Is There An Affordable Protein Powder, That Is Free From Gluten, Msg, Aspartate, Artifical Flavor/sweetners?

I heard I should keep away from aspartate and I heard it is toxic in the same way gluten is. After all aspartame is 40% aspartate. I have yet to find an affordable protein powder, that doesnt have something bad in it. I need to bulk back up, I have almost lost hope. Can anyone help me? I have lost muscle and I'd really like to bulk up.

I use NOW Foods 100% Whey Isolate.

I order online for like $73/ 10lb bag

It basically has no taste, but I don't have any problems like I have with other protein powders.

I use this one, only stevia as a sweetener. The ingredients are towards the bottom of the page. I think it tastes really good!

I found some good whey powder from whole foods, but I need a bigger container. I need something that'll last atleast a month or two. I'd like get a 10lb container of whey, but all the whey I've seen that doesnt have anything bad in it, doesn't come in big containers. Whey at GNC had like 50 ingredients! I mean come one how much stuff do you need in protein powder? There is no need for dyes and spenda is PROTEIN POWDER.

I use Natural Essentials from Iron-tek. Certified gluten free and sweetened with fructose, nothing artificial and great taste. I bought a small container of 'Vanilla cake' from Whole foods for about $20, then found the 5lbs container online for a little over $30.

This is the protein I use...pea protein. It seems to do well. Sweetened *not very sweet which is great for me* with stevia.

I have lost muscle and weight too from being on the glutenfree diet. I have slowly put on a little muscle with workng out. I take purefit protein bars as far as I know the only protein bar that is glutenfree and tastes good enough. I also found some chocolate/vanilla central market brand protein powder at HEB grocery store or if u have a Central Market near you look for it. I think it is relatively new.

Ill let u know how it tastes.

I have been using Gold Standard... I wasn't sure of some indredients.. so I called the company.. they said some products had gluten in them... such as cookies and cream protein powder. I am using rockyroad .. she said that had no gluten. I double checked and made sure she knew there was a difference between wheat and gluten and she said she was sure there was no gluten in them.

I've been using Designer Whey for ages, 'cause it's the only brand I trust to contain what it's label says and have gained/maintained a lot of muscle using it during lower calorie phases. The flavored ones use sucralose as a sweetener, but their "natural" flavor doesn't use any sweeteners or have any other weird ingredients as far as I remember. I'm actually going to switch to natural from the chocolate I've been taking. Downside is, the natural flavor doesn't taste that great, but I guess that's why they call it natural. The best deal I've found on all sports suppliments is DPSNutrition.com. Oh yeah, and all designer whey products are gluten free.

We also use Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey Gold Standard. We prefer the double rich chocolate flavour. It mixes up great even in just a shaker cup with water.

Hey there.

I use Nutribiotic Rice Protein. It comes in different flavors and only has 3 or 4 ingredients. The statement on their website says "Completely vegan. Contains no soy, milk, eggs, yeast, corn, wheat, sugars, or preservatives." The jar I got is 22 oz but it also comes in 3 lb.

I just contacted the manufacturer Body Fortress and got this reply:

Body Fortress Super Advanced Whey Protein Chocolate (product # 44320 bulk # 29648), Vanilla (product # 44315 bulk # 29641), Cookies and Cream (product # 18490 bulk # 29654) and Strawberry (product # 18495 Bulk # 29649) are gluten free.

I buy the 2lb canister at Walmart for about $15.

Please be aware of Designer Whey. Their products are mass produced and sold cheaply for a reason. The protein synthesis process they use ruins the protein so much, all your really left with is a high amount of sodium. I too used to drink DW and then did research online on how protein powders are created. Be aware that when a company sells something for real cheap ALL the time, there is a reason. Notice how the powder stays chunky, that's the cheapest protein out there on the market.

Being a gluten-free triathlete, I have used all the powders before and after I was diagnosed Celiac. Now the best protein powder I have taken comes from my holisitic health doctor. He doesn't make it, he buys it from the manufacturer. When I have the name I will post it here.

I was given one by a friend, called Thunder Chocolate Meal REplacement by forevergreen.

It is a big almost 3 lb canister, and I think it is around $60. makes 60 shakes.

It is whey and 24 Karat Chocolate with vitamins,enzymes, omega's, amino acids, minerals, probiotics.

It has honey crystals and 14.5 g protein

I recently began using Muscle Gauge Nutrition's whey isolate protein product. It isn't certified, and it doesn't say gluten free on the label. But, it was recommended on another thread here, and their web site (musclegauge.com) says all of their products are gluten free, down at the bottom of every page. You might find better pricing through muscleandstrength.com.

I previously used Optimum Nutrition's 100% Whey Gold Standard; Double Rich Chocolate was my favorite flavor. I contacted ON and they replied with the specific flavors and product lines which contain gluten... They said the products which don't have glutenous ingredients are produced on the same machines, but that they clean the machines between product changes.

So I decided to switch to MGN, because of the all-products-gluten-free claim that they make, and it has fewer ingredients, and whey isolate is the best form of whey protein that you can get... Also it might be a little cheaper (they're pretty close in price).

I've had no issues with the Muscle Gauge Nutrition product thus far. The Ice Cream Sandwich flavor is the only one I've tried at this point. It is good, but not a very strong flavor. I mix it with water and it tastes a bit watered down when I use the recommended 8 ounces to one scoop (70 grams, IIRC).

It's been hard for me -- I recently threw away TONS of "gluten-free" protein powder because it gave me a horrible reaction. However, I am wondering if it was the whey, too. So I'm also wondering if a rice protein powder might be better -- perhaps best to stay away from soy, whey. Not sure about hemp; I don't know much about it. Anyone?

With any processed foods, I do much, much, much better with those that have been certified gluten-free by GIG. I checked their web page and didn't see protein powder listed, but I may have missed it.

Has anyone here tried Garden of Life Raw Protein? It is labeled gluten-free, soy-free. It doesn't appear to be certified, but I'm wondering if it might be an option.

Ingredients:

If anyone who is super-sensitive has tried this with any success, please let me know.

I get casein protein from AllTheWhey.com. Their unflavored whey and casein proteins are gluten free. They don't have any other ingredients in them, they're just pure protein powder. The casein blends well, and I drink it with milk every day, and I've never had a reaction.

While I haven't tried it yet, I am intrigued by Alpha ENF (there is also Alpha PMX, which has less protein), which can be ordered online (just google Alpha Nutrition products, and that should get you to their site). I like the formulation, as it is designed to give a balance of all nutrients, not just protein. I have in the past used Biox Power Whey. Incredible flavours, and no "chalky" residue left in your mouth. Both products are gluten-free, however I personally have had a tough time with the Biox since being diagnosed with celiac (probably I'm reacting to something else in it).

The only protein I have been consuming in large volumes recently is hemp protein, unflavoured and cold-pressed. It retains all its natural goodness and is rich in essential healthy fats, fibre and is very filling. Taste is an issue, initially - but the more you eat, the better it tastes! (well that's what I have found anyway...). If you look at the nutritional profile its pretty interesting, basically its 'complete' so could sustain life on its own - now your not going to get that with a yucky processed whey protein. Finding decent hemp protein that is easy to eat can be a challenge, especially if like me you drink it mixed ONLY with plain water.

      Hi Charlie, You sound like you have been having a rough time of it. Coeliac disease can cause a multitude of skin, mouth and throat problems. Mouth ulcers and enamel defects are well known but other oral conditions are also more common in people with coeliac disease: burning tongue, inflamed and swollen tongue, difficulty swallowing, redness and crusting in the mouth corners, and dry mouth to name but some. The link below is for paediatric dentistry but it applies to adults too.  Have you had follow up for you coeliac disease to check that your anti-tTG2 antibodies levels have come down? Are you certain that you not being exposed to significant amounts of gluten? Are you taking a PPI for your Barrett's oesophagus? Signs of changes to the tongue can be caused by nutritional deficiencies, particularly iron, B12 and B9 (folate) deficiency. I would make sure to take a good quality multivitamin every day and make sure to take it with vitamin C containing food - orange juice, broccoli, cabbage etc.  Sebaceous hyperplasia is common in older men and I can't find a link to coeliac disease.   Russ.   Oral Manifestations in Pediatric Patients with Coeliac Disease – A Review Article

      Hi @Charlie1946 You are very welcome.   I agree wholeheartedly with @knitty kitty:  "I wish doctors would check for nutritional deficiencies and gastrointestinal issues before prescribing antidepressants." I had a type of tingling/sometimes pain in my cheek about 2 years after my diagnosis.  I noticed it after standing in cold wind, affecting  me after the event - for example, the evening after standing outside, I would feel either tingling or stabbing pain in my cheek.   I found using a neck roll seemed to help, reducing caffeine, making sure I was well-hydrated, taking B12 and C vitamins and magnesium.  Then when the lockdowns came and I was using a facemask I realised that this pain was almost entirely eliminated by keeping the wind off my face.  I think looking back I was suffering from a type of nerve pain/damage.  At the time read that coeliacs can suffer from nerve damage caused by nutritional deficiencies and inflammation, and there was hope that as bodywide healing took place, following the adoption of a strict gluten free diet and addressing nutritional deficiencies, recovery was possible.   During this time, I used to spend a lot of time outdoors with my then young children, who would be playing in the park, and I'd be sheltering my face with an upturned coat collar, trying to stay our of the cold wind!  It was during this time a number of people with a condition called Trigeminal Neuralgia came up to me and introduced themselves, which looking back was nothing short of miraculous as I live in a pretty sparsely populated rural community and it is quite a rare condition.   I met a number of non-coeliacs who had suffered with this issue  and all bar one found relief in taking medication like amitriptyline which are type of tricyclic anti-depressant.   They were not depressed, here their doctors had prescribed the drugs as pain killers to address nerve pain, hence I mention here.  Nerve pain caused by shingles is often treated with this type of medication in the UK too, so it is definitely worth bearing in mind if standard pain killers like aspirin aren't working.
