ARCHIVED Red Pinprick Dots
kabowman replied to Lister's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I get those too - sometimes I can atribute it to something that came into contact with my skin, other times, it is burst capilaries (sp???) from throwing up. They just seem to show up occasionally, can last for days or hours, or longer (rosacea for years but bumps gone now - just red) then they (except for the rosacea) go away. -
Loss of taste and smell can be a side effect of some meds - my mom stopped some of hers because it was so annoying.

ARCHIVED Vegetable Chips
kabowman replied to megsylvan2's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
This is what I do with potatoes too - I haven't found a comercial chip that didn't make me sick any more...works great and you can do any flavors you like. As soon as summer is here, we will be doing veggies too. -
I found the vanilla flavor (which I can't have any more) rice milk is a little sweeter than plain rice milk. Either way, nobody in my house (or neighbor kids) seems to notice a difference. Even in plain mashed potatoes made with hazlenut milk that I think is very sweet. Anyway, I cook only with those for anything I might eat and nobody complains.

My docs suggested an elimination diet - I tested negative (which is about 30-50% accurate for true food allergies anyway) to most of the foods, and a food diary. I went to plain meat and veggies until I felt better which only took a week or less for me then I started adding food back in - with the diary and comments about symptoms, you can really start to...

ARCHIVED Diabetes (grrrrrr) Do You Also Have It?
kabowman replied to ravenwoodglass's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I was dx with pre-diabetes (120 and diabetes starts at 125) about 1 1/2 years ago. I have given up all sugar except for carbs which I limit and the occasional cookie treats I buy for myself which I eat in moderation. I did this because I noticed when I had too many carbs or ANY sugar, my body reacted, a lot - a moderate dose of sugar foods would actually... -
ARCHIVED Trouble With Soy Anyone?
kabowman replied to wonkabar's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
There is rice and nut milks too. Once a person adjusts to the taste, they are fine. I love my hazlenut milk. If you are just limiting lactose - what about lactaid milk? Is there a gluten issue with that, if not, go that route - it still has casien. My son didn't even notice much of a difference between that and regular milk and now that is all he has... -
ARCHIVED Any "home-canners" Out There?
kabowman replied to jenvan's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I added a small flower bed last weekend and this weeknd added another raised garden bed and fixed the flower bed along the south side of the house. Hubby pulled and replanted 2 of the six bushes I hate that are in front of the house so now I am fixing up the right side of the house...4 more bushes to pull on the left (cut down 4 along the north side last... -
Could it be a yeast thing? I had to give up fruit - they have yeast. Also included in that list is yeast, of course, baked sweet things can occasionally if left out too long, tomatoes have a similar yeast in them (I can eat them in limited amounts), vinegar, jams and jellies, most alcohol including wine... I agree with tarnalberry - a hard core elimiation...

ARCHIVED Elimination Diet
kabowman replied to a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Also, keep a food diary of everything you eat, while doing the elimation diet including sauces, spices, mixes, drinks, gum, etc. and make sure you have a space to write symptoms, even if they don't seem related somewhere on the sheet. I tracked fevers, swollen glands, aching joints, along with the expected digestive issues. I prefer a sheet that... -
ARCHIVED Ignorant Server Of The Day
kabowman replied to floridanative's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
My Chili's servers suggest you tell them what you want ON your salad, not what you want left OFF - however, every time I go in, I tell them what I want left OFF and they ask, so you just want...? -
The CS took a minute for me too but other than that, sounds like a quote that I will/can use when something bad happens! Glad you got drugs to fix you problems so back to work will get more normal!!!

ARCHIVED Then Last Item With Gluten You Ate...
kabowman replied to VegasCeliacBuckeye's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I had forgotten - after the fair and the elephant ear, I went home and had a couple of cold beers to wash it down with - if I was going out, I was going out in STYLE!!! I haven't touched anything with gluten intentionally since! -
Go to the doc. It could be bad, depending on what it is - Don't mess around with your eyes!!!! Pink eye is loads of fun. You need drops from the doc for that too.

ARCHIVED Oeliac Disease And Lactose Intollerant
kabowman replied to joalabbs's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I have a 12YO son that is lactose intolerant but not gluten-free. He eats sorbets (you would have to check for ones that are gluten-free) for desert. That seems to have eased the "pain" of giving up a food he ate at every meal plus all the stuff in between. Hoping we don't have to go gluten-free yet too but I think that is coming... And, like most of us... -
ARCHIVED Tried Millet For 1st Time Last Night
kabowman replied to jenvan's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
OK, this is really weird. I just bought some last week but haven't tried it yet...maybe this weekend when I am not too busy and won't have sick kids around! -
My cheeks and nose just started out a red, then the bumps developed, then the v-veins, then my chin went red, then it went to my chest and neck, then the bumps started there. Of course, mine started about 7 or so years ago that I know of - it may have started sooner if I knew what to look for - it was, oh, my face is red all the time. I just look like...

ARCHIVED Ibs And Celiac
kabowman replied to Nic's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I have IBS - meaning, I have problems but they can't really figure out why. My oldest son has IBS--ditto and he tested negative for celiac disease. He also has to avoid nitrates and cinnamon. My step-daughter had IBS (the mom didn't believe it so when they went back, the doc told her it was nervous stomach, not IBS - well same thing) but eats so much... -
My GI tested for parasites, among other things, and nothing for me.

I was so excited when I realized about 6 months ago that I can have meatloaf! Meatloaf, who would have thought I would be so excited but I was and still am. I actually made one last week and with just 4 of us home, not 5, it was gone. We actually had a half of a half of an end left that I saved for my next afternoon snack - a little pathetic but hey....

ARCHIVED Have Symptoms But Tested Negative?
kabowman replied to Guinevere's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My GI told me that gluten-free for 3 months could show no damage (depending on how bad it was to start with I guess). Either way, no gluten for me (among other things). gluten-free is the only lifestyle for me!!! I also wonder about my youngest son - it takes him a full week to recover from any stomach issues and he is lactose intolerant but not tested... -

kabowman replied to irish's topic in Publications & Publicity

ARCHIVED Celiac
kabowman replied to Terrilyn's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
One more thing to think of - teflon pans need to be exclusively gluten free. We only share the stainless steel pot and cookie sheets - everything else is divided either gluten-free or not. My mixing bowls we share too... I keep my own shelf in the 'fridge for all my foods and my condiments. Also, we just moved and the new house has two pantries so I have...
