If You Were Offered $100K To Eat A Piece Of Bread/cake/scroll/croissant Would You Go For It?

A friend of mine has made the following statement:

Someone asked me if I would be willing to eat a croissant and film my reaction to it and offered to pay me $150 for it! :rolleyes:

I said no way! But having thought about it for a little while, I'm thinking it might not have been such a bad endeavour. I'd want to bargain with them a little bit and I think I'd want a higher price though... More like 10-100 thousand dollars maybe???

What do you think? Would you eat something laden with gluten so that you could earn a certain amount of money?

For $150, I wouldn't do it, but I think would do it for a lot more money.

There is too much depersonalization fostered by the internet and reality television, so people are thinking that games and gambling, combined with voyeurism, have the better outcome than real life doing the right thing.

Would you eat something laden with gluten so that you could earn a certain amount of money?

I recently was glutened at my daughters wedding reception and the "effects" are still very fresh in my mind (and body).

No I would not.No amount of money is worth that .Not to mention the fact I would not want a camera there during the explosions :blink:

I may do it for $10K or more but would feel conflicted inside knowing what I did after being soooooo careful for nearly six months. :o

I would be all over that. But it would need to be a hell of a lot more than $150 for me to purposefully eat gluten. I'm thinking over $3000.

At this point, absolutely! Not sure about later when I've been completely gluten free and feel better though.

If someone gave me 100K, I'd definitely eat gluten. I'd do it for as low as $3K but I also have a wedding and honeymoon to pay for :)

No amount of $$$ can compensate me for the the years I have spent in gluten-induced hell. If you lived what I have lived, you would not even find this question amusing..... :unsure: and I have a gigantic sense of humor. B)

I suppose some people think watching someone have "potty issues" is entertaining or funny?? (if so, geesh, get a life !!!!)....but loss of brain function, burning nerve pain, ataxia, hair loss, insomnia and joint pain, needing help with getting dressed or being picked up off the bathroom floor because I am so drained of energy, head banging from a migraine and soaking wet and trembling from nervous system impairment? feeling totally disoriented??...wow...that's not so much fun nor very pretty to watch...just ask my husband how much "fun" it's been....

Not sure celiac disease symptoms should be considered a "you tube" event. :rolleyes: WTF??? It's hard enough to be viewed with credibility as it is....many people thinking Gluten-free is "just a fad" and some people told--for years-- "it's all in your head"...

Man, if someone I knew asked ME that question, knowing all I have been through, my husband would probably punch his lights out. :lol:

No amount of $$$ can compensate me for the the years I have spent in gluten-induced hell. If you lived what I have lived, you would not even find this question amusing..... :unsure: and I have a gigantic sense of humor. B)

I wholeheartedly agree! I would have to be pennyless, homeless and very desperate for the money before I let someone film my reactions, one of which is seizures. Medical suffering should not be a source of entertainment.

For $10-1000K? I could possibly stand the (at least) day and a half of seizures. Then the couple of days of recovery would be pushing it. For $150? No! I'm not trying to bragg or boast about anything, but I make $150 in four hours at work and hopefully even less time after my annual review. So,,, $10-100K, maybe. $150,,,,,,, no, not worth my time. :D

      Hi Charlie, You sound like you have been having a rough time of it. Coeliac disease can cause a multitude of skin, mouth and throat problems. Mouth ulcers and enamel defects are well known but other oral conditions are also more common in people with coeliac disease: burning tongue, inflamed and swollen tongue, difficulty swallowing, redness and crusting...

I agree wholeheartedly with @knitty kitty: "I wish doctors would check for nutritional deficiencies and gastrointestinal issues before prescribing antidepressants." I had a type of tingling/sometimes pain in my cheek about 2 years after my diagnosis. I noticed it after standing in cold wind, affecting...

      Hi Charlie, You sound like you have been having a rough time of it. Coeliac disease can cause a multitude of skin, mouth and throat problems. Mouth ulcers and enamel defects are well known but other oral conditions are also more common in people with coeliac disease: burning tongue, inflamed and swollen tongue, difficulty swallowing, redness and crusting in the mouth corners, and dry mouth to name but some. The link below is for paediatric dentistry but it applies to adults too.  Have you had follow up for you coeliac disease to check that your anti-tTG2 antibodies levels have come down? Are you certain that you not being exposed to significant amounts of gluten? Are you taking a PPI for your Barrett's oesophagus? Signs of changes to the tongue can be caused by nutritional deficiencies, particularly iron, B12 and B9 (folate) deficiency. I would make sure to take a good quality multivitamin every day and make sure to take it with vitamin C containing food - orange juice, broccoli, cabbage etc.  Sebaceous hyperplasia is common in older men and I can't find a link to coeliac disease.   Russ.   Oral Manifestations in Pediatric Patients with Coeliac Disease – A Review Article

      Hi @Charlie1946 You are very welcome.   I agree wholeheartedly with @knitty kitty:  "I wish doctors would check for nutritional deficiencies and gastrointestinal issues before prescribing antidepressants." I had a type of tingling/sometimes pain in my cheek about 2 years after my diagnosis.  I noticed it after standing in cold wind, affecting  me after the event - for example, the evening after standing outside, I would feel either tingling or stabbing pain in my cheek.   I found using a neck roll seemed to help, reducing caffeine, making sure I was well-hydrated, taking B12 and C vitamins and magnesium.  Then when the lockdowns came and I was using a facemask I realised that this pain was almost entirely eliminated by keeping the wind off my face.  I think looking back I was suffering from a type of nerve pain/damage.  At the time read that coeliacs can suffer from nerve damage caused by nutritional deficiencies and inflammation, and there was hope that as bodywide healing took place, following the adoption of a strict gluten free diet and addressing nutritional deficiencies, recovery was possible.   During this time, I used to spend a lot of time outdoors with my then young children, who would be playing in the park, and I'd be sheltering my face with an upturned coat collar, trying to stay our of the cold wind!  It was during this time a number of people with a condition called Trigeminal Neuralgia came up to me and introduced themselves, which looking back was nothing short of miraculous as I live in a pretty sparsely populated rural community and it is quite a rare condition.   I met a number of non-coeliacs who had suffered with this issue  and all bar one found relief in taking medication like amitriptyline which are type of tricyclic anti-depressant.   They were not depressed, here their doctors had prescribed the drugs as pain killers to address nerve pain, hence I mention here.  Nerve pain caused by shingles is often treated with this type of medication in the UK too, so it is definitely worth bearing in mind if standard pain killers like aspirin aren't working.
