  1. Wow--since I've become even more sensitive to increasingly smaller amounts (traces) of gluten, I wouldn't last long over there! I wonder if the sensitive ones just never buy processed foods?
  2. Thanks--have to run out today, will pick some up and try it with the spuds the next time
  3. I have taken steroids in the past--when I was still sick with what the doctors thought was sinus/allergy infections. I used Prednisone and had injections of Decadron. The side effects I had were primarily facial puffiness and weight gain. My face was noticably fuller. I really don't remember any stomach issues related to the steroids--but like I said...
  4. Sounds good--I'm in the market for new dinner ideas. I like the boneless breasts--not so much work . I'll be doing the dairy-free version, though
  5. I like the idea of the boullion--it would add the saltiness w/ some additional flavor. Do you know off hand which brands are gluten-free?
  6. Betty--I have been reserving some of the cooking water from the potatoes in a glass measuring cup. I then mash the potatoes with a hand mixer, adding enough cooking water and Smart Balance to make them the consistancy I want. I make sure I remember to salt the water at the beginning of cooking--we think it makes a difference as opposed to adding salt later...
  7. Modified corn and potato starch are fine. So is maltodextrin. MSG is safe from a gluten perspective. Many people get adverse effects from it, it really is not good for you.(in my opinion) Modified food starch on a label from a company that will not hide gluten (kraft, Con Agra, etc.) is a matter of reading the label. They will list the source of the...
  8. Smunkeemom--Not at all! I actually get the "adult" version--when I was sick, and even now when I get a gluten reaction, I can tell that things are more acid. I didn't mean to take the discusson in a different direction, I've never seen this adressed before Thanks!
  9. It has a nice consistancy--like reg. milk. The taste is good--but on the sweet side. I use it for hot cocoa, puddings, w/cereal those kinds of things. I don't use it for, say mashed potatoes. If you have trouble with potatoes, it could bother you because it is potato based. That's why I use it--I don't do well with rice or soy. Potatoes are one of the...
  10. My husband always says--"if ya can't pay the rent, ya gotta get out" or the ever popular--"catch that and paint it green". Classy
  11. Lynne--If you don't mind my asking, what did you order at Cracker Barrel? We always liked to go there, and if there's something safe, and I could go there again, my husband would be so happy
  12. I love salty and chocolate together! Years ago, a co-worker (and friend) of mine and I used to get a bag of potato chips and a bunch of milk chocolate break-up and eat the two together while we were supposed to be working --good times!
  13. I was laughing so hard, I hit the wrong key and almost had to start another topic!
  14. I experienced that--I had a lot of stomach problems when I was a child. I even fainted at church once when I was around 10 or so. But my teen years were great--I don't remember any problems then. It wasn't until the C-section birth of my 2nd. son when I was 29 that I begen to have stomach problems and anemia again.
  15. Stefi--I had to laugh--I just got back from CVS and picked up a bag of dark chocolate Dove Easter eggs! The ingredient list looked fine--I plan to call tomorrow morning just to make sure.
  16. Betty--I have not been able to find it in any stores here (southern NJ). When I placed my order last week, the woman checked her list and could not find any store that carried it here, either. She told me they are a small company and just depend on word of mouth. I copied some of their info. and brought it into my Whole Foods and to my small local health...
  17. Ursula--I am so sorry to hear that your family is being less than supportive. I really understand that. As for those forums that you used to be a part of, it's their loss. I'm glad thaat you are a part of our support group
  18. Thanks for posting that, Carole--it was really interesting.
  19. How about those heat pad things that adhere to your skin under your clothes? Could you leave work long enough to pick some up? A friend of mine with a bad back used to wear them to work all the time, and no one could tell. Hope you feel better--cramps are no fun
  20. Hey Susan--you know what they say about two great minds.... . Oh well--maybe we'll get even more stories this way
  21. As discussed on another thread, we thought it would be interesting to hear any tips, stories, or encouragement from the "veteran celiacs" here. Really--anything you can offer would be great
  22. Betty, I think I'm following you around the board ! Anyway, I second (or third?) the notion of a thread of tips and encouragement from all of the veterans here. I know there is a lot we can learn from them!
  23. Betty--I know what you mean about the gluten-free breads. I just don't eat any of them any more. I did figure out that tapioca flour, and to a lesser extent, rice flour give me cramping, pain, and D. Just doing away with those flours, and anything made with them (and rice milk, too) has helped. When I want a cookie, I do eat the Enjoy Life Gingerbread...
  24. I don't have a recipe, but there are some on here that people posted around the holidays--did you try doing a search for 'cornbread'? I really like the Gluten Free Pantry Cornbread mix.
