Does anyone have any ideas for make-ahead hors d'ouevres?

I'm planning on crudites with hummus and dips.

Thanks!

Crustless quiche squares

Hillshire Farms Mini links - grape jelly and BBQ Sauce - heated in chaffing dish

Marinated shrimp

Grilled pork tenderloin - served with honey mustard

Wheel of Brie, topped with brown sugar and sliced almonds - lighly broiled and served with

Gluten free ginger snaps with brie - yummmmm

Glutino Crackers.

Have you tried them? I saw them for the first time in a store recently where I was buying other Glutino products. I was tempted, but for the moment, at least, resisted. I have never found a Glutino product that I didn't like, but often the price is a stopper. Great pretzels, but I already have a mortgage!

The crackers are good, but you need some cheese that "speaks" to overcome the blah. I keep a box or two in my freezer for guests.

Funny about personal taste

I really liked the Glutino crackers--I thought they were flaky and kind of buttery-tasting. :P

Wow! Thanks for the great ideas!

Patti, I never liked bread or crackers before gluten free. Thought it all was "blah". (ain't I the lucky one ;) )

Yeah--that's probably why----they're good, but pretty standard as crackers go. The surprising thing to me was that they didn't taste "gluten-free". :) I think I expected them to be dry and hard.

I absolutely love rumaki. (Bacon-wrapped chestnuts) You can use gluten-free soy for the marinade.

Warm spinach and artichoke dip

Hickory Farms (sausage, cheese, dips)

Cold shrimp with cocktail sauce

(and I love the Glutino crackers - they are worth trying, Peter)

Everyone has great suggestions...I'm getting hungry!!!

How about:

Fruit dip made with strawberry cream cheese, marshmallow fluff and kool whip

buffalo chicken dip with celery, fritos, and corn tostitos

(dip reheats well in microwave if you prep ahead)

Chocolate covered potato chips (ruffle variety works best) and glutino pretzels -- add sprinkles over the chocolate if you want them to look festive.

Have you ever tried dates stuffed with chevre cheese, wrapped in bacon and baked in the oven? Oh my!

Some ideas:

**deviled eggs

**jalapeno poppers (I make mine without breading. Scoop seeds out of halved jalapenos, mix with cream cheese and shredded cheese. Put cheese mix back into jalapeno halves, wrap with bacon. They are HOT but soooooo tasty. People prefer these over the breaded ones!)

**buffalo wings (Cook chicken tenders/wings/drummettes, coat with a mix of hot sauce and butter. Serve with celery and dip.)

**homemade chocolate covered cherries

I also am a fan of the Glutino crackers. They're great topped with tuna for an emergency lunch.

Wow, all these ideas are making me hungry! I think chocolate covered anything is great! Maybe set out a fondue bowl or small crockpot filled w/ chocolate and various things to dip in it :) Although I suppose this would be more like a dessert idea...but I'd eat it!

Does anyone know if Little Smokies are gluten free?

I'm definitely going to try this idea. Yum.

I thought chocolate covered potato chips were gross --- until I tried them. The sweet and salty combo is delish --- think chocolate covered pretzels, but slightly different. ;)

Last night I took some vanilla wafers ("Cooking Free" recipe) out of the freezer and put PB between them. Then I melted choc chips to cover the sandwiches, chilled them to harden the chocolate. I didn't get to try them but my dd said they were really good several times. I have to make more soon.

These would be gluten-free/df/egg free.

One of my all time favorites at the holidays are the beef and cream cheese logs that get sliced up and put on a cracker. I don't know what they're called, but if you've had them you know what I'm talking about! It's dried beef laid out in a big rectangle and then you "frost" the beef with cream cheese, line up green olives at one end, then roll it all up and then slice it and serve it on crackers. Since we're a gluten-free household (my son is the Celiac, not me), I didn't plan on eating that any time soon (I don't really care for the Glutino crackers too much.). Then I went to a holiday party that was a cooking class and we made Olive Surprises. They are so yummy! You take a large green olive and smoosh cream cheese around it to make a ball that completely covers the olive. Then roll the balls in walnuts that have been run through the food processor. Oh my gosh! If you like that sort of thing these are amazing! :D Yum! Yum! Yum!

Also, I've been eating cheese slices on Crunchmaster crackers (from Sam's Club) for lunch a lot. The crackers are very crunchy and salty enough to satisfy a salt craving. They'd make an excellent holiday tray. You could also make a honey mustard to dip them in.

Chex Mix is always good with me. We use Rice Chex, Corn Crunch Ems, Gorilla Munch, Glutino pretzels, honey nut "O" type cereal (can't remember the brand, not Perky Os though) and nuts.

Fruit and a fruit dip are always wonderful.

Also from the cooking class...cute little mini corn bread muffins (using the mini muffin tins) with a slice/chunk of hotdog dropped into the center before baking. Make it look really cool by drizzling ketchup and mustard in swirls on the platter before putting the "corn dogs" on top. You can make them ahead of time and then warm them up at party time.

Lastly...a slice of granny smith apple and a slice of brie cheese wrapped in salami. Sounded awful to me, but again, one of my favs!

OK, I want to throw a party now!!!

The other day I made bacon wrapped dates. My husband is a sucker for dates and I'm a sucker for bacon. It was wonderful!!! Pre non-dairy days I used to stuff them with Havarti. But chevre sounds like it would be really good. I'll have to try that next. Thanks for the suggestion!

Every time I taste the pretzels I think they taste buttery! They are so delicious!! I'm on a missions now to find the crackers. I haven't found a cracker yet that I like.

Before I was diagnosed I loved eating salmon and cream cheese on crackers and 'm missed it since making the gluten free switch.

Thanks for the clarification on the scope. This is what confused me, "gastro doc said from the biopsy there was mild atrophied villi but I know that could be from where the sample was taken and they could be gone not far away." I interpreted that to mean when the scope was done they didn't do a thorough job of checking the area that would be affected by celiac disease and were looking for other things.
    • Tedro
I already had a scope done and he said there were damaged villi. This follow up is to go over the bloodwork I already know the results to and the gastric emptying study I had done.  I won't say the burgers were not greasy but not bad. It even happens with chicken breast or tenderloin in the air fryer and that's not very fatty at all.

You might be having trouble digesting meat because of the damage to your villi. But what about gallbladder problems? Were those burgers, even the turkey ones, greasy? The odd thing is the "peeing like a racehorse" after consumption. You say you have follow up GI appointment coming up. Please be aware if the GI doc wants to do an upper GI to specifically check for villous atrophy of the small bowel, the hallmark of celiac disease, going on a gluten free diet already may invalidate the results as it allows for healing to occur.
    • Tedro
Had noticeable issues for 7 months including 3 trips to the ER for extreme discomfort. Every doc just said I had gastritis, take pepcid. This never changed a thing. Finally talked a doc into a referral to a gastroenterologist who I had to convince to do a scope and bloodwork to test for celiac among other things. It's like nobody believed me when I said I was sick. I got results back saying positive for an autoimmune disease but not which one. At that point I started a gluten-free diet based upon my own findings. The following week I check my insurance site and there's a message that I tested positive for celiacs. Never got a phone call. This was 5 weeks ago. The message said they suggest I maintain my follow up appointment which is may 19. No instructions on what to do, avoid, anything.  I am smart enough to figure this out thankfully.  So now 5 weeks into it I definitely feel an improvement. Been only eating things that say certified gluten free on the packaging.  I was eating a breakfast protein kind bar in the morning but stopped because they aren't certified gluten-free. Also it seemed I would have hard upper gi grumbles when I ate them and I just figured maybe the oats were hard to digest. one of my symptoms was a hard gi grumble that lasted for hours after eating gluten. Eggs don't seem to bother me but I only have 1 or 2. Dairy doesn't seem to bother me. 2 sundays ago I had 2 burgers with no bun. 2 patties on the grill. slice of prepackaged provolone. Half way through the second burger it hit me and I felt horrible. 2 hrs later I am peeing every half hour and up half the night. Thought maybe the small amount of seasoning I used that was gluten-free got cross contamination. This past saturday made a steak. Real butter in a clean pan and throw the steak on. 2 hrs after eating it same thing. Hard grumbles, peeing every half hour for several hours, and plain exhausted. around 6pm yesterday....gluten-free turkey burger in the air fryer. 2 hrs later peeing like a racehorse, hard grumbles in my upper gi. I'm still feeling the effects today. I tried all day to find an allergist but the soonest appointment is in August. I have an appointment with a nutritionist the first week of june.  Thinking back the worst reactions I've had  before diagnosis were general tsos which could have been breading or animal protein I guess. A fried fish sandwich. again could be Bread or protein. 2 burgers while on vacation this past winter. Also since diagnosis I made a porkchop with green beans and sweet potatoes and got the same sick which to me makes me think I'm having more of a reaction to meat or its protein than I am to gluten. gastro doc said from the biopsy there was mild atrophied villi but I know that could be from where the sample was taken and they could be gone not far away.  I'm very frustrated from going gluten free 5 weeks ago and having similar reactions to what should be clean gluten-free food like steak or turkey. I know it takes a long time to heal. I know I have celiacs from the blood work. I just wonder if there is something else going on this whole time. Has anyone had any similar experiences or have any insight? I am looking forward to my gastro appointment next week and have a list of comments and questions but i'm not getting my hopes up. I am by myself and am really struggling with all of this so I'm glad I found this community. I looked through a lot of posts and haven't really seen anything similar. Thank you all in advance.

You may want to go to a dermatologist to see if it might instead be dermatitis herpetiformis, which is the skin version of celiac disease. Here are some articles on Rosacea and CD:
