  1. I'm American. Although we haven't been able to trace our family tree back on one side very far, we do know there is English, French, Irish, and Cherokee Indian. I come from a pretty much non-traditional family. So much so that I sometimes go out of my way to try to be different. The only real tradition that we have every year is leaving one Christmas...
  2. Sorry, no recipe but I used to buy these for my daughter: Open Original Shared Link She liked them but got burned out on them. Then I bought her these: Open Original Shared Link She got burned out on those too. She's currently eating Lara bars. At least I can get those at Target!
  3. I just found out a couple of days ago that we are not going to my parent's house for Thanksgiving. That means I'm making it here. Husband only likes the turkey legs. And he likes a lot of them so he can eat them day after day. Must find out how long he will be here for so I know how much to buy. He's in the military and only home for a week or so right...
  4. I had very few food cravings when pregnant. Never to the point where I would have to run out and buy something. But once in a while I would eat something that I bought for my husband that I wouldn't normally eat. I did have aversions though. Gluten isn't an issue for me but it is for my daughter. I do have medical problems that can leave me sick to...
  5. I too used to love to bake. I don't do much of it now at all. The gluten-free recipes I tried just didn't come out very well. There is a zucchini bread recipe on this site under the recipe section. It is pretty much the only thing I have found that always comes out well. I also have a recipe for foccaccia bread that I used to make. I used it for pizza...
  6. Excellent gravy. I found it last year just before Thanksgiving. The only problem I had with it was opening the package! I couldn't figure out how to do it. So I wrote to the company and asked. And I got a ton of coupons including some for free products! Try writing to them and praising the product. You'll probably get coupons. Anyway to open it...
  7. My daughter was allergic to soy but outgrew the allergy. When she was allergic, the oil didn't bother her. But soy flour would make her sick to her stomach.
  8. If I were you I would just ask him to go somewhere with you. Maybe to the movies or dinner. I don't really know how old you are. When I was in high school the big thing was to go out for coffee. But then I'm in the Seattle area and coffee is a big thing here. If you are too nervous to ask him to go with you alone you could invite some other friends...
  9. When my daughter was first diagnosed, I had to get her a little fridge just for her special food. She was only 6 then. And not so good at reading labels. Wore yet, her dad and my parents could not seem to figure out what she could and could not eat. Not that my parents babysat for her much. But just in case that were to happen. Well she's 13 now....
  10. *shudder* I do not see how people can eat that. I can eat a bite of raw cauliflower and so can my daughter. We don't particularly like it but we can chew it and it will go down. Not so with cooked cauliflower. We like it about as much as we like cooked broccoli which is not at all.
  11. I have not tried the Rudi's gluten-free bread because it has egg in it. But gluten is not an issue for me. I have tried the Rudi's white bread. It is nasty! It is not soft like white bread should be. It is dry and crumbly and it actually reminds me in texture of Ener-G bread that has not been put in the microwave to soften it. So even if I could eat...
  12. First off I don't know of any sugar substitutes that contain gluten. Yes there is glucose syrup that is sometimes made of wheat. But you wouldn't be using that if you are trying to cut the carbs. Do beware of sugar alcohols such as mannitol, maltitol, sorbitol, xylitol, pretty much anything ending in "ol". They can have a laxative effect. Also realize...
  13. That's terrible! Sometimes I think parents use people like you as unpaid babysitters. I see it all the time at my daughter's dance studio. They will leave kids there for hours when the kids don't have a class. Horrible!
  14. My husband always pulls the "Let's send out for pizza thing" even though everyone in my family has some sort of food issue that means we can't eat pizza very often even if it is gluten-free pizza. We can actually get gluten-free pizza delivered here but it's very expensive. And daughter and I don't like pizza all that much so we don't get it often. He...
  15. The zoo will likely have popcorn and nachos that would be safe. Maybe some nuts. Maybe some other candy. And maybe something like a snow cone. The drinks should be safe. Chuck E. Cheese has a salad bar that is most likely safe. I haven't been there for years but don't remember any wheat stuff being on it. They also have cotton candy and maybe safe...
  16. I can relate even though celiac isn't my problem. I do have food allergies though. But years ago when I was working, I was on a weight loss diet and also a vegetarian. Thankfully I didn't have to have many catered meals but I did have them a few times a year. Invariably there were donuts, muffins and bagels in the morning. Lunch was either sandwiches...
  17. I have gastroparesis due to diabetes. I do not have celiac. My gastroenterologist told me to avoid high fiber, high fat and foods that are hard to digest when my stomach is acting up. White rice is my friend. Some days I eat little more than that. I can do chicken broth as well and rice pasta. I do eat gluten-free for the most part because of my daughter...
  18. Neurontin did all kinds of bad stuff to me. I was supposed to ramp up to a high dose but wasn't able to. Made me non functional and then made me want to kill myself. Luckily there was enough of my mind left to know this wasn't rational but that was a very bad night for me. You can not just stop it either. That can cause a seizure. I had to ramp back...

    ARCHIVED What To Do

I am not celiac either nor do I have wheat issues. It is my daughter who does. But I have psoriasis. I find that taking turmeric helps.
  20. Use sweet rice flour, aka glutinous rice flour. If you have an Asian store or a large Asian food section in your store you can get it for less money there. Works like a dream! And reheating is not a problem.

    ARCHIVED Rsvp

I have found that most people just never respond. That gets frustrating. If I were you I would plan on another couple of kids maybe showing up, just in case.
  22. You might try a meatloaf with lots of vegetables in it. I can't use egg because I am allergic so I put baby food squash in there instead of egg. I use whatever veggies I have in the house such as onion, pepper, spinach, mushrooms, zucchini, carrots and celery. First I chop them finely in the food processor then I saute them until almost all of the moisture...
  23. I often eat gluten-free because my daughter has to. I feel it is easier on her if I am eating the same. Yes I will sometimes order a sandwich or have something with gravy but often it will be a hamburger patty with no bun. I do have food allergies and I am diabetic so I do have to watch what I eat. Particularly the carbs. No it won't hurt me if my food...
  24. My daughter and I eat a limited menu. My parents always have raw veggies if not also a green salad. We fill up on that stuff. Their turkey is safe. We may or may not be able to eat the mashed potatoes. But my mom usually cooks brown rice for my SIL which is safe for us. I bring boxed gluten-free gravy. I make a cranberry salad and whatever else my...
