  1. I missed the strep test mention there... when I was a kid I tested positive for strep every day of my childhood; if they tested it, it was positive and they had me on antibiotics for a full year... and then I still tested positive. I mention it as a warning that if she doesn't have strep symptoms (which I usually didn't) then she might not need antibiotics...
  2. I'm afraid that I had the opposite problem and held onto weight and swelling before my diagnosis but after I changed my diet, I lost wieght because (I think) much of it was swelling and inflammation. I lost weight around my face, but it was a bit puffy before and it is a healthier look now. What did pop into my mind was a purely cosmetic treatment. I had...
  3. It sounds like it could be ceiliac or non-celiac gluten intolerance (NCGI), you can't know which unless testing is done but to do the blood testing you need to have been eating gluten for weeks; it's possible a endoscopic biopsy might be an option for you still if you can get in immediately for the procedure otherwise you would need to consume gluten for...
  4. Everyone is giving you sound advice... and I agree that the doctor sounds unusually defensive and unlikely to bend... never know though. Tell your doctor that I started feeling better as soon as I stopped eating gluten. Much less pain. And my 5yo son, who appears to have non-celiac gluten intolerance (he tested negative), would have the runs DURING...
  5. Yikes, you've had a tough go of it. That's great that you've found the root cause of it and I hope the gluten-free diet goes a long way towards making you feel better. I As for your questions: Before being diagnosed with celiac disease, were you diagnosed and treated for other things that were actually related to/tied to celiac disease? Yes. I was...
  6. I had an enlarged spleen only once (that I know of) and that was when I developed ITP (thrombocytopenia). If she has that, her blood and platelet counts will be low because the spleen is destroying platelets... it's a rare disorder and unlikely but if she is at anemic it could be something to give a quick look at. I hope she feels better soon... Poor kid...
  7. Ditto what mushroom said; I'm not familiar with those tests either.
  8. I have the zillion, or at least it feels that way. LOL As far as I understand it, those with untreated celiac are more likely to get multiple immune problems because you are keeping your body in a constant state of inflammation while eating the gluten. Other AI disorders will wax and wane but if a celiac eats gluten, he's fanning the autoimmune "flames...
  9. So the doctor didn't order blood tests? It's a really quick blod darw that any lab could do... If you want to check if it's celiac (vs Non-celiac gluten intolerance - which has the same symptoms but not the intestinal damage) you should request the blood tests and do them in the next day or two before the gluten really starts to clear from your body. The...
  10. i was a beast when I went gluten-free. Very cranky, tired and sore. I think it was on it's way out after 2-3 weeks though. Hopefully he'll feel better soon.
  11. My symptoms were just like your daughter's, they would come and go but were usually at their worst in the evenings. I would get her checked.
  12. My kids really like this bun recipe. We use coconut flour instead of almond due to allergies, and for a treat we add a swirl of cinnamon and brown sugar, or coconut. Quick and easy.
  13. That looks like a positive DGP IgG to me. It's not excessively about that cutoff line, but I always wonder who decides that cutoff is best for everyone. I figure that a positive is a positive, and that test is considered pretty specific to celiac unless I'm mistaken. i would consider it a celiac diagnosis and go gluten-free regardless of any further testing...
  14. Definitely. It could also be non-celiac gluten sensitivity which would give you the same symptoms but will be negative on all tests. When your testing is done, I would recommend a gluten free trial of a few months (3-6) and see if that helps. Lactose in milk can also cause these symptoms, and many celiacs are lactose intolerant. Best wishes to you. I...
  15. We western Canadians have always been for beards, flannel shirts and grunge... we just call it redneck! ... The mullet never died, it just went to live in rural Canada. Off topic... not skillfully done.
  16. I agree with the others that short bullets is the way to go. I would also give brief examples like "bloating in the upper abdomen so belly distends over belt line" or extreme jont pain in my left hip that makes coming down stairs difficult". Examples can help if you have a doctor who listens. I was going to mention the BC too. That can cause problems...
  17. Congratulations! I hope you figure out soon, and consider non-celiac gluten sensitivity if you continue to have problems.
  18. I'm so glad you figured out what was wrong! Good for you! I hope you continue to feel better on the gluten-free diet. BTW, are you in Alberta? It takes forever and a day to see a specialist here.
  19. Hope you continue to improve on the gluten-free diet... and welcome to the club.
  20. Low B12 can (as far as I know) be caused be a gluten intolerance, not just celiac. Also, H. pylori, infections and parasite (liketapeworm and Giardia lamblia) can cause low B12. I've also heard that people who take a lot of stomach antacids can have such reduced stomach acid that it makes B12 difficult to extract from foods. I would react to gluten with...
  21. I think your questions are great, but I don't think the medical community is close to answering them. they only admitted there was such a thing as autoantibodies about 50 years ago... It does seem that once the body gets confused once, it gets confused again and again. My body has attacked my intestines, thyroid and platelets; I think it would be naive to...
  22. I was glutened a couple of times in the first two months and I remember those reactions being the same as those I had before going gluten-free. The symptoms just seemed more noticeable because I was not longer used to stomach aches and bloating.
  23. Looks quite positive to me too... What a run around you had to go through with the testing! Ugh! I would be frustrated too. I hope your endoscopy goes well and gives clear results so your dealings with doctors is smooth sailing after that. When you get your diagnosis, you might want to get your B, D, ferritin, calcium, potassium and iron levels checked...
  24. Hmm. I respectfully disagree. There is a chance (about 25%) of getting a false negative, but false positives are very rare, especially is you test positive on two or more of the blood tests.
  25. We use SISU vit D 1000IU; it's D3. It comes in a small blue glass bottle. I take 2 to 4 a day and my kids take 1 or 2. They also come in 400IU but we were all borderline low with that. They are tiny like baby aspirins, and disolve in seconds. I also get Life brand one from Shoppers Drug Mart (Canada) that are bigger tablets but have a chocolate flavour. Yum...
