ARCHIVED A Little Insight From Others
Fiddle-Faddle replied to Megz's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Some of the prepared rotisserie chickens and deli meats (even deli tuna salad!!!) have wheat starch, soy sauce (most brands contain wheat), or bread crumbs hiding in them. It took me months to find out that many things that I thought were gluten-free were not (like most cereals, even Corn Flakes and Rice Krispies). The tuna salad was the big surprise... -
ARCHIVED Breads?
Fiddle-Faddle replied to MGoers37's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
All the commercially available premade breads taste like dry sponges to me. I make either the submarine sandwich bread from Annalise Roberts' cookbook (gluten-free Baking Classics--best cookbook I ever bought) or Lorka's flax bread recipe (it has its own thread on this site) which is amazing! The subway sandwich bread is almost like a good French loaf... -

Fiddle-Faddle replied to vampella's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I had a doctor actually LIE to me and tell me my tests were normal--and they were not. I'm sorry you had such a frustrating day, but at least you have a good ped, and I am glad you are fililng a complaint! -
ARCHIVED My Grandson Ethin............
Fiddle-Faddle replied to darlindeb25's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Oh, Deb, I'm so sorry to hear this. How tough--for the baby, and for you to hear about it and not be able to help. He's got 2 strikes against him already if she drinks and smokes--and not breastfeeding is a third, though it's probably better that she isn't breastfeeding if she drinks and smokes. Drinking, smoking, and bottlefeeding are all perfectly... -
ARCHIVED Mozart And The Whale
Fiddle-Faddle replied to 2kids4me's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Thank you so much--I hadn't heard of that movie. I will get it ASAP! Creative Soul, I would like to suggest that you not worry too much about a diagnosis at this point, unless you need to find a group that youfeel you "fit in" with. If there is knowledge that you can pick up from Asperger's websites that is helpful, you can--and you don't need a diagnosis... -
ARCHIVED I've Got A Rotten Cold
Fiddle-Faddle replied to BamBam's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Cough drops won't hurt you, as long as they are gluten-free and don't have any ingredients that you are sensitive to. But the best treatment is to DRINK lots of nice, hot, throat-soothing things, like chicken broth, herbal teas (licorice tea and "Throat Coat" tea are WONDERFUL for fixing that awful throat), hot ginger tea with honey, hot any kind of... -
ARCHIVED Effects Of Music
Fiddle-Faddle replied to Kassie's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I have a couple of degrees in music, and play professionally, not that that makes me any more of an expert than anyone else who loves music! The most musically knowledgeable person I ever met played only one thing--the radio! I do remember reading a study in college. Rats were the subject, and they were in cages. One cage had Mozart piped in, one had... -

Fiddle-Faddle replied to mamatide's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I've joined the club! I made the bread tonght. Thank you, Lorka, for the great recipe! I used sorghum instead of garfava, and it turned out very well. It didn't rise quite as much as I expected (either that, or it's just a much heavier loaf than I expected). Still, it was moist and delicious, and my gluten-eating DH says he likes it best of all the loaves... -

Fiddle-Faddle replied to Rachel--24's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hi, Rachel, I'm glad you found your coat--I'm sorry you had a week of not finding your brains! I've been the same way, the last few days--couldn't get my brain to work no matter what. Either my thyroid has gone kaflooie again or there's a full moon.... Hi to everybody else! -
ARCHIVED Sushi?
Fiddle-Faddle replied to Sinenox's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Just FYI--not all surimi (fake crab) has wheat starch--some brands use potato starch and corn starch instead. You have to read the labels, though. -

One group of people was--the Japanese Americans and Japanese Canadians living on the West Coast. They were taken from their homes in 1942 with only what they could carry with them, and taken to "camps"as far away as Arkansas, living in barracks that were made over from horse stalls. They were given starchy, high-gluten, American food that was poorly prepared... -

ARCHIVED Pitfalls Of Self-diagnosis
Fiddle-Faddle replied to JerryK's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Deb, I'm scratching my head here. I went back and reread all of Geoff's posts, and I don't see a single one where he degrades anyone who feels that it is a lifestyle choice. If anything, I think people were degrading him. His points were every bit as valid as yours. Could you be misunderstanding what he is saying about living in fear of buffets? As... -

Liz, would you mind very much posting your biscuit recipe? Your description is making me hungry..... -
Oh, I'm so sorry you had to experience that. She must be related tot he dermatologist I saw, who said my rash didn't LOOK like DH (he saw it a month after I'd been put on prednisone, and it was practically gone) and that my bloodwork was NORMAL (the IgG was off the charts). Since you did like her beforehand, you might try writing her a letter explaining...

ARCHIVED Pitfalls Of Self-diagnosis
Fiddle-Faddle replied to JerryK's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Can we just say that it's possible to loook at this both ways? It's possible to view this as a lifestyle choice. This attitude gives some people a feeling of control. It's equally possible to look at this and say, "Hey, there's no choice here." For some people, this is such a no-brainer that there really doesn't seem to be any choice. Personally... -
ARCHIVED When To Test Children/babies For Celiac?
Fiddle-Faddle replied to maddycat's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
It certainly couldn't hurt to be gluten-free yourself, though I'm not sure it's absolutely necessary if your baby isn't showing any possible reactions to the gluten in your breastmilk. -
ARCHIVED Very Very Concerned Parent (long)
Fiddle-Faddle replied to nogluten77's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
You've been gluten-free for 2 1/2 years longer than me, so I doubt you are making any mistakes like I did, but just in case, here are the mistakes I made for the first 2 months (til I discovered this board): The following DO contain gluten (and I didn't realize it at first): Corn Flakes Rice Krispies ALL Chex cereals corn pops cereal Quaker... -
ARCHIVED I Have To Vent!
Fiddle-Faddle replied to ptkds's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I would go to the principal about this. The teachers should NOT be handing out food to the class--that is not their job, and they could be opening themselves up to a whole lot of liability issues if one kid has an allergic reaction. As was pointed out above, the teachers should be able to do their job (teach) without resorting to junk food. Heck, you... -
