Ooh! Ooh! I can get on topic, too!

I posted in another forum about bizarro pain I've been having. Does anyone else hurt a lot when someone scratches your back, gives you a massage, or you scratch your back? Or when you slide out of bed in the morning and your calves rub against the edge of the mattress? It's an intense soreness, like you just hit something really hard, only all of this is with avergage pressure. I've had it a few years, I never realized it wasn't normal

Since we're in the land of magical relevations, I figured this might be a more helpful place to ask advice

Tika is autistic, so she's mostly interested in hunting for lizards and staring intently at people to get what she wants...

Um, off topic? I am so consistently off topic that I"m sure to be voted off the cult farm....

I can't help but be off topic today, lol. I had a dog named Teaka! We spelled it differently obviously. Neat name! :D

Haven't really had that kind of pain, but have had the kind where it feels like a really horrible sun burn when the skin is just lightly touched or even when clothing brushes against it...there's never any redness or rash or any other outward sign of anything amiss...the spots tend to differ from time to time.

I fell about a month ago and the bruising is gone, but my leg still hurts like it is bruised even with very light pressure...is that close to the pain you are feeling?

I had a massage on Saturday and thought I was going to die. Its a deep tissue massage and I always have her use heavy pressure and it's usually not a problem, but almost every spot she touched...even with lighter pressure on my feet hurt like crazy.

Rachel-

thanks for the support- perhaps we should be the cheerleaders on our island either that or we could hire Mr Clark to stop by once a weekend to come give us all motivational talks!!

Miamia

Andrea-

not that I dont support your role as mayor but I feel you would be very well suited in a motherly role.

I think you should be the motherly mayor - or something to that extent - we can fool with the official title.

Miamia

Miamia,

You can only be cheerleader if it doesn't take away from chef duties. :D You were one of our chefs weren't you...or is my memory failing me. Did you guys know that msg has been linked with autism? That's in Excitotoxins...from our discussion about 70-80 pages ago. :P

Motherly mayor....we can go with that. :P

Rachel- I don't know if you ever said what your OMG moment was yesterday, maybe I missed it?

I feel like I am missing other things, I apologize if I left anything out.

Yes, I must have missed it too, unless it was the follow-up on the C.Diff thing...Rachel? :D

That sounds pretty close. I can't tolerate anything more than a gentle backrub. Even a light massage on my shoulders HURTS LIKE HELL!! Not just during it, which could be tight muscles, but for a good 2-3 minutes after the touching ceases.

Interesting you should say scratching your back. My husband (trying to be nice) will come up behind me in the kitchen or something and rub my shoulders/scratch my back. These are things he loves, but I can't stand it--it hurts, and I just figured I'm just more sensitive.

Guess what? My son, daughter-in-law and my baby grandbaby Ana, are flying in tonight at midnight... can't wait to hold Ana again... they will be here for good now, they moved back home to sunny Florida!!

Celia--you must be over the moon!! Will they be living close by in Florida? I hope someday to have grandchildren--my sons don't seem to be in any sort of hurry, though :D

I just realized I made up a new word there - relevations. Kind of like revelations, only spelled wrong. Whoops

I've been doing that a lot. Like, I'll intend to write "the dog chased the cat out of the house" and I'll end up writing "the dog chased the cat out of the credit card"

Man, this brainfog is so deep that no amount of red bull will save me now

Wow, fortunately for me it doesn't happen very often, but I can think of two other times recently where I was nearly in tears and in one case felt kind of nauseated. Did you notice it happening when you were gluten-free? I'm wondering if maybe it will get better once you're off the challenge.

my gosh, your husband vacuuming.....how fantastic...be sure and post that on the why we don't need men thread...... Around here I don't look forward so much to the sound of the pitter-patter of little feet, but the sound of a man doing things for me (sawing limbs off trees, mowing the lawn, opening jars  )

Celia and I must be doubly blessed. My hubby works hard all day and comes home and helps with whatever needs to be done. I just told him last night that I only eat 2 meals a day during the week but since he's home on the weekend I eat 3 because he takes such good care of me. He's always asking what I want for breakfast and if I don't know or don't feel like it, he figures something out. He also does laundry and vacuums on the weekends as well as doing the dishes that don't go in the dishwasher. And he let's me have most of the computer time so I can keep up with Rachelville. :P

Not to say the Celia and I are the only ones double blessed.....just no one else has written about it. :)

Ms Penguin, Just kind of goes with the territory! I managed to gluten myself (CC) right before we went away --a week and a half ago--and I'm still doing stupid things! Yesterday, I took a load of clothes out of the dryer, folded them and turned the drier back on--completely empty. A while later, I thought--what's that noise? It was the dryer running

When I am reacting to foods (not just wheat, but dairy and processed packaged foods/lots of grains does it for me too) and I amass a lot of swelling (rapid weight gain) I have this type of pain. It's like it hurts to be touched or to wear clothes, to even lay down because the weight of my body on myself hurts, if that makes sense?

It goes away for me when I lose the massive swelling and my body weight normalizes, it takes a while and it only goes down if I take out all the offending foods.

I just realized I made up a new word there - relevations. Kind of like revelations, only spelled wrong. Whoops

I do that all the time, brain fog or nor brain fog. I think I am a dyslexic typer, always inverting letters.

I frankly prefer "relevations" to revelations. Here in the land of Rachelville, we make all the rules, and we have our own words and language, relevations must go at the top of the list

Celia,

That is so exciting! You will have so much fun with your grandbaby......will we still see you on here? I know we will and I'm happy for you. :D

Chelsea,

It sounds like your gluten challenge could be the culprit. You still have a month left? I meant to comment on the weight watchers pages ago but forgot. I would think the weight wouldn't be too hard to lose once you are back off gluten. I don't know if you've been eating products with a lot of refined sugar, but going off of refined sugar and only eating the sugar that's no so refined will help with weight loss. You still need to watch all sugar intake, it's just the refined stuff that so bad as far as weight.

I don't think it's the gluten challenge, I've had this going on for years, and being gluten-free did nothing for it. It may have been worse, actually.

I'm thinking the weight won't be too hard to lose when I'm off gluten, especially if I start WW at the same time. Double whammy of eating retraining :)

That's what friends are for, Susan! I knew Lynne would want to know cuz you two are buds ;) I'm sure this is another difficult day for the family--I'm thinking about you all :)

I'm wondering about your OMG moment too Rachel. :)

Relevations, great word, what does it mean? I'm thinking: relev as in important and elevations as in higher places, so relevations is the sharing of an important journey to the uplifted and inspirational community of Rachelville. :) Anyone else?

Celia, how wonderful that you will be able to hold that grandchild more often. I am so happy for you.

Off all topics, even the off-topic ones -

I just got off the phone with our tech guy for our prospect managment software that's showing me how to use this labrynth of a system that's supposed to make my life easier. He's maybe 30, and works with all of the councils nationwide.

Should I be offended he called me kiddo?:rolleyes::P

C'mon guys, I know I'm young, but sheesh!

Better than "hun" I guess....

I'm alot older than you and get called "kiddo" all the time...I get called "hun" too. People call me all kinds of things...as long as they are endearing it doesnt bother me one bit.

Oh...one of my co-workers calls me B****....thats just what she calls me and she says it affectionately so it doesnt offend me in the least. :)

No coincidence. Recent revisions to gluten challenge guidelines call for the daily consumption of at least 10g of gluten (about the amount in 4-6 slices of wheat bread) for a minimum of 3 weeks. If possible, I would extend that two weeks to ensure valid testing.
    • SilkieFairy
Thank you both for the replies. I decided to bring back gluten so I can do the blood test. Today is Day #2 of the Challenge. Yesterday I had about 3 slices of whole wheat bread and I woke up with urgent diarrhea this morning. It was orange, sandy and had the distinctive smell that I did not have when I was briefly gluten free. I don't know if it's a coincidence, but the brain fog is back and I feel very tired.

@Jane02, I hear you about the kale and collard greens.  I don't do dairy and must eat green leafies, too, to get sufficient calcium.  I must be very careful because some calcium supplements are made from ground up crustacean shells.  When I was deficient in Vitamin D, I took high doses of Vitamin D to correct the deficiency quickly.  This is safe and nontoxic.  Vitamin D level should be above 70 nmol/L.  Lifeguards and indigenous Pacific Islanders typically have levels between 80-100 nmol/L.   Levels lower than this are based on amount needed to prevent disease like rickets and osteomalacia. We need more thiamine when we're physically ill, emotionally and mentally stressed, and if we exercise like an athlete or laborer.  We need more thiamine if we eat a diet high in simple carbohydrates.  For every 500 kcal of carbohydrates, we need 500-1000 mg more of thiamine to process the carbs into energy.  If there's insufficient thiamine the carbs get stored as fat.  Again, recommended levels set for thiamine are based on minimum amounts needed to prevent disease.  This is often not adequate for optimum health, nor sufficient for people with absorption problems such as Celiac disease.  Gluten free processed foods are not enriched with vitamins like their gluten containing counterparts.  Adding a B Complex and additional thiamine improves health for Celiacs.  Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  Thiamine helps the mitochondria in cells to function.  Thiamine interacts with each of the other B vitamins.  They are all water soluble and easily excreted if not needed. Interesting Reading: Clinical trial: B vitamins improve health in patients with coeliac disease living on a gluten-free diet https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19154566/ Safety and effectiveness of vitamin D mega-dose: A systematic review https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34857184/ High dose dietary vitamin D allocates surplus calories to muscle and growth instead of fat via modulation of myostatin and leptin signaling https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38766160/ Safety of High-Dose Vitamin D Supplementation: Secondary Analysis of a Randomized Controlled Trial https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31746327/ Vitamins and Celiac Disease: Beyond Vitamin D https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11857425/ Investigating the therapeutic potential of tryptophan and vitamin A in modulating immune responses in celiac disease: an experimental study https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40178602/ Investigating the Impact of Vitamin A and Amino Acids on Immune Responses in Celiac Disease Patients https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10814138/

Thank you so much @knitty kitty for this insightful information! I would have never considered fractionated coconut oil to be a potential source of GI upset. I will consider all the info you shared. Very interesting about the Thiamine deficiency.  I've tracked daily averages of my intake in a nutrition software. The only nutrient I can't consistently meet from my diet is vitamin D. Calcium is a hit and miss as I rely on vegetables, dark leafy greens as a major source, for my calcium intake. I'm able to meet it when I either eat or juice a bundle of kale or collard greens daily haha. My thiamine intake is roughly 120% of my needs, although I do recognize that I may not be absorbing all of these nutrients consistently with intermittent unintentional exposures to gluten.  My vitamin A intake is roughly 900% (~6400 mcg/d) of my needs as I eat a lot of sweet potato, although since it's plant-derived vitamin A (beta-carotene) apparently it's not likely to cause toxicity.  Thanks again!
    • knitty kitty
Hello, @Jane02,  I take Naturewise D 3.  It contains olive oil.   Some Vitamin D supplements, like D Drops, are made with fractionated coconut oil which can cause digestive upsets.  Fractionated coconut oil is not the same as coconut oil used for cooking.  Fractionated coconut oil has been treated for longer shelf life, so it won't go bad in the jar, and thus may be irritating to the digestive system. I avoid supplements made with soy because many people with Celiac Disease also react to soy.  Mixed tocopherols, an ingredient in Thornes Vitamin D, may be sourced from soy oil.  Kirkland's has soy on its ingredient list. I avoid things that might contain or be exposed to crustaceans, like Metagenics says on its label.  I have a crustacean/shellfish/fish allergy.  I like Life Extension Bioactive Complete B Complex.  I take additional Thiamine B 1 in the form Benfotiamine which helps the intestines heal, Life Extension MegaBenfotiamine. Thiamine is needed to activate Vitamin D.   Low thiamine can make one feel like they are getting glutened after a meal containing lots of simple carbohydrates like white rice, or processed gluten free foods like cookies and pasta.   It's rare to have a single vitamin deficiency.  The water soluble B Complex vitamins should be supplemented together with additional Thiamine in the form Benfotiamine and Thiamine TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) to correct subclinical deficiencies that don't show up on blood tests.  These are subclinical deficiencies within organs and tissues.  Blood is a transportation system.  The body will deplete tissues and organs in order to keep a supply of thiamine in the bloodstream going to the brain and heart.   If you're low in Vitamin D, you may well be low in other fat soluble vitamins like Vitamin A and Vitamin K. Have you seen a dietician?
