  1. wow, I've never heard of this "teenage honeymoon" thing (I'm still new to this), but that is exactly what happened to me! I had unexplained dizzyness/blacking out spells starting at the age of 13, with severe anemia (no amount of iron helped) for several years, then things got better in high school but developed wierd rash on my shins and top of my hands...
  2. Dr. Schar - love these! They are more like Ritz than Saltines, and pretty expensive, but they are the best I've found so far. I also have tried the Glutino saltine type cracker and they are pretty good - not much flavor so you need cheese or something on them. I eat the Dr. Schar plain, they are that good.
  3. I'd also like to add that you need to make sure you have different condiments (butter, peanut butter, mayo, etc.) so that someone doesn't dip a knife in, spread it on regular bread, and redip. That is a big CC issue. Or you can just teach them not to redip, but that can be difficult as sometimes you mindlessly do it (especially if you are making a sandwhich...
  4. I use eggbeaters in all my baking (even made some gluten-free Pantry French Bread with it and it worked!). I tried the applesauce in the brownies thing and that didn't work (too rubbery), so I basically am sticking with just the egg substitutes - at least that's a little lower fat Oh, and I did try applesauce in the Pamela's Baking mix muffins and those...
  5. I stopped having a period back in 2003 when I went of the pill (trying to get pregnant) and after 14 months and several rounds of meds to induce a period, I finally had one and got pregnant. Then, after having my baby in Sept. 2004, I have not had another period since. Yet, even though I never had a period, I am now pregnant! I am not sure if it is...
  6. I have some Wyler's beef boullion cubes and need to know if they are gluten-free - for some reason I'm thinking I saw somewhere that they were not, but it does not list anything on the label that contains wheat, etc. It does have hydrolized soy protein - is this a problem? Of course, their 800 n umber is closed until Monday.
  7. does anyone know if Wyler's beef boullion contains gluten? It doesn't have anything with "wheat" on it, but has hydrolized soy protien and natural flavors.
  8. Tylenol is gluten-free and safe for pregnancy (at least here in the US it is gluten-free) - it is on all the gluten free lists. You aren't supposed to take Advil/Ibuprophen or Asprin when pregnant. Could also be caused by caffein withdrawal (if you've recently given up caffein while pregnant - I think that's my problem).
  9. For the twice baked potatoes, after you bake them and take out the pulp, you can mash it with anything (combo of cream cheese and chives, butter, sourcream, garlic powder, parsley, chopped cooked broccoli, etc.). My favorite is cream cheese (I only use about a tablespoon for 2 potatoes) and some steamed chopped broccoli and a little salt. I"ve also done...
  10. From the research I've done (and I've done a lot - I had hypothyroid that switched to hyper when I went gluten-free and then back to hypo b/c I developed a goiter), you definitely need the T3 and T4 tested along with TSH - TSH alone, like the other poster said, just does not do any good. I'd find a new dr
  11. I'll do cold rice or quinoa salads (mixture of any veggies/nuts/dried fruit and fresh parsley or cilantro), or I make wraps with corn tortillas or brown rice tortillas (like these better), turkey and cream cheese or hummus and anything or cream cheese and salmon - really anything goes! Also, if I make twice baked potatoes I make a bunch since it takes so...
  12. Thanks - I had actually been thinking about getting that book, so now I think I will. Just read Donna Korn's Wheat Free Worry Free and it was good for a beginner, but doesn't go into pregnancy issues (had some good recipes and shopping lists though, and good information in general). It is exciting if not a little scary with the celiac this time around!
  13. I just found out I am pregnant (didn't think it was possible since we had such a hard time with our first, and I haven't had a period in 3 years!). I was dx with celiac 6 months ago and am gluten-free and pretty much dairy free (except for the occasional cheese and ice cream which doesn't seem to bother me like milk does) - how do I get enough calcium for...
  14. Well, I just found out that I'm pregnant again (with my second), and that might explain why I've been so hungry this last month or so. Like you, i wake up in the middle of the night hungy (although so far I haven't let myself eat). I recently (past month) gained 16 pounds, but I had lost 8 pounds the month prior to that (just found out i have a goiter so...
  15. Can't wait to try it! Thanks for reminding me - didn't realize it had opened.
  16. Thanks so much!
  17. I second the Enterolab (or Kimball Labs) for genetic testing at least if you suspect celiac (not sure if you can do the stool test for celiac through Enterolab when you aren't consuming gluten or not, but I know going the dr. route when you haven't been consuming gluten won't do any good). I would think if you have either gene for celiac, and you are feeling...
  18. I am still not feeling any better (been 6 months) and my follow up biopsy still showed significant damage (my villi were flat), however, that being said, people were telling me after a few weeks into the gluten-free diet that I looked better (color in face, etc.), and just recenlty I noticed that I have not had as many unexplained bruises on my legs (and...
  19. Thanks everyone - this is all very good information - there seem to be way more options out there that I never even heard of. I will talk to my dr. about several of these and see what she thinks might be good to start with.
  20. I would love to know where in Seattle you go - we are planning a trip there (well, my husband has a conference and I'm tagging along) in April. Not sure yet where we will be staying but would love recommendations on eating and if there are any specific areas you recommend visiting.
  21. I recently got some blood tests back that showed a low Glom Filt Rate (57.2) and a high Phosphorus serum (5.0), which from what I've read are both signs of kidney problems. I had been to a kidney dr. about 3 years ago b/c a reproductive endo that I was seeing (this was way before dx for celiac) thought I might have kidney problems (I urinate excessively...
  22. I would make sure your dr. monitors your thyroid before you reduce your meds. I was hypo before going gluten-free (and on Levoxyl) and then 3 months into the gluten-free diet became hyper so stopped taking the meds, then 6-8 weeks later tested hypo again (extremely) so back on the meds. Just got an ultrasound of my thyroid b/c I"ve been having a throbbing...
  23. I actually force myself to work out, no matter how crappy I feel. If I'm having the D and need to stay near the bathroom, then I'll just go to the gym and do weights and maybe stairmaster, but if the D isn't an issue then I'll get outside for a jog, and so what if I have to walk some, at least I'm outside and that lifts my spirits. I find exercise is really...
  24. I haven't tried substituting for my old "regular" recipes yet, but I have made many gluten-free baked goods that all have turned out great! I've been using the brown rice flour, potato starch/tapioca starch mix (1c; 2/3c; 1/3c. respectively I think) or else I've been using Pamela's gluten-free Baking and Pancake mix - it is great for a lot of things (just...
