Shoulder Bouncing Laughter
We're at the hotel bar area chatting with fellow vacationers, when my bf whispers to me, "This lady thinks I'm a pro-athlete." This is typical, so I wondered why he looked so flustered. I say, "Did you tell her you're not?" He says, "Yes, but she won't take no for an answer. She thinks I'm trying to be private." fyi, the Detective in 6'3" and slim with broad shoulders, and often gets "noticed" by onlookers (at airport or concerts, usually) as a potential professional athlete-someone theyVacation Wanes
We discovered a new favorite song on our Cozumel island adventure, "Besa Me Mucho". We heard it at the musical show at our all-inclusive resort-- while the performers were singing, much to my surprise, mi novio (bf) started to sing along (he remembered the song from his CA Boys Choir Days -where he sang alongside Lenny Kravitz). My knees were like butter.... So at dinners in the downtown (outdoor dining) we paid the walk-up musicians to serenade us throughout the trip...great memory. We wereHello Greenville, Sc Celiacs!
Greetings fellow Celiacs, GIGs, Wheat Allergens and respective family members. We are new to Greenville, SC (moved here from Richmond, VA) and are trying to build up our Greenville gluten-free restaurant list. My wife and daughter are Celiacs - diagnosed almost a year ago. Below are some suggestions we have identified, but we are also looking for your input. Please post gluten-free establishments you know of or share your experiences (good and bad). Here are some good finds we have made thuThere Are Nuts In My Soup
Latest Dietary Guidelines from the U.S. Department of Agriculture endorse eating three to five servings of nuts (20 to 30 pecan halves equals one serving), seeds or legumes each day in order to maintain a healthy diet. Nuts are gluten free! They do not have cholesterol. While nuts and seeds tend to be very high in fat and calories, most of the fat is polyunsaturated or monounsaturated (e.g. almonds, pecans, walnuts). Nuts are high in vitamins and minerals and are an excellent ingredient for cOutnumbered - Celiac Disease and Multiple Chemical Sensitivities
Do you buy lottery tickets, bet on the horses, frequent casinos, or take your vacation in LasVegas? Over seven decades, I've won once at roulette, once on the slots and asked someone at the racetrack to put down my two dollars on a thirty three to one shot- - - a filly with the same name as my poodle. The horse won but the friend forgot to place the wager. What was even worse, subsequently the poodle ran away and died from eating garbage. With health matters, bookmakers would have a blast withquestion on brands
Okay so earlier I posted about shampoos, and stuff like that..heres the question, What brands are okay to use? It seems like everytime i find something i like my hair starts falling out again, or my skin breaks out...and if i quit using it it stops. I think it is possible i have celiac and the gluten allergy. which makes life so much better. Is there like a group or club for people with celiac, because I need some serious knowledge fast. I am feeling alot better now that I am on the Gluten free"Sugar, Ah, Honey, Honey"
"Sugar, Ah,Honey, Honey" is the title of the hit song of 1969 by a garage band called, "The Archies." Their lyric includes this lovely analogy, "Like the summer sunshine pour your sweetness over me." What a melodic way to describe my primary sweetener of choice and necessity. HONEY! Golden, clear pasteurized honey with few or no traces of bee pollen is a natural, anti oxidant and an ideal ingredient for cooking and baking as well for use as a syrup. Once accustomed to honey, you may find refinWhat A Swell Party This Is!
Do you wear paper cuts like medals of honor, because being a Celiac means not licking glue strips on envelopes? This morning I moistened the sealer on an envelope with a wet cloth and was soon reeling and swelling like a watermelon on growth hormones just from the fumes out-gassing. The diet I follow does not mandate avoiding substances that are not ingested. So while toothpaste would qualify for restriction, glue and play-dough would not. Which is why historically, I paid little attentionIt Takes A Villus
I'm not much on closeups of bloody surgery scenes like those on TV series like"Grey's Anatomy" or "Nip/Tuck." The closest I've came to seeing my own interior was watching my dreaded and dreadful second colonoscopy on closed circuit video, commercial free while it was in progress...and while I was semi comatose! Our insides exist largely as an invisible world until something goes wrong, something like Celiac Disease. Electron microscopes provide two million degrees of magnification making closInfertility and Celiac Disease
I am looking for sources or studies that help connect the link with celiac disease and infertility. I am looking to overturn a decision my doctor told me. Who can help? Where can I go? It is really frustrating to be told that I will never have kids and that is all I have ever really wanted. I have tried to go back on birth control and after three months I am still not regulated. I am pretty frustrated and not sure what to do. Who can help?Layered Vegetable Baked Pasta (gluten-free Vegetarian Lasagna)
Now that it's officially winter I'm thinking more and more about baked and roasted dishes. And one of my all-time favorite baked dishes is lasagna. I could eat lasagna three times a day and not get tired of it, (and have!). The only trouble is getting a hold of gluten-free lasagna noodles. I've seen and used them before, but most stores only carry gluten-free- penne, spaghetti, and sometimes rotini. Not a big deal, I simply substitute a layer of penne pasta for the lasagna noodles. It still tastSecond Helpings - More Specific Carbohydrate Diet Cake Recipes
Twice a year, twenty or more people on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet gather for a potluck luncheon in Southern Ontario, Canada, usually in Toronto. Over time, the roster of homemade food from these occasions has become classic. We are such a small segment of the world-wide Specific Carbohydrate Diet community, so it is flattering that our recipes rank high in popularity among those recipe sites and cookbooks that abound with the Specific Carbohydrate Diet gluten-free creations. When it comes to technical and scientific articles on Celiac disease, this web site is a gold mine! I've been here less than a month and although I haven't read every article and blog, I certainly plan to. I've been too busy writing my own thoughts and have some about the old KISS formula, "Keep It Simple Stupid." Well, we are neither simple nor stupid; Celiac disease is far from simple. I am going to over simplify the comparison of two diets: The Gluten-Free Casein-Free diet and the SpeciLet Them Eat Cake - Specific Carbohydrate Diet Cake Recipe
Celiac disease has a long and ancient history. The Roman physician, Aretaeus chronicled the very symptoms we associate with it today and a number of historical celebrities, including royalty were afflicted. When Marie Antoinette uttered her most famous quote, she didn't have us in mind. Still it's good to know that "Let them eat cake," can be applied to us. Elaine Gottschall had her daughter treated by celiac specialist, Dr. S.V. Haas over half a century ago. She received few instructions. anNeed Bread Recipe
My son (9 yrs. old) was just diagnosed with Celiac last week. He also has sensitivity to dairy and soy. Does anyone have a bread recipe (kid friendly!) that is gluten-free, diary-free and soy-free? Thank you!Gi Update And Christmas News
Update from the GI from last week.... Shaylin~ She is now in the 50% for height and the 70% for weight(30 lbs. That is up from 18 at this time last year ). The Dr is not so pleased that her IgG is still elavated so we get to do another endoscophy with biopsy after the holidays. She is thinking that Shaylin may not be healing correctly. Then she wants us to see a celiac disease nutritional specialist at UCSD research division after our appt with the food allergist. If Shaylin does haveWelcome To My Journal
Ok, it has been a long while since I have attempeted to journal and I figured that it was about time that I tried it again. HadHomemade Foods Versus Store Bought Foods
One of the major criticisms leveled against The Specific Carbohydrate Diet is that 99% of food must be prepared at home. There are hundreds of convenience products available in markets and specialty stores for other Gluten Free diets. The Specific Carbohydrate Diet suggests homemade food is safest to ensure better results on the diet. Why such strictness on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet? There are a number of reasons why on the whole, homemade items are necessary for the Specific CarbohydrateOn the Specific Carbohydrate Diet Rice is "No dice!"
Rice has a reputation as a super food. The Specific Carbohydrate Diet excludes rice for adults. Children with weak digestive systems or Autism Spectrum Disorder should avoid rice. In her book "Breaking the Vicious Cycle," Elaine Gottschall quotes Juliano (1972) "Some kinds of rice contain small amounts of amylopectin starch and large amounts of amylose starch, other types contain only amylopectin starch." Rice is a grain which contains anti-nutrients. A portion of the grain's seed system isFinger Lickin Ribs
I've been venturing out to dine a lot lately, eluding the Gluten Fiend and his cohorts, the Cross Contamination Crew (knock on wood). Devoured tantalizing ribs at Tony Roma's (all sauces & meats are gluten free) and corn on cob and potato. At Chili's (I often go there and eat ribs with no ill effects), I discovered a little trick. My daughter was "colicky" for 18 months - that is what the doc's said. By the time we turned to Eastern medicine, I was exhausted due to the lack of sleep, I was confused, as I had been told by the medical establishment, to ignore my instincts as a new mom, I was frustrated that nobody believed me and I was saddened that I could not hep my daughter. Then Robert, a mysteriously talented acupuncturist and energy healer. We went to see him from a recommendation from my sister, whose husband had bee1 Of 3 Tests Not Done - Is It Crucial?
I am just now being tested for celiac's disease. My doctor ordered 3 tests - IGA, Serum; Gliadin AB; Tissue Transglutaminase AB IGA. The first and last appear to be within normal limits. However, the middle test, Gliadin AB, was not done as the lab had an "accident" with my specimen. Does anyone know if it would be wise for me to have this test done, even though the other 2 suggest that I do not have Celiac's? I don't necessarily have the classic symptoms of Celiac - just trying to determin-

Yes, I have one of the older models and have tested many products with it. For me it seems like a valuable tool and I have used it to test foods that I eat regularly, which are naturally gluten-free, for example salsa, refried beans, etc.

Has anyone tried the NIMA gluten detector? I'm seriously thinking of investing in one. I haven't eaten out at a restaurant since my late diagnosis 4 years ago (I'm 55 in March) Any information would be greatly appreciated
