  1. For about two weeks I've been having some pretty serious pain. Partly it's the all over flu-like ache I'm used to now, only worse. Partly it's been other, localized and very severe pain. It started in my left shoulder and was worse with any type of movement, with unexplained periods where it would simply go from really bad to a sharp stabbing pain so bad...
  2. The only way I'd ever feel comfortable eating food someone else made is if that person actually understands exactly how bad and dangerous it can be for me to have gluten. I did have a muffin at a church breakfast. I felt safe because while she has no specific problem with gluten the women has so many food allergies that she takes the idea of cross contamination...
  3. I do taxes, but am by no means an expert so certainly ask your "person" instead of taking my word, as things are subject to change and I am subject to being wrong. Included in that 7.5% is all medical expenses including the cost of medical insurance if it is not already a pre-tax deduction. (For instance I pay for my dental insurance out of my bank account...
  4. Tums are okay, but not the smoothie flavored ones. They're my go to staple.
  5. Growing up I always had a new dress for Easter. I was actually thinking about that today when I was out of the house and almost went to the store for a new dress I don't really need. My mom always had Easter baskets for my brother and me that we both got into before church. Not sure why but we also always got a present, one year it was gameboys. My parents...
  6. I... I whined all day yesterday about our dusting of April snow and the flurries and snow squalls all day. It was right around 35ish or 40 and I bundled up in my winter coat and gloves and scarf and still was convinced I'd freeze to death on my 15 minute drive. I don't know how you tolerate it, although mac and cheese is awesome for warming the soul. I think...
  7. I love Zevia! Yes, soda is bad for me. No, frankly I don't care. I don't (and won't) drink soda with calories, not only does it make me sick but I'm fat enough to know better. My husband won't go near Zevia, he says it tastes funny and it does take a bit of getting used to but I rather enjoy it. I buy mine at the health food store since they seem to be the...
  8. As far as I know there isn't any particular brand that has exclusively gluten free medications. Even within a certain group such as ibuprofen you'll find that one pill may be gluten free and another isn't even though they're the same brand. Sadly you need to check every single medication you pick up. I'm a fan of Walgreens due to the list they keep posted...
  9. More dental work means another 2-3 days eating soft foods and liquids. I minced up some bacon and fried it up and cooked it in some cream of rice cereal and added a little maple syrup on top. It sounds weird but it really is yummy.
  10. Had friends over Monday night for my first dinner party since going gluten free. Other than some frozen rolls everything was gluten free, even our brownie sundaes for dessert and they didn't even know! I used up my leftover lamb today to make a shepherd pie that I know my husband won't touch which is fine by me. I'm tempted to say I added too much gravy to...
  11. I love my brown rice pasta and haven't liked anything else I've tried so I just quit trying other kinds. I usually keep my pasta and sauce separate unless I'm packing something for a work lunch. When I do that I just add a little extra sauce so it doesn't seem dry when I get around to eating it. I like the flavor a bit better after it soaks up the extra sauce...
  12. I got sick from a cutting board that had gone through dishwasher after being set on top of my husband's pizza stone. What you need separate and gluten free really depends on what it is. I wouldn't go anywhere near a non-stick pan anyone else uses because without fail they seem to always be scratched up, if they aren't scratched I'd think they'd be safe. I...
  13. Very tart, I added a wee bit of organic sugar and it's just perfect. I also picked up a bunch of blackberries extremely cheap so those will go in tomorrow with more apples. I'm very happy with the results. Thanks for the tips on the papayas, maybe I'll pick one up sometime.
  14. I know how to pick out a ripe mango, and I found some easily at the store. It wasn't until I got there I realized I have no clue how to pick a ripe papaya so I just passed on that. I've got my witch's brew brewing in the kitchen and it smells heavenly.
  15. I suppose it's my gamer side but this is my first thought whenever I read a post like this, or most of the time when I talk to "educated" people who obviously know more than me based on the fact that they have letters after their name. No other words can adequately describe how positively ignorant people can be.
  16. I do use the Wal-Mart brand olive oil, although I simply buy the pure since I use it in a lot of cooking and don't want to burn it quite so easily. I haven't seemed to have any reaction from it at all. Is it possible that you are having a reaction to something that isn't gluten? It isn't at all unlikely for you to discover a new intolerance that could be...
  17. I used a lot of the processed foods as I transitioned to gluten free since having what was "normal" for me helped me to cope. The longer I'm gluten free the more of those I cut out of my diet. I find that I feel a whole lot better eating meat, fruits and veggies. I keep my processed foods to a minimum, pasta which I would have a terrible time giving up and...
  18. Lucky for me I decided to have some sausage for supper, I headed out to the deep freeze to discover someone had unplugged it. I got there just in time, things were defrosted but still in the safe temperature range. So, I made BBQ chicken, bratwurst, chicken apple sausage, chicken pineapple sausage and a corned beef roast. Roughly enough to feed a small army...
  19. That sounds so yummy! I was going to make a rare Friday trip to the store tomorrow so I think I'll pick up some apples and papaya, I can't wait to try it. I'll bet it's just as good with mango which I have a torrid love affair with.
  20. It was about 2 months before I started feeling noticeably better, and it was barely noticeable. It takes time to heal. I still frequently find myself with barely the energy to get out of bed let alone cook something. Things that get me through are being able to throw a chicken breast or steak on my George Foreman grill and a bag of steam-able veggies in the...
  21. If you're looking for salt with amazing flavor I'd recommend Real Salt. (Yup, that's what it's called.) It's mined in Utah and is so absolutely amazing I'll never go near "table" salt again. It is my understanding (although you should check yourself) that the salt is packaged locally and there is no risk of cc. Since I live mere miles from the mine though...
  22. You aren't alone in being tortured. My oldest daughter (17) went gluten free after my diagnosis and is feeling much better. Sadly, her 15 year old sister is a brat. (They don't live with me so I have little to no control over their daily behavior.) The youngest has spent 2 months picking on her older sister. I finally got through to her when she was whining...
  23. I remember checking at Smith's and seem to think they were gluten free although I didn't buy one at the time. They're cheaper at Costco so I just go there.
  24. I have noticed my periods have been closer together since going gluten free, which is not thrilling me at all. I went from every 27-29 days to every 21-25 days. So far that is the only change. My doctor said that caffeine will intensify pain, and after testing that over several months noticed that I do in fact feel much worse when I drink caffeine during...
  25. Had some dental work done that's going to keep me on a liquid diet for a day or two. I have some boxed soup or another in my pantry but was feeling good enough (ty painkillers) to make creamy carrot soup which is absolutely divine. It doesn't look appealing, sort of looks like a bowl full of orange vomit but it's so very good. I think I may make more tomorrow...
