  1. I haven't been able to find much on early symptoms of DH, but I can completely relate. I got glutened at a restaurant three weeks ago. It took me seven days to recover (thankfully it wasn't longer), but what I did notice was an extremely itchy forearm that I was unconsciously scratching all the time. No rash. Just an insane itch. I tried remedies for...
  2. My husband's in the "obese" category and he's gluten free (12 years now). It is hard, because I prepare most of the food that we eat and I cook healthy meals. Portion control is critical and he doesn't have a clue! Plus, he is a major couch potato (I'm the opposite in terms of exercise and weight). I hear you about the diabetes. My Dad and sister...
  3. What's on that pasta? Butter? Spaghetti Sauce? Alfredo sauce? Olive oil? Besides, possible cross contamination, you could be having problems (intolerances) with: Dairy/Milk Tomatoes Garlic Mushrooms Can't help you about the pain, especially since it affects your intestinal tract. Maybe you need more time to heal. Going for a marathon is a...
  4. What a relief! I hope all goes well!
  5. I can relate. It could very well be your gallbladder (or lack of). Many people have problems years after surgery digesting fatty foods (e.g. cousins and aunts/uncles). I'm pretty fortunate, except that I'm still getting my annual "gallbladder attacks" (nausea, vomiting, fainting, abdominal pain, etc.) which stem from very fatty foods. I think it...
  6. Sounds like you are doing your best to have a healthy child. I'd just focus on the joy of being pregnant and keeping a gluten free house! You will both need all your energy when your baby comes. Your strategy of introducing these "better" wheat varieties may not prevent your baby from developing celiac disease. It's runs strongly in families, so there...
  7. It can take a few months to a couple of years to heal. Be patient! I had a little trouble in the beginning with coffee, but I recall just skipping one day! Instead, I just limited it to one savory cup. In a few weeks, I was back to my two to three cups a day.
  8. It sounds like you are doing a great job! But, you're wrong about feeling better fast. It took me about 7 weeks to resolve my intestinal issues. I was asymptomatic prior to my blood test, but developed some intestinal problems prior to my endoscopy resulting from eating a loaf of bread a day (my results showed moderate to severe damage). Anyway, others...
  9. Sounds yummy! When the temperatures drop, I'll bake them. Baked a blueberry pear cobbler tonight in my Nesco roaster oven out on the back patio. Yum! Not efficient for muffins though! But, it sure kept my house cooler!
  10. Antibiotics for your acne? Has anyone thought about long term side effects of the drugs you were prescribed?
  11. Hope you feel better soon!
  12. I've been small my whole life until I got pregnant at 40. Even though I only gained 26 pounds during pregnancy, I never lost the last 10 pounds. I assume it's because 1) I breastfed forever and 2) I started perimenopause at age 41 (fat cells contain estrogen!). Since then, my weight hasn't changed and I confess I still eat like a pig! On the other hand...
  13. (Conversation in Doctor's office) GP (or PCP), "I see you're here for a follow-up visit after your hospital stay." I say, "Before we get into that, I have this sheet of items that I should be tested on. I belong to this Celiac forum. One of the bloggers is a Pediatrician and has Celiac Disease. She subscribes to a doctor's website that sends her...
  14. I agree with Gemini (and the others)! Go gluten free and keep a food diary to help identify food intolerances. When I had "IBS" (it's just a dumping diagnosis), I found out that my intestinal symptoms went away when I identified my food intolerances and recovered from being on antibiotics for two years! It was at that time that I was diagnosed with Hashi...
  15. Oh, sweet potatoes! I forgot. Good catch! I season with dill, pepper and salt. Can't do garlic. Looking forward to making these at the end of October when this heat wave will end! Ha! Maybe, I should just put the pan out on the sidewalk....
  16. Of course you are welcome! There are plenty of folks on this forum who are gluten intolerant. I didn't have any intestinal symptoms when I was diagnosed. Just went in for a routine colonoscopy and the doc noted that I was anemic (low iron stores) and had Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. He asked if I had stomach issues but I told him only when I ate foods...
  17. Didn't your doctor advise taking probiotics after completing your triple cocktail mix of antibiotics? He should have done that! Starting take some probiotics for the next month. You just wiped out both good and bad bacteria leaving your intestinal wall open for fungus. Replenish with some good bacteria to help establish good intestinal flora. There...
  18. You have your answer! Give up the milk for a while. Sounds more like a milk allergy (sinus congestion), but can be lactose at the same time! It could be other foods too, but start with most obvious -- milk.
  19. It took me about seven weeks to resolve digestive issues that only developed between my blood test and biopsy. But, I already knew about my food allergies and intolerances. Everyone is different -- it takes lots of time to heal. Have you identified other possible intolerances? Typically, because of intestinal damage, you temporarily can't digest milk...
  20. I think it's based on how much you can tolerate. I have a milk allergy (for years). Depending on the season (pollen counts are low), I can have a little butter, even in baked goods (small amount dispersed throughout). But I can't eat cheese or drink milk. There's a lot less milk protein in butter and I'm assuming it's the same for lactose. You must...
  21. Now, cut those beets into chunks, along with chunks of carrot and red potatoes, put them on a baking sheet, drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with herbs. Roast for about 40 minutes or until tender. Yum! By the way, Costco has fresh pre-cooked beets now. No mess! I haven't tried them yet but my GF Aunt has and she liked them (but she's a beet nut...
  22. If they are boils (large and they fill with pus like a giant pimple) and not blisters/hives, you need to get to a doctor for antibiotics. It sounds like a staff infection. It's a plague for cyclists and their little black bike shorts. One cut/rub from a seam and you are toast! Home remedies don't always work and there is a risk of the infection entering...
  23. You have a endo and colonoscopy scheduled in a month, right? Other than some possible over-the-counter gas medication, I don't know what can help besides avoiding foods that create gas (e.g. beans). After your biopsy and once you are on a gluten-free diet, you should hopefully feel some relief in a few weeks. It may take months to years for complete healing...
  24. It's probably related to the challenge. If you are reacting to gluten (inflammation), and you are getting exposed to allergy triggers (e.g. pollen, weeds, dogs, cats) you are creating more inflammation. You're going to feel worst. Anyway, hopefully, someone else with allergies and who has completed a challenge will reply!
  25. I don't have to deal with a 504 plan as my daughter hasn't been diagnosed. But, I can comment on fun and good things to eat that I pack for my daughter and it's typically gluten free. She's in the 7th grade (two weeks so far) and there are no lockers. Therefore, she must haul her lunch, water bottle and snack around. The teachers highly recommended...
