  1. I would also recommend thyroid testing--when I read your post, that was the first thing to come to mind. Hashimoto's Thyroiditis is very common in people with celiac....and one of its principal features is fatigue and sleepiness.
  2. My mother and I (both celiacs) used to get them all the time. I was even on prophylactic antibiotics for years just to keep from getting them. However, after reading every study that had come out on how to avoid getting UTIs and trying every remedy on the face of the planet, I hit on the reason for mine. The study I read was very simple--it said that the...
  3. 1. Never, ever, ever eat at a potluck!! 2. I repeat: Never eat at a potluck!!!!!
  4. L-Glutamine is an amino acid, and it is oftentimes recommended for people who are trying to recover from celiac symptoms. Many people on this Forum have used it (according to postings that I've read). And, yes, it can be found simply over the counter at health food stores or any place that sells supplements. As for what you've been ingesting, I'd definitely...
  5. I think the "official" literature on DH needs to be scrapped! My DH has always primarily been on my face, and even when I was diagnosed with celiac and later read about DH, I didn't at first recognize that that was what I had because all the medical literature I read said that it didn't occur on the face. Also, for me, it's not entirely symmetrical. Besides...
  6. I'm sure that you'll receive many replies to help you with any possible cross-contamination, but please consider that it might just be too soon for you to feel 100%. It took me 18 months before I consistently had solid stools. However, what helped me get better was taking L-glutamine, which healed my gut.
  7. I'm also hampered by a very tight budget, so I know where you're coming from. For most of the month, I eat soups made of vegetables, beans, chicken, etc., or stir-fries using cheap, gluten-free rice noodles from Thai Kitchen (I add veggies and gluten-free soy sauce). However, during the last week of each month, I usually end up eating eggs, potatoes, apples...
  8. Yes, it's a simple blood test. Good luck! Laura
  9. Thyroid symptoms can be really strange. I get exactly the same symptoms whether I'm hyper- or hypothyroid, so I've always had to get tests to determine what was actually going on. Because I have Hashimoto's, it took about two years for the up-and-down thyroid situation to clear up. However, you are very brave to tolerate such horrible symptoms (been there...
  10. What I have found is that when I'm asked why I'm not eating and I mention celiac and my inability to eat gluten, people around me become extremely interested. The questions go on and on, and more people tend to gather around to listen. I've come to believe that so many people have digestive and nutritional issues, they are searching for the cause...and...
  11. Why is your doctor waiting to treat you? I'm sorry....but your health is very important, and being hyperthyroid is very serious. If it means weaning your daughter immediately, I think you should consider doing so. PLEASE, get the medical help you need NOW! I can't believe your doctor is waiting--this can very quickly become a very serious situation.
  12. Two things: 1) Has your thyroid been tested? Before I found out I had Hashimoto's Thyroiditis (which, as you know, is common in people with celiac), I was so fatigued, I could barely function; and 2) Whenever my Vitamin D is low, I get more benefit from walking outside in the sun than from supplements. I still take a supplement, but I don't tend to absorb...
  13. Oh, yeah, I was hungry all the time...because I craved everything I loved and could no longer eat--LOL! Other than that, I don't think I had to deal with hunger issues. I just basked in how much better I felt...
  14. As for the amount of gluten they quoted to you, they are referring to the amount in the one ingredient, which is then probably diluted (a small amount add to a large amount of other ingredients); hence, the apparent "questionable" figure.
  15. You Aussies are soooooo lucky!!! The experience of living gluten free is so much easier there. When I visited my daughter last September, she drive me to Hunter Valley for some winetasting, and I was worried about where we would be able to eat. It turns out that I had nothing to fear--we found restaurants that offered the option of having my sandwich made...
  16. What brand of Vitamin D/K2 are you taking? I'd like to check it out. I've been using a Vitamin K transdermal creme for the past seven years to keep my levels up. Recently, I asked my doctor to check my K levels, and she said that that test isn't normally done. When I needed surgery four years ago, I recall that I had to be referred to a doctor of hemotology...
  17. Yes, it's disheartening that so many vegetables are high in iodine. There is a reason for that, but it would take me a while to explain it. Earlier you asked an interesting question: Would eating sweet potatoes cause a problem? You raise an important point, since I recently read that a study has shown that Vitamin A is inflammatory to people with celiac...
  18. Unfortunately, going in the summer won't happen for me--the flights are too expensive then, and my daughter's place doesn't have air conditioning. She lives in a place four blocks from Bondi Beach (it's kind of like a large dorm with five rooms that are rented out to young people). Last year, I went in early September, and the weather was fantastic. However...
  19. Oh, you're in Australia!! My daughter lives in Sydney....and I love OZ! I'm saving up my money to return there in March. As for whether or not it's available there, I don't know. The company is somewhere in the San Francisco Bay Area, and that's where I live. If a doctor there is willing to prescribe it, let's work out a way to get it to Oz, okay?...
  20. I just read another thread that you started, and it seems that you're feeling quite ill at this time. There is a product that might help you tremendously that includes L-Glutamine (500 mg). It comes in powder form (I add mine to a smoothie) and may need a doctor's prescription. I'm not sure about that, though, because I think I saw it listed online. I...
  21. I can highly recommend L-Glutamine. I've taken it myself with great results, and it's often mentioned at celiac conferences as being helpful with healing the gut.
  22. I don't think there have been very many--if any--studies on how celiac affects the tendons, ligaments, and muscles. However, I know that a LOT of people with celiac have problems with these body parts. I had to have physical therapy in my early 20's for both my knees and hips. Have you seen a doctor about a referral to a physical therapist? If you don...
  23. I don't know if I can help, but I'm going to try. First, many of us have trouble absorbing hormones, so you might have difficulty absorbing testosterone--this is something to discuss with your doctor. Also, it seems that you may have Dermatitis Herpetiformis, which is an auto-immune disease associated with celiac. It causes an itchy, blistery, acne-like...
  24. As for a "doctor's note," when needed, I have used my son's blood tests. People don't know that an endoscopy is considered the "gold standard." You have the positive blood tests; therefore, you have your proof for the need to take gluten-free food with you when flying on an airline. I don't know if schools need more verification than that.
  25. Yes, I've had a similar experience...and it can feel pretty demoralizing. I actually started to cry (hate to admit that!). I was just so humiliated and hurt! It happened at a Chevy's Mexican Restaurant, and when I asked the server what I could eat, he consulted with the manager. When he returned, he told me the manager had instructed him to advise me...
