ARCHIVED Help With Understanding Labs
Skylark replied to ocdsgirl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Your son has markers of autoimmunity, probably at least partly from his arthritis. Anti-tTG is an autoimmune antibody. It's a major celiac marker, but it can also show up in people with arthritis who are not celiac. ANA (anti nuclear antibodies) is another marker of autoimmunity that could be from the arthritis. It could also be nothing because 5% of the... -
ARCHIVED Genetic Test Results
Skylark replied to mkmom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You need to try getting off gluten! If I were you I would just try the diet rather than spending a bunch of money for more tests. Use the money for fresh cutting boards, a new toaster, some cookbooks, and some gluten-free bread! There is not a test available right now (Enterolab included) that is good at identifying people who simply feel better off gluten... -
ARCHIVED Enterolab Test Results
Skylark replied to kkline's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I forgot about your DQ9! I wonder what the mechanism of DQ9 celiac is. The structural biology studies that are so compelling are on DQ2, and DQ8 is structurally similar enough that the pathway to celiac is fairly clear. Hmmm... There is some real science I could possibly do there... You've just inspired me to do a little research. -
You might have read my SSRI/bipolar horror story in bits and pieces in other posts. As a person who "fell through the cracks" I'm absolutely thrilled to see you doing this. I hope it makes a difference.

ARCHIVED What Other Food Allergies Do You Have?

With the stomachaches, gas and bloating, fructose malaborption is a really good thing to look into. -
ARCHIVED Enterolab Test Results
Skylark replied to kkline's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes, you should ask for standard celiac bloodwork from your doctor if your insurance covers it before going off gluten. Enterolab is not a substitute for a proper celiac panel. You need to be sure you don't have anti-endomysial antibodies, or anti-tTG antibodies in your blood, which would indicate a clear need to go off gluten permanently. Your serotype... -
ARCHIVED This Is Gluten Free Right?
Skylark replied to Luvbeingamommy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I don't see any gluten ingredients either. Hopefully you'll get at least one more pair of eyes. The list is a little scarier than the Breyer's I usually eat though. -
ARCHIVED Gluten-Free Newbie ... Need Assistance
Skylark replied to BlessedChef's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I agree with Takala DPP-IV fad is a dangerous piece of psuedoscience. Alvine Pharmaceuticals is testing an enzyme-based drug, but DPP-IV is not one of the enzymes, and the drug is too early in clinical trials to get an idea of whether it will work. You need to get tested, then find a substitute for your breakfast bagels. The Glutino ones are pretty... -
ARCHIVED I Can't Seem To Make Myself Do It.....
Skylark replied to BriLee's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I know it's hard to stick to the diet but you're playing with fire. Celiac disease can progress and the longer you eat gluten, the worse the autoimmunity gets. You can develop worse stomach problems, neuropathy from autoimmunity and vitamin deficiencies, autoimmune thyroid disease, anemia, and osteoporosis later in life from calcium deficiency. Google... -
ARCHIVED Need Diet Soda, No Aspartame
Skylark replied to MyMississippi's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Can you please substantiate your assertion that the small amount of Splenda in a can of soda is "dangerous"? -
ARCHIVED Still Have Active Coeliac Disease
Skylark replied to Mack the Knife's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Have you tried going off all cow's milk and casein? Some celiacs respond to casein in a very similar manner to gluten. Open Original Shared Link -
I am NOT a picky eater but some of the gluten-free stuff is just nasty. Cardboard flavored or overly sweet bread, cookies with a weird, sandy texture, or muffins that are sticky from being frozen and thawed too many times are some of the things I've run across. There is very little from Kinnikinck, Ener-G or Food4Life that I will buy. Amy's brand is hit...

ARCHIVED The Power Of Cross Contamination
Skylark replied to elle's mom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Some celiacs react to casein as if it were gluten. Are you sure keeping milk in her diet is OK? -
You know, antibiotics are not lectins but they're nasty things. I wonder how much makes it into the meat.

My father has a mold allergy, and he is sensitive to black pepper because of how it is made. Could this be your issue?

ARCHIVED Emotional Problems Whole Life
Skylark replied to dudeitseddy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm so glad my story might help someone else. I'd shout from the mountaintops if I could save even one other person from the nightmare I went through. I don't think you'll get the same effects from typical multivitamins. EMPowerPlus is an amino acid chelate. The amino acids used to chelate EMPowerPlus are ones the nervous system uses, so the supplement... -
ARCHIVED Accidental Contamination And Treatment
Skylark replied to naiiad's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
There's not much escape from a glutening for me. I treat symptoms. Immodium for diarrhea, Pepto-Bismol if my stomach keeps hurting, Tylenol for a headache. Sometimes I have to eat rice and gluten-free broth for a day or two to help settle my stomach again. If the anxiety is bad I add a few grams of inositol to a water bottle and sip it. -
Grocery store meat is risky, but may have nothing to do with gluten! There are nasty bacteria floating around the big slaughterhouses these days. I don't know about everyone else, but I get the same stomach trouble from mild food poisoning as from gluten exposure. I handle grocery store meats carefully, wash everything that touches them with soap and the...

ARCHIVED Casein Intolerant Or Gluten Intolerant
Skylark replied to amu's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
IgG blood tests are notoriously inaccurate for food allergies. Allergists use them as a guideline for what foods to try with an elimination diet. An IgG reaction does not necessarily mean you can't tolerate a food. Also, unless you are IgA deficient it's not even the right test for gluten intolerance. Gluten sensitivity is IgA mediated. That's why you... -
ARCHIVED Emotional Problems Whole Life
Skylark replied to dudeitseddy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I was under psychiatric care for fifteen years, first on Prozac, then Prozac and lithium when I started having manic episodes, finally lithium and Depakote. I was diagnosed as bipolar I. I still had breakthrough episodes of mania and depression, with horrible insomnia. At one point I went ten days with almost no sleep, and my doctor was considering hospitalization... -
ARCHIVED How Long To Try Gluten-Free Diet?
Skylark replied to MommyL's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Try it for a couple months. The "IBS" will clear up faster than that if your problem is gluten intolerance. The anxiety, depression, and psoriasis could start to get better too, although for me the psych issues took almost a year. -
ARCHIVED Well, That Was Miserable
Skylark replied to MagpieWrites's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm so scared to travel because of stories like this. It sounds absolutely miserable. I would call and write Royal Caribbean for a refund. Your husband's company may have bought the tickets, but you are paying through the paycheck deduction. Fighting for your money back will make the point you are trying to make. -
ARCHIVED Interstitial Cystitis And Tourettes

My brother has tics. He finds they get worse when he eats refined sugar or caffeine. -
Listen to your body, not the doctors! There are forms of gluten intolerance that don't show up very well on celiac tests but you still feel miserable when you eat wheat. There are even milder cases of celiac where the blood tests are fine, but when they do an intestinal biopsy there are some abnormalities.

ARCHIVED Histamine Intolerance In Celiac Sufferers
Skylark replied to Marz's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Both my dad and I don't tolerate red wine very well. Histamine and sulfites is a nasty mix for folks with allergies and asthma!
