  1. I am sorry that your son is sick. I had a weak positive too, yet my biopsies revealed a Marsh Stage IIIB (moderate to severe damage). I tested positive only to the DGP IgA too and during follow-up testing too. I would ask for a complete celiac panel, as just a rise in the TTg can be associated with other AI issues like Crohn's. This will not...
  2. That HA1c can come down pretty fast if you are a type 2 diabetic. A lower carb, higher fat diet can be very helpful (it can lower your blood sugar in days......). Let's talk about the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. This guy is selling you a diet. I can tell you that your best bet is to focus on berries, veggies grown above ground, meats, fish, poultry...
  3. Disclosure....I'm not a teen, but I have a 15 year old daughter, who like you, is taking AP classes too. Stress can really impact your health and your acne, so can a lack of sleep. She just finished her finals this morning. What a relief! She told me that she had one academic friend who swears by doing her homework at 2:00 am! Well, all those cups of...
  4. Invest in a cheap meter from Walmart and start testing foods. Test 1 hour and two hours after your first bite. You will soon realize that carbs cause your blood glucose to rise. What you ate for breakfast? For me, that is the same as eating a cupcake! It raises my blood sugar. Read Blood Sugar 101 and learn about diabetes. There is no perfect diabetes...
  5. Welcome! Actually, many things can cause intestinal damage: Open Original Shared Link But did you have the complete celiac panel? I ask because I test negative to the common celiac disease screening test -- the TTG. The TTG is good but does not catch all celiacs. The others include the DGP and EMA (both IGA and IGG versions).
  6. You have a positive on the celiac panel. Take your results and go back to the GI and get biopsies of the small intestine. That is the standard protocol. Maybe find another GI. Your current one does not seem to be celiac-savvy. ?
  7. I am not a doctor, didn't you say in a previous post that your doctor suspected another autoimmune disorder, pemphigoid? I read that there is a specific antibodies test for this condition. Maybe that will help with a diagnosis. If negative, then you could assume you have DH which requires a super strict gluten-free diet. (I went back and read your horrible...
  8. This original posting is very old (2005), so it is doubtful that anyone will reply. I can tell you about a gluten challenge: Open Original Shared Link Why not eat bread, crackers or other gluten-containing products? Just curious.
  9. It is a very tough decision to make as a parent as to whether or not an intestinal biopsy is best for your child. In Europe they are opting to avoid an endoscopy but follow a careful criteria for diagnosis. But a recent study released by Mass General Hospital and Boston Children's Hospital (a leading celiac research center) found that 20% of children are...
  10. Read our Newbie 101 thread under the "Coping" section. It contains lots of great tips and advice. Karen's right (just reinforcing), your body needs to heal. I would strongly recommend that your supplements are certified gluten free at least until you really get the gluten-free diet down. Check all medications too. Best defense is to rest and eat...
  11. I am sorry that your son has celiac disease. If you are not sure or are questioning his diagnosis, you should consider an intestinal biopsy (based on celiac expert recommendations). Unfortunately, he would have to be back on a gluten diet for at least two to four weeks. That said, I think you should research the effects of a celiac consuming gluten...
  12. This might help. It's our Newbie 101 thread about gluten-free tips, etc.
  13. Karen is right. I am not sure you understand what is comprised of a complete celiac blood panel (and maybe even your doctor who referred you to an allergist for both allergy and celiac disease testing). With all the possible complications of celiac disease, I would request another opinion from a more celiac-savvy GI. I don't know your financial/insurance...
  14. Who can say? We all exhibit different symptoms when glutened (celiac disease or NCGI). The only way to know for sure is an celiac disease blood test for a definite confirmation. But we can't do that after every glutening. And believe me, glutening symptoms can change. Best to move forward and avoid eating out. I know that no restaurant food is worth...
  15. The risk for the pill camera getting stuck is extremely small. That said, my niece was in the same position as you. She was three days from getting on a plane to Europe with her family (including me). I went with her on her visit. I thought I would meet her GI. Instead, it was for the pill camera prep. My niece wisely chose to postpone the camera just...
  16. Ugh! That's horrible. I personally recommend only certified gluten-free supplements, especially for newbies (you are sick and it's worth the extra cost to help reduce worry and help speed recovery). But after three years, I should no signs (lab results) of any nutritional deficiencies and I have not taken even a daily multiple since my diagnosis. The only...
  17. Maybe a new intolerance like fructose or lactose? How long a celiac? Go to a diet of fresh meats and poultry and veggies that are cooked well (think stews and soups....mushy) for a week or a month, avoiding white potatoes and other nightshades. If you feel better, start adding foods back in slowly and keep a journal. Re-check your diet and...
  18. My diagnosis ocurred during my 25th wedding anniversary. I tossed a lot of things that were just worn out and old. It was a great excuse to spend money. This included most plastics (Tupperware-type items go funny anyway....), wooden items, mixer, speciality baking pans (too hard to clean), etc. I kept my favorite cookie sheets and i use parchment paper...
  19. No, it means that because you have intestinal damage, it takes longer for you to process food. Anemia was my only symptom (or so I thought) when I was diagnosed, but I was constipated too. I had a BM everyday, so I did not realize it. My GI advised a double prep -- meaning a liquid diet for several days instead of just one. Maybe this is the reason. ...
  20. I don't think we were not being compassionate -- just being realists. Without a diagnosis, you are going to get some eye-rolling. Even your hubby is not very supportive. I completely get it. My hubby went gluten-free per the poor advice of his GP (MD) and my allergist. It worked though. Why would you maintain a strict gluten-free diet for 15 years...
  21. Welcome! Kuddos for you, Mimi, for trying to keep your grandson safe. Honestly, being gluten free is more important in many ways (and harder) than maintaining his blood sugar (insulin can be adjusted). I would read our "Newbie 101" section under "Coping" for valuable tips. Most gluten free foods are full of sugar and carbs. Look for natural...
  22. I can see your dilemma, but can you really convince your daughter to go gluten free without any proof? I am all for being gluten free. I have celiac disease and Hashimoto's. I can say that my thyroid is no longer enlarged and the nodules that I had are gone. Was it the diet? Was it reduced inflammation? Who knows? I am curious. Have your thyroid...
  23. Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, Ferritin: 2, Always NEGATIVE any TTG tests, Positive only to DGP IgA, Marsh Stage IIIB found on biopsies. That is me. My anemia was blamed on Thalassemia (genetic anemia) and just being a woman. Luckily, i went to a GI for a routine colonoscopy (yep, over 50). He ran the entire celiac blood panel and not just the screening TTG...

    ARCHIVED Five Guys?

Karen has great advice. I always have non-perishable food in my purse. Often I carry a small cooler and throw in veggies, nuts, yogurt, meat, or fruit to keep in my car while running errands or meeting up with friends. I have nicer tote coolers that looks more presentable (nothing sends out geeky signals when carrying an Igloo cooler). Still use the...
  25. My sister-in law gets these all the time. Sun and stress are her triggers.
