  1. Trader Joes and Twinnings both make a jasmine green that I love.
  2. A friend of mine went to all the trouble to do a gluten-free cake for me, there was also a regular cake for the regular folk. Luckily I physically grabbed her hand before the cake cutter went from the Gluten -full cake into the gluten-free! She couldn't believe she would do that, but it is SOOOO easy to cross contaminate when you don't have to watch...
  3. there's a local brand here in Western PA called Uncle Charlies that is gluten-free and pretty good. They have sweet, hot and VERY hot. Whole foods also says their Whole Ranch Sweet Italian Sausage is gluten-free (as are their chorizo and beef franks).
  4. I, too, lost significant weight (30 pounds in 3 weeks) when I went gluten free. I used to fluctuate 5-7 lbs a day -- but couldn't get the Drs to see this as a symptom.
  5. I drink Twinings (4-5 Earl Grey teabags a day). No problem.
  6. Whole foods has lots more gluten-free specialty items, and the bakehouse stuff is great! (it comes frozen from the bakery because the gluten-free stuff goes bad so fast). TJs has LOTS of stuff that is gluten-free if you ask at the front desk for the list. A lot of the marinated meats and sauces are gluten-free -- which is not the case for similar items...
  7. I've shopped at many different Whole Foods and they seem to handle the gluten-free bakery items differently. My current one (pittsburgh) has a rack of thawed stuff (in the middle of the glutinous bakery stuff no less), but they're happy to go in back and get me whatever I want from the freezer. I do this because the shelf life after thawing isn't very long...
  8. all of the above, but in good company!
  9. Pittsburgh is a mess! it wasn't too bad driving in yesterday, but driving home at 2 was starting to get challenging. Add to that the half inch of ice from last night and I am glad everything was canceled today! For those of you not familiar, I don't think Pittsburgh knows what arteries are... all the streets I use to commute my 11 miles (40 minutes...
  10. wheat, yes, but barley malt can readily hide in Natural flavors.... I stay away from natrual flavors except the ones I've verified or Kraft. Now if I could just remember who all was Kraft!
  11. yeah, like that "how much do you think 20ppm is: 1 TSpn, etc" I said other: "depends on the serving size!" 20ppm in a vitamin is a different animal than 20ppm in an entree.... but I'm with y'all: if I eat 3 or 4 things that are low gluten, how sick am I going to get? I learned about cumulative glutening with a medicine. Took me 2 weeks to start having...
  12. This was how I (inadvertently) did my gluten challenge !!! My wheat allergy friend did it to me!
  13. look at the utensil in question: are there sharp interior corners or creases or scratches that might hold onto little tiny crumbs? REPLACE is it a smooth (stainless steel) surface that can be reliably cleaned without any question? KEEP Wood: very questionable; glass, ceramic: usually safe. I had one muffin tin that had little grooves around...
  14. I've had no problem with Jack Daniels bourbon, but I prefer single malt scotch
  15. I get mine from the Vitamin Shoppe (comes with B6 to aid absorption) or from Whole Foods, both of which say they are gluten free. I haven't bought the Solaray brand.
  16. wierd visions of soylent green.....
  17. that's why I didn't eat in the fast food restaurants AT ALL when I lived in the DC area. trigo y pan son muy mal por me. solamente carne, por favor. but it still couldn't guarantee they got it (and I didn't!)
  18. no, it was a regular milkshake and it was a serious glutening, not a minor one. I odn't know if the icecream isn't gluten-free or if they do a lousy job of cleaning the mixer, but it's not worth it to me.
  19. This was the source of my gluten challenge! I'd been gluten-free for a few weeks, and went to a friend's house. She's got a wheat allergy, but had some spelt something. I thought it was safe. Instead I proved my gluten reaction! and how!
  20. The question when I started this diet was the annato. So white cheeses were safe. Yellow were suspect. I don't know the current status of "annato" on our hit list.
  21. my cafeteria lady said that the shredded mozzerella specifically said it contained gluten. I didn't get to read it, but on that one, I'm going to trust her.

    ARCHIVED Sandwich 101

BTW, when I was only a few weeks gluten-free, I thought I could do that -- take the meat out of the sandwiches they brought in for a meeting. I missed most of the afternoon session..... I will NOT make that mistake again.
  23. PA doesn't let TJoes sell alcohol, so they have plenty of room for gluten-free waffles! They really don't have a large gluten-free section. They have a bunch of stuff that is gluten-free (ask at the front for the list), stuff that shouldn't have gluten anyway, but everyone else processes it in, but they don't.... Picatta simmer sauce, some of the...
  24. unless you use the Queen's english, then it's "Coeliac", but they have to have extra letters in everything....
