  1. Also Bailey's...and every other one I know of. richard
  2. Everything I've read or seen says that the flu shot is perfectly fine for people with celiac. All celiac experts (Drs. Green, Fasano, Rudert and so one) I know of agree on this. They also agree that people with celiac are NOT in the high-risk group unless they have other problems that would put them there. When there was a shortage a couple of years ago,...
  3. If your son is sick from the fries it's from the CC of eating at a fast-food place, not from the oil. The oil has tested out gluten-free. Many people with celiac still eat the fries. richard
  4. Actually, it is starting to look like the wheat is disappearing from more of those glaze packets. richard
  5. Hair color is not made to be absorbed through your skin. If you were absorbing it through your skin, you'd probably get pretty sick, and not just from gluten. You can't absorb just ANYTHING through your skin. We have a highly resistant and pretty amazing skin barrier to keep that from happpening, otherwise we'd be absorbing everything we come in contact...
  6. Most commercial glaze packets have wheat, tho not all. Read the ingredients. richard
  7. I've never found a candy cane that dusts with flour. In fact, the whole thing about lines and packaging being dusted with wheat flour is pretty much a celiac urban myth. Cornstarch and cellulose are used most often. Candy canes almost without exception are gluten-free. richard

    ARCHIVED Red Lobster

Sweetfudg, I do seafood so many ways. The snow crab legs I can get at the store I just heat up by steaming and eat them with melted butter, lemon and salt. Same with blue crabs, which here are limited to mid-summer to late fall. Shrimp can be steamed, BBQed, boiled and even fried (I use Zatarain's fish fry). And you can use all sorts of sauces. I usually...
  9. Koolaid is gluten-free. Also, in the U.S. any maltodextrin made from wheat must clearly say so. If it doesn't day wheat, it's gluten-free. richard
  10. You will get more energy as time goes on but you really need to eat more stuff with protein. Many folks who have celiac and never ever gained weight no matter what they ate will start gaining after going gluten-free. You weren't absorbing things -- good and bad -- and now you are. You absolutely MUST change your eating habits, because not only will your weight...
  11. Generally speaking, DH calms down during the winter. I know I took dapsone a whole lot less often in the winter. Are you sure it's DH and not some other skin condition? richard

    ARCHIVED Red Lobster

The word on RL has always been to avoid all the seasonings, which is why I don't go there. Plain fish and seafood (well, maybe crab legs with butter)?? I can make it a heck of a lot better at home and a lot cheaper. Or I go to a non-chain. But, if you do go, you need to test how cooperative they are. I've heard some places treat you great and others don...
  13. Turkey salad -- just like chicken salad, only with turkey. richard
  14. It likely has nothing to do with celiac. I'd see a doctor.
  15. Touching gluten certainly isn't a problem for me as long as I wash and don't put it in my mouth. And I had DH. richard

    ARCHIVED Turkey

It's gluten-free. It's late, but one more reminder to all, if a turkey label doesn't list wheat, rye or barley, it's gluten-free. No need to worry. It's safe. Really. richard
  17. The only bread I like at all is the ciabatta recipe in 125 Best Gluten-Free Recipes. Believe me, the book is worth the price for this one recipe. It smells like bread when baking and holds together. richard
  18. First, everything I've read says that the gluten protein/molecule is in fact MUCH too large to be absorbed through the skin. Even if it were to get through the first layer, it simply could not get through the skin barrier. Medications that are applied through the skin have special carriers designed to take them through the barrier, and some medication simply...
  19. "We don't eat ham very often because I can never figure out what to serve with it. Ideas?" Potato salad is great. Green beans. Cole slaw. Sweet potatos. Salad. Anything that's gluten-free really. One of the things I've learned about being gluten-free is to eat whatever whenever, as long as it's gluten-free. Got some leftover chicken or tuna salad and...
  20. Ditto on the Franks. Easy and the best. richard
  21. I had DH for 20 years and it doesn't sound like my DH. DH presentation differs, so of course I can't diagnose over the web. richard
  22. Hams are almost without exception gluten-free as long as they aren't pre-glazed, like the Honeybaked. If there is wheat in the glaze, both the FDA and USDA REQUIRE that it be listed. Just like with turkey, all you need to do is look at the ingredients. richard
  23. Sorry for the hostility but when you question "they" in this case, you're being hostile to the top celiac experts in the world -- the people who are responsible for what we DO know about celiac and DH. It's people like Dr. Green and Fasano who have researched and developed the information we're talking about, not your family physician who screwed up your...
  24. "You are absolutely correct--that is what they look for. However, I don't trust "them" any further than I can throw the bathtub; I don't think "they" know what the heck they are doing. So for all we know, gluten itself might be present in our skin, but "they" have never bothered to look. There's an awful lot of things "they" have never bothered to look for...
  25. The sticker glue is definitely gluten-free. richard
