Sheouhzle is back, and phunnee!!:lol:

Patti, I forgot to comment on your yucky liver findings - - Big Poop on a Cow!!! you were SO good the evening we were together, refraining from any tippling so as not to skew your blood work the next morning.....I guess we should have had you drinking like a fish, and perhaps the readings would have pleased the doc more.... <_<;) Ah, live and learn.....!

My mom had phunny liver stuff happening about ten years ago (cannot remember all of the details), and ended up having her gall bladder removed (I now think that everything has been related to untreated celiac). It was a simple proceedure, and she felt MUCH better afterward. So it will ALL BE GOOD, whatever transpires!! :)

I want Shoozlie's bunk beds! :blink::lol:

I always think it such a waste when one has some innocuous internal thing removed, such as a gallbladder, tonsils, appendix, stones of whatever sort.....being an artist, I will always see everything as a possible piece of work.

Patti, if you have your gb removed, ask for it....you could have it incorporated into a sculpture that forever evolves, grows and changes.:lol:

The next molar I lose, I plan to start this....set it in plaster or clay. Then I'll add to it my cataracts when they come, then my shot knees when it's time to have them replaced....hysterectomy, biopsied tissue....

Taking weezee to the vet. Mygawd, I canNOT have anything happen to my weezee for a VERY VERY long time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But this is going to be a pricey trip. :( She is constnatly whining, eating grass EVERY chance she gets (without throwing up), has bloated belly, and gets PHATTER despite our constant walking.............. has elevated lipids and triglycerides......a heart murmur...... :(

Em - Big Poop on a Cow

Patteigh! My friend in San Jose had elevated liver enzymes for a full decade - - drove her insane - and she is about as puritanical and healthy as you can get (LITERALLY takes about - four aspirins a YEAR - very light drinker, VERY healthy eater, etc.)....

Well, it was JUST discovered last year that she has extremely overactive thryoid (is that Hashimoto's?) and is being treated w/ meds........and liver levels are COMPLETELY normal now!

Well, it seems you all enjoyed the summit. :)

I have been lurking for days now, but life has been quite hectic. I have just started some university classes to finish my degree, and they consume more time than I remember.

I thank you all for the daily dose of laughter you bring, and will talk to you all as often as I can. :)

Gah I'm wiped . .. .. Not much chance of any silly percolatin'. More walking today than I'd tried in a long time. (Not that it's all due to that) Teresa & Nic&Nat are in from NV, & T & I saw some SF Symphony at The Park, and walked around downtown a LOT reminiscing etc.

Ugh... I've been going over and over some stuff in my head and I have to write it out, so... rambling ahead!

Well... 1:30am here. Luke's up. This has been happening more and more frequently- He sleeps for a few hours and then wakes up sometime between 12 and 2. Every time this happens, he wakes up completely and just says he's not sleepy anymore. I have been giving him a book and letting him read until he gets sleepy again...

He's been having accidents more and more frequently, too, that I just cannot pin down on gluten... he even has them in his sleep once in awhile. Tonight he finally told me his tummy hurt, and I have a STRONG suspicion that he's been hurting on the other nights, too... why he didn't tell me, I just don't know.

He and I talked about it a little, and agreed that it's time to try going dairy-free to see if that helps.

It's still a problem of constipation! But the child eats TONS of fruit and veggies. I had him on fiber supplements for almost two months, and at first I thought they helped, but no they didn't. Even eating tons of fruit and veggies and being on fiber sups, he was still constipated. WTH!

Major graphic description ahead- skip if you have a weak stomach!!!

When I cleaned him up a little while ago, I could actually see poop right there, ready to come out. So I had him sit on the toilet, and I sat on the floor, and I worked with him, getting him to push. He was really trying, but all that would come out is gas!!! This poor kid is constantly constipated.

Gross part over.

When we talked about going dairy-free and what that meant, he was worried about it at first, but I told him I can get some special cheese and milk made out rice and soy, etc... and he was ok with it. He's a pretty mature kid. He's already taste-tested soy milk and df pizza cheese, and seemed to like both.

I guess I'll call our doc tomorrow and make him another appt to talk it over with her, too.

I have to admit, I worry about Lucas constantly. With the accidents... I HAVE to get this figured out over the summer, I HAVE to. I won't let him go back to school if he's still having accidents. He'll be in second grade this year. (Do you detect a note of panic here?)

And when the panic begins, of course, everything spirals down from there... the guilt, and feeling like a slack mom... I need to get both my boys in to the dentist... still owe our family doctor a buttload of money from my own appointments that she's let me charge... ugh!!!

I've got these sweet boys to take care of, and we were going to have a great summer- and here I am tired all the time, sleeping too late, turning green every time I turn my head too fast, muscle twitches from the shock sensations... I haven't even been able to go outside because of this stupid rash (which has FINALLY faded to shadow, but it gets inflamed at the least stupid provocation- damp, heat, etc...)

I'm having a frustrated moment, guys. So... that's what's going on. 2am now, gawd...

jerseyangel Proficient

My dear Sarah,

First of all, please never refer to yourself as a slacker mother. You are anything but :) You need to take a deep breath and try to separate out all this stuff that you're trying to handle all at once.

I think you are on the right track with Luke, poor thing. Dairy could very well be at play here, and since he's ok with cutting it out, hopefully doing so will help with his C and pain. Does he take any suppliments? Magnesium, taken at bedtime or with dinner might also help with the sleep and the C.

Gads, you're trying to juggle all this while still weaning yourself off the antidepressants--give yerself a break girl! Maybe you don't get to do everything you had planned for the boys this summer, but you know what? They have you, and that's the important thing--that's what they'll remember, that their mom was always there for them, ready to do anything for them no matter what.

Morning, All!

Hope you finally got some decent sleep, Sarah. :( I wish I had some advice, any advice, on this one. You have so much to deal with. Your doctor sounds like a gem, so it's a good thing that you are seeing her. It is easy in this big celiac world of our forum to forget that there actually ARE doctors who listen, show compassion and do all that's necessary to help us. You must keep us posted.....hope you get in to see her this week!

You guys wanna hear something incredibly stupid?

As you know, I've been on an Edna excluding most sodium, grains and sugar. All good--lost weight and all, BP went down.....but me stomach hasn't been right in weeks, I'm exhausted, and now the liver enzymes are up a little.....damn--I've even got the beginnings of those blasted hand bumps.

I was eating lots (and lots) of nuts--just almonds and walnuts as snacks, with fruit, etc. I bought the Diamond shelled walnuts in the bag--probably have gone through a half-dozen of the bags in the last month or so. Did I read the bag? Nope....I guess I thought I did, cause the almonds are ok.

I took the bag out of the fridge today and put on me reading glasses and saw the warning--made on the dreaded shared equipment as wheat.

Sillies, I am so mad at meself--how could I have been so dumb???? I've been at this for 3 freaking years!!!!!! Honest to God--I feel so idiotic. Here I'm forever telling newbies to always read the labels and warn of changing formulas, blah, blah, blah.....Gawd

Does anyone think this may have contributed to the elevated liver enzymes? One was slightly high right before I was diagnosed, and went back to normal by 6 months gluten-free.

I'm really embarassed

Oh Sarah, (((((HUGS))))). You have so much you are dealing with, with your own health issues, with your mom's health, your kids, and then all the day to day routine stuff on top of that. A slacker mom wouldn't do everything to get to the bottom of thier son's C and sleep issues. You are awesome!

Nikki brought up a good point with the linseed helping her, how is the fat in his diet? It might not be the fiber, sounds like he is getting plenty of that. It might be just a matter of getting a good source of EFAs.

Raising you vitamin D will increase absorption of calcium automatically without supplementation of calcium.  A high PTH can be caused by low D causing poor calcium absorption; not insuffient calcium intake.  With low D your body is not absorbing calcium from your food so it steals it from your bones.  Heart has priority over bone. I've been taking 10,000 IU D3 a day since 2015.  My doctor says to continue. To fix my lactose intolerance, lots of lactobacillus from yogurts, and brine fermented pickles and saurkraut and olives.  We lose much of our ability to make lactase endogenosly with maturity but a healthy colony of lactobacillus in our gut excretes lactase in exchange for room and board. The milk protein in grass fed milk does not bother me. It tastes like the milk I grew up on.  If I drink commercial milk I get heartburn at night. Some experts estimate that 90% of us do not eat Adequite Intake of choline.  Beef and eggs are the principle source. Iodine deficiency is a growing concern.  I take 600 mcg a day of Liquid Iodine.  It and NAC have accelerated my healing all over.  Virtually blind in my right eye after starting antihypertensive medication and vision is slowly coming back.  I had to cut out starches because they drove my glucose up into the 200+ range.  I replaced them with Red Bull for the glucose intake with the vitamins, minerals and Taurine needed to process through the mitochodria Krebs Cycle to create ATP.  Went from A1c 13 down to 7.9.  Work in progress. Also take B1,B2,B3,B5,B6. Liquid Iodine, Phosphatidyl Choline, Q10, Selenium, D and DHEA.     Choline supplemented as phosphatidylcholine decreases fasting and postmethionine-loading plasma homocysteine concentrations in healthy men +

@catnapt, Wheat germ has very little gluten in it.  Gluten is  the carbohydrate storage protein, what the flour is made from, the fluffy part.  Just like with beans, there's the baby plant that will germinate  ("germ"-inate) if sprouted, and the bean part is the carbohydrate storage protein.   Wheat germ is the baby plant inside a kernel of wheat, and bran is the protective covering of the kernel.   Little to no gluten there.   Large amounts of lectins are in wheat germ and can cause digestive upsets, but not enough Gluten to provoke antibody production in the small intestines. Luckily you still have time to do a proper gluten challenge (10 grams of gluten per day for a minimum of two weeks) before your next appointment when you can be retested.

Hello, @asaT, I'm curious to know whether you are taking other B vitamins like Thiamine B1 and Niacin B3.  Malabsorption in Celiac disease affects all the water soluble B vitamins and Vitamin C.  Thiamine and Niacin are required to produce energy for all the homocysteine lowering reactions provided by Folate, Cobalamine and Pyridoxine.   Weight gain with a voracious appetite is something I experienced while malnourished.  It's symptomatic of Thiamine B1 deficiency.   Conversely, some people with thiamine deficiency lose their appetite altogether, and suffer from anorexia.  At different periods on my lifelong journey, I suffered this, too.   When the body doesn't have sufficient thiamine to turn food, especially carbohydrates, into energy (for growth and repair), the body rations what little thiamine it has available, and turns the carbs into fat, and stores it mostly in the abdomen.  Consuming a high carbohydrate diet requires additional thiamine to process the carbs into energy.  Simple carbohydrates (sugar, white rice, etc.) don't contain thiamine, so the body easily depletes its stores of Thiamine processing the carbs into fat.  The digestive system communicates with the brain to keep eating in order to consume more thiamine and other nutrients it's not absorbing.   One can have a subclinical thiamine insufficiency for years.  A twenty percent increase in dietary thiamine causes an eighty percent increase in brain function, so the symptoms can wax and wane mysteriously.  Symptoms of Thiamine insufficiency include stunted growth, chronic fatigue, and Gastrointestinal Beriberi (diarrhea, abdominal pain), heart attack, Alzheimer's, stroke, and cancer.   Thiamine improves bone turnover.  Thiamine insufficiency can also affect the thyroid.  The thyroid is important in bone metabolism.  The thyroid also influences hormones, like estrogen and progesterone, and menopause.  Vitamin D, at optimal levels, can act as a hormone and can influence the thyroid, as well as being important to bone health, and regulating the immune system.  Vitamin A is important to bone health, too, and is necessary for intestinal health, as well.   I don't do dairy because I react to Casein, the protein in dairy that resembles gluten and causes a reaction the same as if I'd been exposed to gluten, including high tTg IgA.  I found adding mineral water containing calcium and other minerals helpful in increasing my calcium intake.   Malabsorption of Celiac affects all the vitamins and minerals.  I do hope you'll talk to your doctor and dietician about supplementing all eight B vitamins and the four fat soluble vitamins because they all work together interconnectedly.

Hi Jane: You may want to try the D3 I now take. I have reactions to fillers and many additives. Sports Research, it is based in the USA and I have had no bad reactions with this brand. The D3 does have coconut oil but it is non GMO, it is Gluten free, Soy free, Soybean free and Safflower oil free.  I have a cupboard full of supplements that did not agree with me -  I just keep trying and have finally settled on Sports Research. I take NAKA Women's Multi full spectrum, and have not felt sick after taking 2 capsules per day -  it is a Canadian company. I buy both from Amazon. I wish you well in your searching, I know how discouraging it all is. Florence.

highly unlikely  NOTHING and I mean NOTHING else has ever caused me these kinds of symptoms I have no problem with dates, they are a large part of my diet In fact, I eat a very high fiber, very high vegetable and bean diet and have for many years now. It's considered a whole foods plant based or plant forward diet (I do now eat some lean ground turkey but not much) I was off dairy for years but recently had to add back plain yogurt to meet calcium needs that I am not allowed to get from supplements (I have not had any problem with the yogurt)   I eat almost no processed foods. I don't eat out. almost everything I eat, I cook myself I am going to keep a food diary but to be honest, I already know that it's wheat products and also barley that are the problem, which is why I gradually stopped eating and buying them. When I was eating them, like back in early 2024, when I was in the middle of moving and ate out (always had bread or toast or rolls or a sub or pizza) I felt terrible but at that time was so busy and exhausted that I never stopped to think it was the food. Once I was in my new place, I continued to have bread from time to time and had such horrible joint pain that I was preparing for 2 total knee replacements as well as one hip! The surgery could not go forward as I was (and still am) actively losing calcium from my bones. That problem has yet to be properly diagnosed and treated   anyway over time I realized that I felt better when I stopped eating bread. Back at least 3 yrs ago I noticed that regular pasta made me sick so I switched to brown rice pasta and even though it costs a lot more, I really like it.   so gradually I just stopped buying and eating foods with gluten. I stopped getting raisin bran when I was constipated because it made me bloated and it didn't help the constipation any more (used to be a sure bet that it would in the past)   I made cookies and brownies using beans and rolled oats and dates and tahini and I LOVE them and have zero issues eating those I eat 1 or more cans of beans per day easily can eat a pound of broccoli - no problem! Brussels sprouts the same thing.   so yeh it's bread and related foods that are clearly the problem  there is zero doubt in my mind
