ARCHIVED Wow $ Of Xanthum Gum
debmidge replied to Texas Celiac's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
in NY metro area the Xanthan gum pricing is the about same as what you paid in TX. i've seen 12 oz for $12 and $13 depending on what store I'm in. I've purchased mail order at about same pricing. My next question is, "why is it so expensive?" -
ARCHIVED Celiac Stomach?
debmidge replied to BRUMI1968's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Could it also mean the "sounds" of the stomach that comes from a celiac who is not gluten-free? Or the gas bloating and diarrhea symptoms? My mother calls my lactose intolerance my "Italian Stomach." -
ARCHIVED Whole Foods
debmidge replied to hez's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
One would think that the cereal manufacturers would try to elminate as many unnecessary ingredients (malt) as possible to reduce their costs.....I mean that always happens to the the food that is on the "OK" list now and then anyway. -
ARCHIVED Question For Those Age 15-25... Ish
debmidge replied to lorka150's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Why use the age group of 15-25? Is there a particular reason that it's not ok for 21-35 year olds to enter into this conversation? There's a societial difference between those who are under 21 and those over (drinking is one thing). That could come into play during a party/wedding. -
ARCHIVED New To Boards--here For My Hubby (long)
debmidge replied to Stacie H.'s topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
[Quote) "So far our entire married life has been revolving around his health issues. The truth is while we had a beautiful wedding day, he didn't get to enjoy it. We never went on a honeymoon of any kind. And last summer we spent two weeks in Newfoundland, Canada. He's from there, and his parents threw us a second reception. It was so fun, but he was... -
ARCHIVED Vegetarian Vs Eating Meat
debmidge replied to schuyler's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
If you go to their website you can look up health food/grocery stores which carry a limited line of their products. Health food store near me carries their hot dog buns but not their hamburger buns (for example) and he's not even an offical store - he gets it from his distributor. He's not on Kinnikinnick's official list. -
Are you going to the one on I don't remember, 43rd, 44th St.? Was there 6 years ago (pre gluten-free situation). They serve food "family style". I'd call them before going there and see what they say. they are not a chain like Outback or Olive Garden.

It's curious as to why people are such idiots like this woman whom you work for. For instance, no one urges Hindus to eat meat when they say they abstain from it, nor do I chide my kosher friends about why they won't eat non kosher food. I respect their wishes to maintain their special diets and actually help them find a restaurant (where we should go...

ARCHIVED Just Curious As To How You Achieved Diagnosis
debmidge replied to Chako's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hubby has celiac - he went thru many drs. who misdiagnosed him w/IBS Colitis Ilietis one accused him of being a drug addict when he was not, finally the last one told him he need mental help. I hold the last one more accountable as the specific blood tests were available then and he should have done an endoscopy and he did not and perhaps in 1994 hubby... -
ARCHIVED Ibs Leads To Other Diseases....
debmidge replied to danikali's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
QUOTE FROM PRIOR POST ABOVE : Does the bloodwork for IBS run the same as for celiac? I mean the IgA and IgG in terms of levels? Do they just diagnose IBS if they have nothing via bloodwork and a negative scope? -
ARCHIVED Parkinson's--a Celiac Connection?
debmidge replied to elye's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
What is the procedure for a PET scan? Is fasting involved? How long does it take? Do they inject anything into you? Do you have to drink something? -
ARCHIVED Ok, I Gotta Ask This...
debmidge replied to JerryK's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My husband has looking anexoric and sickly (gray pasty coloring on face, deep dark circles around eyes) for many years and doctors would look past that and rely on blood tests (a celiac disease blood test was never done until 2003) and since blood work was normal they'd think he was well (despite looking like a walking skeleton). One gastro from a very... -
Hubby went thru this right before he was properly diagnosed and although nothing serious was found in throat, he does have diagnosis of GERD and hiatal hernia. In beginning before celiac disease diagnosis he thought it was throat cancer (as usual the first thought is the worst thought).

Hubby until after he began gluten-free diet, but that is just a coincidence as he probably would have come down with it anyway. but now we are 2.5 years on gluten-free and neuropathy is still hanging around. I read that there are genetic connections apart from celiac and/or wheat allergy. Perhaps he would have gotten neuropathy anyway even if he wasn...

ARCHIVED What Is "wasting" Or "wasted Buttocks"?
debmidge replied to wonkabar's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Lack of butt fat is a concern for celiacs (young and old), and especially for those who have been mis or un-diagnosed for a while. It means that you've been impacted either so long or intensely that your body went thru the fat in the normal areas and is eliminating it in the next areas to go, like butt, feet, face, etc. Hubby's feet are so thin, foot... -
ARCHIVED Fat Malabsorption
debmidge replied to Beccc's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Other digestive disorders (Chrone's Disease and some types of colitis) can cause fat malabsorption. Pancreatic tumors are another cause, and then there's disorders were the food goes through the system too quickly and you have constant diarrhea. Also alcoholism does something funky to liver (as I have heard and I don't know specifics, but it results in... -
ARCHIVED Parkinson's--a Celiac Connection?
debmidge replied to elye's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Another related disorder "restless leg syndrome" My husband's restless leg syndrome increases when he is on serritonin uptake or reuptake anti depressants. There has to be a connection between celiac disease and these neurological motor diseases. -
ARCHIVED Modified Food Starch And Caramel Coloring
debmidge replied to dionnek's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
gfp, you nailed the problem on the head. Unless the company making the product has a particular desire to always use a non gluten starch, they will use whatever is cheaper for them. That's what gives them a higher profit. Remember, it's a fact of life that they are in business to make money and they'll take the short cut 9 times out of ten, unless... -
ARCHIVED Another Question For You Veterans
debmidge replied to JerryK's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hubby avoids caffeine of coffee and colas due to it's "flushing" properties. -
ARCHIVED Fake Paper Cuts
debmidge replied to Lister's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
You're body is recovering, if you are gluten-free and it's responding to the new diet, but it might take some time for the vitamin level to get back up to where it should be. The skin might be still thinking you have deficiencies. Vitamin B's are stored in body and when stores deplete, you need to "re-stock." The re stocking takes months of taking... -
My husband's newest development due to a reduced immune system is now he has knee bursitis and has to have his knee bursa (both knees) removed. Both GP and my chiropractor says it's a strong possibility that it's the body attacking itself as he doesn't have an occupation (never did) where he worked on his knees like a plumber or carpenter or carpet installer...

ARCHIVED Vegan Diet And Wheat/gluten Intolerance Or Celiac
debmidge replied to AndreaB's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I think celiac is not picky on whom it visits: the vegan and meat eater are equal targets. Celiac is an immune system disease not primarily a digestive disorder - it only manifests itself in gut. Think about how babies come down with celiac...they don't eat meat first 6 mos of their lives, maybe soy milk, maybe only breastfed and then boom they start...
