ARCHIVED Bloating, Pain Still 7 Days Afterwards
Nancym replied to hayley3's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It might help. A lot of celiacs get SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth). normally bowel flora stays in the large intestines. So depriving those buggers of sugars and starches might reduce the population. That is probably why fasting helps you. But remember that dairy products like yogurt and honey (obviously) contain sugar, there's lactose... -
ARCHIVED Low Carb And Gluten Free Chocolate Desert
Nancym replied to wildkat's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
There's a ton of recipes here: Open Original Shared Link I did a "lower carb" flourless chocolate cake for NY eves that came out fabulous. I used unsweetened chocolate for 1/2 the chocolate and semi-sweet chips for the other half. Then I used some erythritol to sweeten (don't try splenda and chocolate, it doesn't work!). I'd love to try it again... -
I tell house guests not to bring gluten containing foods into the house. My nephew did anyway, but at least he kept them in his room.

Nancym replied to Eric-C's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease

ARCHIVED Continuing Problems After Going Gluten Free?
Nancym replied to chlobo's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Some of those digestive enzymes might be cultured on wheat. You should check that very carefully. -
Ah! You are nice Daddy to support your daughter like that! Dad, your daughter inherited her genetics from you and Mom. More than likely one or both of you also are celiacs or at least gluten intolerant. Congratulations! This was an unexpected present. Now you can avoid a lot of potentially terrible things that happen to undiagnosed celiacs and you...

ARCHIVED Enterolab Questions
Nancym replied to ItchyMeredith's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Dr. Fine hasn't published his results in a peer reviewed format so that's why few accept his tests. I've heard him say for a couple of years in a row that he's going to publish. So I think I've pretty much given up on that happening now. He's got a very impressive CV and certainly has helped a lot of people. Sometimes you gotta just evaluate the information... -
I was just going to add that something like addison's disease or insulin resistance (or type 2 diabetes) could also explain weight gain. Insulin resistance used to be pretty rare in children but with the diet people are feeding kids these days, it is getting much more common. You should have mention these two things to your doctor.

ARCHIVED Depressing Teeth Decay Problem
Nancym replied to Alternative mama's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hear, hear! Or is it here, here? I can never remember. I always wondered how those primitive cultures never flossed or brushed yet had such amazing teeth. It was about the time of the ancient Egyptians where the diet changed to lots of starches and grains that anthropologists started unearthing skeletons with tooth decay, osteoporosis, and other issues... -
ARCHIVED Ribbon-like Stools From Colon Spasms Or Pellet Stool
Nancym replied to hayley3's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I get both too. I think the skinny poops are from the intestines contracting and narrowing, probably in reaction to something hurting it. I get the other sort of poops when I am constipated. dairy constipates the heck out of me. Also sometimes after a serious bout of not-quite-diarrhea-but-definitely-something-wrong I'll go to the other extreme of constipation... -
ARCHIVED Another Endoscopy....intense Nausea And Vomiting
Nancym replied to gfcookie's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
There's more than just wheat that hurts my GI Tract! I've had to try elimination diets numerous times to find culprits. So far I'm finding that chocolate, corn, dairy and probably other things are issues. When I'm having issues I retreat to a strictly meat and veggie diet (non-starchy veggies). I let the gut settle then try to add back things I was... -
ARCHIVED Depressing Teeth Decay Problem
Nancym replied to Alternative mama's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It's not just gluten, it is also the sweets and starches we eat. I've adopted a strict, Paleo diet and my hygienist is raving over the health of my mouth. She tells me I have signs of health they usually only see in children. I don't eat any starches or sugars, other than limited fruit sugars in fruits from time to time. And I have a history of many... -
ARCHIVED Does Everyone Have Testing Before Trying Diet?
Nancym replied to elmuyloco5's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I went gluten-free first, then did testing from Enterolab.com. I think the only way you can go wrong with trying the diet first is to try to get tested later, test negative, and then decide that you don't need to be gluten-free even with positive dietary outcomes. So just take your dietary trial as serious as if you had had the invasive testing procedures... -

ARCHIVED Enterolab Questions
Nancym replied to bisja's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Your mileage may vary but my doctor accepted my Enterolab results. However... I would be willing to say most won't. I knew from dietary trial that gluten free was for me but I was curious about what Enterolab would say. It coincided quite nicely with my own dietary trial. Both dairy and wheat cause me problems. I don't have a lot of faith in mainstream... -
ARCHIVED Lacking Something?
Nancym replied to carecare's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Lacking certain minerals seem to be associated with cramping like that. I'd make sure he is getting plenty of potassium, magnesium and calcium although I actually seem to have MORE cramping if I have too much calcium. -
For what it is worth, two things give me sinus issues: Low thyroid status and dairy products.

ARCHIVED Enterolab Vs. Blood Panel And Biopsy
Nancym replied to elye's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Really, that hard to believe? Gluten goes to the gut first. Your gut gets the first opportunity to have an immune response. It only gets to the blood after the damage in the gut is very severe. A study says that 30% of celiacs have negative blood tests and positive biopsies. Then there's the issue with people who are "gluten sensitive". We *know*... -
I found that continuing intestinal symptoms were due to other foods I'm sensitive to. When I follow a very basic diet of meat and veggies (and a few other things) my IBS clears up. So I'm always trying to identify what the heck it was I ate that set me off. The "Big Eight" list of things people are allergic to (food-wise) is probably a good place to...

ARCHIVED My House Is Now Gluten Free With Amazing Results!
Nancym replied to Aidans Grandma's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I was diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of autoimmune arthritis, and was in terrible pain most of the time. I not only went gluten free but I adopted a paleo style diet which is basically no grains, no dairy, no refined starches or sugars. Pretty much I eat meat, fish, poultry, non-starchy veggies, low sugar fruits (berries being the best of... -
ARCHIVED Just Got Sons Results From Enterolab...
Nancym replied to holiday16's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
A young child with a heart condition probably isn't suffering from clogged arteries it's probably a heart defect. Still, that book is excellent and everyone should read it. I'm pretty sure having low IgA means those test results could be skewed. Send an email to Enterolab and ask about that, they're great about answering emails. Meanwhile, you might... -
ARCHIVED Anybody Shop At Costco?
Nancym replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I like their meats! I get this enormous roasts and cut them into 2 pound chunks and freeze them for use later. I also like their rotisserie chicken. I get coffee there too. And I pick up electronics, kitchen gadgets, stuff like that. Their produce is pretty good too! -
ARCHIVED Stiff Finger Joints Ever Since Gluten Free
Nancym replied to Valeria V's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Any number of autoimmune diseases could cause stiff fingers, even just plain old osteoarthritis. One that popped into my head that I sure hope you don't have is Open Original Shared Link. I've had really great success with my own arthritic autoimmune disease by follow The Paleo Diet, or one similar to that. You can google that for more info or click... -
With me it is tiny pin prick feelings ever now and then, feels like a pin stabbing me. I think it might be a b vitamin deficiency.

ARCHIVED Is Gluten Intolerance Stage One Of Celiac Disease?
Nancym replied to CCM's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Don't bother getting technical with people who ask, they're usually not really interested in a detailed answer and they're likely to think you're a hypochondriac if you explain that you're not a celiac but... Just leave it at "yes, I'm a celiac" or for the people that really are clueless tell them you're allergic to wheat, barley, rye and oats.
