  1. lolz - one of the dumb things i had to learn is to stop licking my fingers! in the beginning, i would fix the kids something to eat ('regular' chinese leftovers comes to mind, where the 'soy' sauce is made of wheat) take it out of the microwave after heating it, stick my finger in it to test the temperature, and stick my finger in my mouth. herp derp....
  2. have you read the newbie thread? https://www.celiac.com/forums/topic/91878-newbie-info-101/ i think you should try using a food journal to see exactly what you're eating. i have a delayed reaction to gluten (24-48 hours) so the food journal helped me to pinpoint what i'd been eating (or where or out of what, etc) when i couldn't remember everything...
  3. ohhhhhhhhhhhh kaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.......................??? i don't see your point, but, wow, thanks for letting us know nearly a year later.
  4. good luck i travel to tuscaloosa (not far from b'ham - you have to drive through it to get to t-town) a few times a year and haven't been able to find anywhere (haha in the whole state, pretty much) we went to panama city, fl last year (through L.A. <'lower alabama' ) and the 'find me gluten free' app on my phone stayed blank until we hit atlanta....
  5. LOLZ thank you! probably the funniest video about celiac (" 'convenient' for who, exactly....?" ) lololz!
  6. i am throwing sauerkraut and brats in the crock pot tonight. went away for the weekend and got glutened somewhere........ mine is a delayed reaction, so at least it didn't ruin the weekend. (although, i was suspicious when i started having balance issues) rahhh.... i have a ton of stuff to do and all i want to do is go to bed.
  7. the last few times i have been glutened, it's been from eating out unfortunately, the sad reality is: most restaurants (especially fast food) can't or won't keep your food completely safe. there are just too many opportunities to get crumbs on things or cook them on grills that are already contaminated by gluten. or your order gets mixed up (even if...
  8. i had vertigo (o my gosh, i had the worst attack of it while DRIVING - i do not wish that on anyone. plus, i was at the edge of a steep mountain cliff, so i'm lucky i got the car stopped without going over the edge) but now i'm fine. i don't know that i'll ever bungie jump (HA HA NOT A CHANCE!!!) but my migraines went away, as well. asthma cleared up...
  9. one of my best friends is now a co-owner of a restaurant. i was like, YAY!!! i'll finally have somewhere to eat out without worry!!!! nope. his business partner wants nothing to do with food allergy responsibility aka he's afraid if they tout something as gluten free/celiac safe that someone will sue them if they make a mistake. 'too much risk' even...
  10. nah. pick your battles. chances are, you would have had to wait on an appointment, anyway. mine was two weeks after my dx (congratulations, you have celiac, eat gluten free, have a nice day) - i was, like: what am i supposed to eat in the mean time???? so, i did a ton of research and asked around here. by the time my appointment came around, i cancelled...
  11. my celiac gene must have turned 'on' when i was (or soon after) pregnant with my first baby. of course, i didn't know i had it. i had a miscarriage very early on (very wierd, because baby's cells kept multiplying, just not enough (?) ) anyway, i had to have a d&c with that one and doctors said i might have problems with any subsequent pregnancies....
  12. at a dinner meeting... she (as i am unpacking my dinner from home): oh, i hear you have - what is it? - celiac? me: yep. that's why i'm brown baggin' it... she: oh, yeah, i know. they said i have that, too. me: then, why are you eating a ROLL.... she: oh, i could never follow the diet. it's too hard. (as she waves the roll...
  13. do not borrow trouble! this is your little miracle you are gluten-free, (the way your body 'runs' correctly) so this pregnancy should be a walk in the park worry = stress <no no no!
  14. WOW! congratulations!!! i guess this gluten free stuff must be working!! lololz
  15. my kid just graduated and we are still helping to pay her bills. i am thankful she is still allowed to be covered by our health insurance. :/ she is getting ready to go to grad school. she came down to visit for Easter and i had to give her $$ to get back to where she lives. hang in there, i'm all about giving pep talks to the young and forward moving...
  16. i agree: food journal - and be nice to your intestines! lolz - you can't see them, but if you have celiac, the poor things are a mess. just keep writing down everything you eat in relation to how you are feeling. if something doesn't digest well, remove the offending food for now. it's a boring diet eating just safe stuff (lolz my 'go to' is turkey sandwich...
  17. i skip the nitrites (sulfites, sulfates, nitrates, i do not know the difference but i try to avoid them) the less ingredients the better. i have no problem with celery powder - i think that is in the bacon that i buy (i get the uncured kind - oscar meyer and hormel right off the top of my head) the less ingredients the better. yeah, a little more pricey...
  18. o, and the cancer or whatever you are worried with: your immune system has been limping along until now. you are essentially rebooting it with an upgrade to be super immune system. whatever cancer you don't have now has an enemy to fight it: your autoimmune system. mine works like a champ, now. i used to catch everything and anything that came around...
  19. if your beans are gluten free, you aren't causing any damage, but, if you have gone a very long time undiagnosed (as were many of us) you may want to lay off the foods that are hard to digest or make you uncomfortable. what you are describing is probably withdrawal (when you said sick arms i went 'oh, yeah, i remember that' lolz) it feels kind of like the...
  20. show of hands: how many of us are offended by pictures that include bread??? geez...
  21. lolz, nicole - i agree with you (and no amount of coffee is going to make that stuff 'funny', sorry) we should all make fun of the people with, say, heart conditions or diabetes..? a-holes... i would sure like to know what makes us such a target. i mean, seriously, i don't give a flying f*ck what other people are eating. mind your own damb business...
  22. i use generic: cvs and walgreens both have digestive enzymes that are gluten free (and soy free, yay!) they also have store brand probiotic and digestive enzyme combinations (those are the ones i take before breakfast) and i try to switch back & forth between the two store brands. recently, i tried the cvs brand digestive enzymes recommended for people...
  23. food journal is your best bet - if you have a hard time keeping track of what you're eating, try the 'myfitnesspal' app if you have a smart phone. it's a free app - helps me count my calories, too, so i can be sure that i am getting enough (trying to gain weight. always....) another thing you could do is an elimination diet - it's boring, but it works...
  24. i use prego with no problems. lots of the prego varieties are labeled gluten free i usually make my own sauce but jar sauce is good for 'cheat' nights when i'm lazy i can't swear, but i think i've eaten the barilla with no problems, either. i have a soy sensitivity, but if i don't overdo it, i can sneak a little. i have been on the gluten free diet...
  25. it cracks me up, anymore, when people feel sorry for me because i'm so 'deprived' lolz - the last party i went to i brought oysters bienville (mardi gras) people were amazed they were gluten free - i told them don't cry for me, peoples. i'm not living on baloney sandwiches, trust me then, there is my husband, who buys mcd's filet o fish (two of them...
