  1. You have to ingest flour to cause a Celiac reaction and you can ingest it if a bag of flour was spilled and there is airborne flour ...that is a no-brainer. But if there is no airborne flour and you just walk down the flour aisle, the odds of a true Celiac reaction are pretty slim. There are many types of reactions and allergic reactions are just as common...
  2. I think you definitley need to look into adrenal fatigue and diabetes, with those symptoms you are having. Sometimes, when we go gluten-free, other things surface because the symptoms are no longer hidden by the Celiac. I had no idea I had a problem with dairy until I went gluten-free because the symptoms are similar and by eliminating the gluten, the dairy...
  3. I came upon this website that might be of help to you: Open Original Shared Link It is good that you are doing this because you need to get back on the horse and live life and not be afraid to travel. I have been doing this since 2005 and yes, I have been glutened a few times while traveling but it may happen, it may not. You will become more comfortable...
  4. I guess I don't understand.....if your diet is that restricted that you feel you cannot eat any cereal grains and 1 ppm will make you sick, why would you go into a gluten free store and expect to find a lot to eat? These places cater to replacement gluten-free foods that the vast majority of Celiacs can tolerate just fine. Besides the fact that no one is...
  5. Here are 2 websites that may be of help to you in finding food. I use them a lot when I travel. Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link Have fun!
  6. niese......I am a very, very sensitive celiac who does not screen anything but lip products and hand creme. It is not hard at all to NOT gluten yourself, unless you have bad habits like not washing your hands before you eat. Who doesn't wash their hands after applying make-up? You do not want make-up on your clothes because it can stain them permanently...
  7. Adalaide.....thyroid can cause neuro symptoms also, so you cannot say for sure that this isn't a thyroid problem. The pills taken for thyroid disease are not medications with side effects. They are natural or synthetic hormone replacement for the hormones your body isn't making enough of. There are no side effects to thyroid meds unless you take too much...
  8. You have a good sense of humor, VeggieGal! Once gluten-free, you will notice that you start to feel reactions more because you have cleaned out your system, so to speak, and can now feel what gluten does to your gut. My reactions are horrible and I go to great lengths for that not to happen. But this is a good sign.....you are healing and...
  9. I second this advice. Good work, Dr. pricklypear!
  10. Let us know how you do with this beer, VeggieGal, because barley malt is used in the ingredients list but they have a process, which is proprietary, that strips the gluten protein from the barley malt down to less than 6ppm's. I am always interested to see how people tolerate this type of product! I hope all is well because you certainly deserve a beer...
  11. I thought you would so thank you!
  12. Amazing that Canada is having temps like these. And here I was thinking of a possible retirement place to avoid the extreme heat when I get older! It is very hot here in Boston but the humidity level is at 49% also...which is drier than it's been for awhile. I thought it more bearable today than the past week because it was like soup outside then...
  13. Addy........please have a thyroid panel done. I hate to sound like a broken record but having a low thyroid can make you anemic. Trust me on this one. I have been there and it wasn't pretty. I ended up anemic from a thyroid swing to low and then popped with shingles from the anemia. Read your post. You are so damn bone tired all the time. That can...
  14. Caroline.....do not rely on an acupuncturist to treat potential thyroid disease. You need to see a doctor and have some blood work done because thyroid disease can be serious if not treated properly. You can use the acupuncture to enhance treatment of thyroid problems BUT you cannot cure or stop a thyroid problem with acupuncture alone. You may need to...
  15. I'm sorry you are feeling so bad and hope things get better really soon. I agree with Salax, though, on the Applegate hot dogs. In fact, I had one last night for dinner on a Udi's roll and have never reacted to them and I am about as sensitive a Celiac as they come. I take great care to not be glutened and it's a rare occasion when I am so if there were...
  16. I would think that if you were glutened 3 weeks ago but have no other health issues or problems with your Gi tract, then this would not be normal. This is usual when you are first diagnosed and go gluten-free as it takes awhile to heal but 3 weeks of problems like you are having sounds like something else may be going on. I am not sure if acupuncture would...
  17. You cannot have a Celiac reaction by just walking down the bread aisle, unless of course there was a bag explosion and there is flour in the air. Same with feed....if you are pouring or handling it and it's dusty and you inhale some of that dust, it will reach the gut and can cause a reaction. I think that the above 2 scenarios are no brainers and common...
  18. Leave it to a teenager to see what most adults don't seem to understand.....that eating gluten-free is not different just because the brownies don't have wheat flour in them. That's the only part of a brownie that isn't gluten-free. I think sometimes adults make it harder on kids because they try to explain too much. There really shouldn't have been any...
  19. Benadryl will not stop an anaphylactic reaction? I always was under the impression that it would. Ya learn something new everyday! I don't suffer from that so I guess I didn't have that right. Thanks for that information! I just checked the Benadryl site and learned another piece of information I wasn't aware of. They have been discontinued....
  20. Benadryl childrens chewables are gluten free. I use them and am very sensitive and have never had a problem with them. Benadryl is the best antihistamine for an aniphylactic reaction....it's what most hospitals use.
  21. Ok...now it's my chance to respectfully disagree! Not all smokers die young. Many people who smoke live well into their 70's and 80's, in fact, cancer and alzheimer rates are higher today and there are fewer smokers. Many people who have gluten problems also live a long time. My family are loaded with them and both sides live well into their late ...
  22. The fight between cake donuts and raised donuts is as heated as that between the Boston Red Sox and the NY Yankees! DD's makes both types. I think around here in Boston, it's a pretty even split on cake and raised. I never really liked donuts after the age of 15 because, funny enough, I felt horrible after eating them. I don't miss donuts at all but...
  23. You make very valid points here. Cromolyn is used in eye drops also for allergy related eye problems to stabilize mast cells and I personally use Quercitin for my seasonal allergies. I have only been taking it for about 2 months but my reactions are less intense and they do not last as long. I never get sinus infections either. I can only assume it is...
  24. Yup....it takes awhile to get used to that space being filled again and chewing on that side!
  25. These are just scare tactics put out by people who think that everything is contaminated. They fear food. If these grains were contaminated, then millions of Celiacs who eat them would not heal and gain their health back. It is always a smart thing to make sure that the grains you do buy come from a reputable and good gluten-free source but you can eat...
