ARCHIVED Anyone Find Out Something Else Was Wrong, Too?
Marilyn R replied to glutenfreeinminnesota's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It really does take time. And there will be hurdles like new food intolerances. Not everyone will agree, but it may pay to visit am allergist for food allergies. (Skin prick testing.) I was totally shocked to learn that I had a 4 on a scale of 1-5 on turkey, clams, pecans (ingredient in a gluten-free/SF/DF bar I was eating regularly) and egg yolk. I... -
ARCHIVED Hives -- Could It Be From Wine?
Marilyn R replied to Marie1976's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I break out in hives from most OTC cold or allergy medications, and have for years. I used to love wine and have a rack of it in my galley kitchen. I haven't been able to tolerate wine since shortly after I went gluten-free 1 1/2 years ago. (So now I dust it, vs. drinking it.) I'm almost ready to give wine another whirl. My gut is tolerating things... -
Love your amarylis pic, very pretty! And I've been called "bubble girl" by my dear companion. You aren't crazy, hang in there and btw I'd love to see your new thread. (I bought a Ninja & love it, but it doesn't do veggies like I thought it would.) Thanks for your advice about the adjunct nut grinder.

Count me in on the getting really sick from soy. And dairy. I'm able to tolerate dairy now, but I understand from other posts that dairy can be a fleeting thing (good today, bad tomorrow.) I've been tested for a slew of other things by a number of specialists. There are times when my blood work shows up positive for other diseases. (Not cancer... -
Oh, I was pissed. They have NO concept of germ theory nor cross contamination, no matter what their education level nor being told repeatedly what not to do. None whatsoever. Now I am ROFLOL and happy to know I'm not the only one who lives with Dennis the Menace. To the OP, I'm sorry about your nut grinder. Will you buy another one? I can see...

ARCHIVED Casein. What Are Your Symptoms?
Marilyn R replied to GFreeMO's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Yes. (It hurt's me to say this because I just added back dairy a few weeks ago.) Other than nasal drip I haven't had any repercussions. I guess I'll enjoy my honeymoon. I always new it wasn't about lactaid. -
ARCHIVED Too Many Things Asociated With Celiac Disease
Marilyn R replied to allergyprone's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
"I have my doubts that it is stress related because I tend to react differently to stress (trouble sitting still and lack of focus) but I'm keeping my mind open to anything, I have been looking into type 1 diabetes because my grandmother on my dad side had it and so do all of her sibblings and the last time I was tested was before I had celiacs and prior... -
ARCHIVED Lab Results-Confused
Marilyn R replied to violentlyserene's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I'm not a dr. or expert, but it sounds like the radiologist is saying that you have severe damage to you villi. He only found a few blunt villi on the specimens your GI took. The radiologist diagnosed you with celiac disease (not mild), and peptic ulcer disease, which will undoubtedly improve with a totally gluten-free diet. Thanks for posting, I'm going... -

Hi Nicole, and welcome to the forum! An Allergist can run a "Hive Panel" on you and do skin prick testing for other food allergies. I had the food skin prick testing but not the hive panel because I know what makes me break out in hives. (For me, it's OTC cold medications and decongestants, most antihistimines. I seem to be able to tolerate Zyrtec... -
I make my own coffee and chocolate syrup by scratch for less than it costs for a "straight" coffee at Starbucks, and make some delicious drinks in my blender. Sometimes it's about being social though.

ARCHIVED Creamy Dressing?
Marilyn R replied to Hungrylady's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Easy and pure: squeeze a lime (or lemon, but limes are seedless and easier to deal with) into a bowl. Add twice as much oil of your choice (olive, canola, avacado, walnut all work well) Add 1 - 1 1/2 T. grainy pure mustard & s&p to taste. Whisk for 2-3 minutes with a wire wisk. This goes great over mixed greens (or simply chopped romaine... -
ARCHIVED Do You Ever Eat Out Or Eat At Home The Best You Can?
Marilyn R replied to mommyto2kids's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
We have a few options for restaurants reasonably close to us, but they're all chain restaurants and service/results can be spotty based on how well trained the kitchen and service staff is. I react fairly severely, so for me it isn't worth the risk, but I may be older and cranky! (I've ordered off the gluten-free menu and had bread delivered with my meal... -
ARCHIVED Symptoms Without Delayed Growth In Child
Marilyn R replied to nicolebeth's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Has your ped ever run a celiac panel on her? I'm in my 50's and believe I've had celiac disease since I was in my puberty, and I'm 6'0 tall, so never had any question of delayed growth. I had early telltale signs like very late menstration (started at 16, but only after being put on birth control pills), very heavy periods, hematomas, miscarriages and... -
I think stress effects our autoimmune system not in the same way that gluten does, but in a fairly powerful way, not just in our sleep but in our normal activities of daily living.

The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat
Marilyn R replied to jess-gf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I can honestly say it was the best lunch I've had in a very long time, and want to thank you for suggesting it. With respect to the chocolate, I have to show respect and restraint to soy. So I had one Hershey's Dark Chocolate with Almonds Nugget. Before I knew better, though, I could have made my way through that bag in a night or two. I could polish... -

We had grilled garlic shrimp and twice baked potatoes for him, (I had my twice baked potato for lunch with Lovetotravel's reccomendation of tuna, and it was great! ) So I had sweet potato tonight. And a fresh sliced peach and a square of dark chocolate. -
Corn is a biggy, I get ticked off at the grocery when I'm staring at those labels and see high fructose corn syrup and corn starch. It's even more of a pia when you look at ingredients for health & beauty products. Arrggh! Glad your store is busy, let us know how your challenge goes, wish you well...

Ok. I appreciate your posts (always) and slso appreciate the logical, succinct answer to my question. I understand now.

Just an FYI, I had a horrible reaction to quinoa shortly after going gluten-free. Haven't been willing to subject myself to it since then, and there's a very good chance I never will try it again. I say don't go if you aren't comfortable with it. I remember that we share some of the same neuro and psych issues from being glutened, don't know if quinoa...

ARCHIVED Do You Ever Eat Out Or Eat At Home The Best You Can?
Marilyn R replied to mommyto2kids's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I tried the gluten-free menu at a chain restaurant shortly after going gluten-free and got sick as as dog for a several days, and my lunch cost $15 even though I drank water and didn't have a dessert. That really upset me, and I vowed not to go out again. Conversely, I had a family emergency and went to a very small town. I ordered safe foods like uncut... -
Thanks, Mushroom, you are a well respected member on the forum. Do you still recommend she challenge gluten before the other avoided foods? I'm just curious.

I'm glad for the encouragement about cheese. You know how much I love it! My husband and I will be in Italy six weeks from right now so I will miss gluten AND cheese. Cheese is one of the things I had for snacks on our last trip in May. But I am going to try it again November - hopefully I will be able to at least tolerate the hard cheeses...we will see...

ARCHIVED Testing After Family Member Is Found Positive
Marilyn R replied to Sam'sMom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I think my blood pressure actually increased when I read your post. Even if your husband is asymptomatic, he could be the carrier, and he could have celiac disease. The research you've done is true. The doctor is probably pressured by the insurance company to keep diagnostic testing costs low, but even then being a first degree relative of somebody... -
You mentioned that you had to give up dairy right around the time you mentioned the nightmre. I'm not a professional, but I would guess your psyche is batting with the concept of giving up cheese. (I'm far from a pro, but worked as a secretary for the psych dept. at a college 30 something years ago lol.) The good news is you can reintroduce cheese in a...
