothing. Upwards of 50% of this country's population carries the gene for celiac disease - many will never actually develop the disease. Just because you carry the gene for celiac does not mean that you have the disease. Gene testing can rule out a diagnosis of celiac but cannot rule one in. -
ARCHIVED Test Results For My Daughter And Me, Please Help!
momandgirls replied to a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
A full celiac panel from Quest consists of the three tests you had done. Only if those three tests are positive, do they run the other two. You could also try genetic testing. We had ours done through Prometheus and insurance did cover it (although it had to be preapproved). Remember, though, genetic testing cannot tell you whether you have Celiac - it can... -
ARCHIVED New gluten-free Baking Business
momandgirls replied to Cam's Mom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi - Where in Mass are you? It's sounds like a very celiac friendly area of the state. -
We go to Children's - they were the ones to diagnose my daughter. I like her GI and I like the program and I love Children's Hospital (my daughter sees several specialists there, not just GI) but I highly doubt you'll find one of the GIs who won't want you to do a biopsy. What I really wanted to tell you is that Children's has a great support group. I've...

ARCHIVED Breakmaker Dilemma
momandgirls replied to swittenauer's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
We have the Zojirushi and love it. Makes fantastic bread every time and it's so incredibly easy to use. I put in the ingredients (wet first, dry on top and then pour in the yeast), plug it in and push one button. Delicious bread in 3 hours and 20 minutes (and if you can't get to it right away, it stays warm for hours and is still wonderful). I got mine from... -
ARCHIVED What Are Your Favorite Gluten Free Products?
momandgirls replied to momandgirls's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi - Thank you to those who have already responded. Yes, I'm looking specifically for items that are not inherintely gluten free. Normally, I bring lots of food with us. However, I forgot pasta and I spent half a day driving around looking for a store that carried gluten free pasta. That's how this whole thing came up. They don't have a lot of space but they... -

ARCHIVED What Are Your Favorite Gluten Free Products?
momandgirls posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I've been asked to help a new england resort become more gluten free friendly and I'd like your help. They would like to carry some gluten free items in their on site (small) country store. Bear in mind that, if you're staying in this resort, you have access to a kitchen in your condo. There are a couple of natural food type stores within about a 10 minute... -

ARCHIVED 1st Trip To The Dentist
momandgirls replied to jen2be2's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
There is no gluten on latex gloves. My girls and I have all been the dentist very recently. There was nothing with gluten. Both dentists were knowledgeable and already knew that everything they use was gluten free. I don't think there's anything to be concerned about. -
ARCHIVED Has Anyone Tried This Product?
momandgirls replied to Mango04's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
According to the Bob's Red Mill representative on the phone, they have two separate facilities - one manufactures gluten free products exclusively and the other plant handles everything else they make. We've never had problems with any of their products (we've used the bread mix and the flour mix). I recently bought the gluten free cornbread mix (says on... -

ARCHIVED Vegetarian Celiac Familes?
momandgirls replied to Pacer's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My youngest is dairy and gluten free and also vegetarian. I make a lot of soups - black bean, cannelini bean, vegetable, etc. How about chili? Beans and rice? Eggplant parmagian with soy cheese? I just found a recipe for broccoli soup the other day and the girls loved it. We like the Kinnickinnick pizza crusts and use soy cheese. We make our own bread - we... -
The website and nutritional info in the restaurants do, indeed, state that the fries are gluten free and are made in dedicated fryers. On two different occasions, in two different restaurants in two different states, I still spoke to the managers who were honest enough to tell me that, despite what the website and nutritional info state, they get busy and...

ARCHIVED Lab Work
momandgirls replied to familyfirst's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you know the lab that performed the blood test (not where the blood was drawn but the lab that actually read the blood), you might be able to go the lab website and the ranges may be listed. We've had blood work done at various labs and the ranges are different. Maybe you can call the doctor and have him/her fax or send you the results? The normal ranges... -

ARCHIVED A Homemade Cookie With Rice Flour And Few Ingreds?
momandgirls replied to oceangirl's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Here's the recipe I use for meringues. I made a double batch two days ago and they're already gone! 2 egg whites 3/4 cup sugar 1 tsp vanilla 1/2 tsp salt 1 cup chocolate chips (optional - we use Tropical Source) Preheat oven to 350 degrees. With electric beater, beat egg whites until peaks form. Add in sugar slowly. Add vanilla and salt. Continue... -
ARCHIVED How Do You Start Going Gluten-free?
momandgirls replied to mairin's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
We've all been where you are. My daughter isn't much older than yours, diagnosed a year ago and I remember feeling exactly like you - totally overwhelmed even though I knew the possibility was pretty high that she'd be positive for Celiac. The best way to start is just to start. Like you, most of what I made was naturally gluten free and that was a big help... -
ARCHIVED Gluten And Dairy Free Chocolate Easter Eggs?
momandgirls replied to Team Young's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Try www.lakechamplainchocolates.com One of my daughters is gluten and dairy free and the other is dairy free. I went into the store (VT) and they were very helpful. They had a book in the store that listed every ingredient in everything they sell. She could tell me exactly which chocolates were dairy and gluten free. I bought several things for my girls...
