ARCHIVED Need A Good Pizza
Guhlia replied to FeedIndy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I make my own crusts. They freeze really well and they reheat really well. I use Bette Hagman's Easy Pizza recipe from The Gluten Free Gourmet Cooks fast and Healthy. I cook the crust for 15-20 minutes before topping, then I top with sauce and cheese and bake for another 5-10 minutes. Very good. Very tasty. -
ARCHIVED Chocholate Chip Question
Guhlia replied to zachsmom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If GV didn't label it as gluten free, I would stear clear. They're very good about labeling. It could have been an older bag though before they started labeling gluten-free. I think that's a relatively new thing within the past two years. Maybe I'm wrong. -
ARCHIVED Need To Vent
Guhlia replied to WalksonWater's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
You're lucky you have a Wal-mart near you. Their store brand, Great Value, labels gluten free. You'll find shopping easy so long as you stick to the GV brand. There are a ton of options with GV brand, just be sure to check the label each time you go to make sure it's still stamped as gluten free. Some of your options: potato flakes for mashed potatoes, cheese... -
ARCHIVED 2 Questions For The Pros...im Newly Diagnosed
Guhlia replied to a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Glad that you're feeling better. Your daily D could be a result of coffee. Coffee is a known diuretic as is nutrasweet. If you're having D after drinking it, you may want to lay off of it until your system has had more of a chance to heal, then reintroduce. If you need your daily cup, try using real sugar instead of nutrasweet and see if that makes a difference... -
Woo-hoo! I passed!

Soy powder is different from soy flour. As per your flour question. It sounds to me as though you have enough. I generally use Bette Hagman's rice flour blend in EVERYTHING: 3 parts white rice flour, 2 parts potato starch, 1 part tapioca starch. I add 1 teaspoon of xantham gum per 1 to 1-1/2 cups of flour blend. I have found this to be the absolute best...

ARCHIVED Lasagne Rice Casserole
Guhlia replied to missy'smom's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Just wanted to add that Tinkyada's lasagna noodles are very tasty. They're extremely hard to work with, but I made a very good lasagna out of them that everyone loved. -
ARCHIVED Enterolab Test--should I Do It?
Guhlia replied to Ksmith's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I totally agree with Carla. The amount of damage that you would do to your intestines in the 2-6 months you would need to consume gluten to have a test show up positive just isn't worth it. If you already know you have Celiac then there's no need to further push the issue. Are you still having symptoms? If so, perhaps that's why she wants you to get tested... -
ARCHIVED Got Sick From Outback gluten-free Menu
Guhlia replied to angel42's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Some bleu cheese is safe, some isn't. If you're unsure, call the company. I think Kraft's bleu cheese dressing is gluten free. I think T Marzetti's might be also, but I'm definitely not sure about that one. -
ARCHIVED Cedar Lane Mexican Dip
Guhlia replied to linz7997's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
It's definitely a misprint. It IS gluten free. I also called them a few months ago to make sure it was safe before eating it. They said they had to use up the rest of the boxes and then the labels would be changed. -
ARCHIVED Got Sick From Outback gluten-free Menu
Guhlia replied to angel42's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
The Chopped Bleu Cheese salad doesn't use the bleu cheese dressing which may not be gluten free. Corporate still isn't sure that it's not safe, but the terragon vinegar used in it is suspect. Anyway, the chopped bleu cheese salad has a vinagrette dressing and then is topped with cinnamon pecans and bleu cheese crumbles. It is fabulous. Most of us do... -
ARCHIVED Confused About Soy
Guhlia replied to LoveMyHoney's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Soy in general is safe for Celiacs. However, many Celiacs also have other intolerances, some of which are soy related. -
ARCHIVED Got Sick From Outback gluten-free Menu
Guhlia replied to angel42's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Just a positive sidenote... We went to Ouback today and I had the chopped bleu cheese salad and the chicken on the barbie as well as some of my husband's Outback Special steak. Yum. Everything was delicious as usual. We ended our meal with the chocolate thunder. I always react within the first few hours and I don't feel a thing, it's been six hours now. -
ARCHIVED Corn Tortillas
Guhlia replied to crittermom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Mission corn tortillas are awesome for soft tortillas. They are so much better than the other ones on the market. I haven't had any problems with these and I'm relatively sensitive. As for fried tortilla shells, I often fry my own with Mission. They also make fried ones. Yum. -
ARCHIVED Barry Farms Pastas?
Guhlia replied to ptkds's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Try www.shopbydiet.com for Tinkyada... It's a great website and they run weekly specials on food items. I'm not affiliated with them in any way, they're just my favorite site for online grocery shopping. -
ARCHIVED Newb
Guhlia replied to flutewise's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Your doctor should be able to do a blood test for Celiac. DO NOT go gluten free until after the test is done or it will likely skew the results. As for milk (casein), the FDA's new laws mandate that Milk must be listed if it is in the product. This is much more in the know than gluten. Some alternative milks contain gluten, some still contain milk. Read the... -
ARCHIVED Got Sick From Outback gluten-free Menu
Guhlia replied to angel42's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Yes, it used to happen to me all the time. I think key to not getting sick is to make a HUGE deal out of Celiac. I basically, in nicer words, tell them that if my food isn't gluten free I will be puking all over the place. Not exactly true, but I don't get sick anymore since telling them that. Also, make sure they write gluten free on the ticket in big letters... -
Have you tried Bette Hagman's "Easy Pizza" recipe? It's our favorite. Never mushy, easy to do thicker or thinner crust, great with even moist toppings...

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Dog Food? ;o)
Guhlia replied to Yenni's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Does anyone know if IAMS dog foods are gluten free? I get the minichunks for my dog and they appear gluten free on the label. I'd like to know for sure. Anyone know offhand before I call the company? -
ARCHIVED Red Bridge Beer
Guhlia replied to Guhlia's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hawkeye, if you call your liquor store they will likely order you what you want and reserve it for you. The Bard's Tale Beer is a much richer beer with a full flavor and a nice bite to it. New Grist is kind of more like a light beer in comparison, still good though. Red Bridge tastes more like a mainstream bar beer with a slightly perfume-like flavor such... -
ARCHIVED Discovering
Guhlia replied to lilmama's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Wal-mart's Great Value brand is awesome... Cheaper than the brand name stuff, tastier than the brand name stuff, and labeled gluten free. I've never ever gotten glutened off of Great Value brand foods. They are one of the few companies that I really trust. Their newer stuff (at least the juices) has "Gluten Free" in large bold print instead of the smaller... -
ARCHIVED Red Bridge Beer
Guhlia replied to Guhlia's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
It's here!!! It's delicious!!! It tastes similar to a Heineken and Rolling Rock mix. It has no bite and is slightly lighter than Bard's Tale. All in all, very good. I'll let you guys know how it tastes when it's actually cold. Right now it's kind of sort of cold. Still great! Woo-Hoo!!!! BTW, it was the projected $29.99, significantly cheaper than all... -
ARCHIVED Victorias Secret
Guhlia replied to minibabe's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications

ARCHIVED Onion Rings And Hamburger Buns
Guhlia replied to Guhlia's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Melissa, so glad you were able to enjoy onion rings again.. Well worth the work, huh? Kolka, I'm not sure which pancake recipe I used. Use a regular recipe and sub a white rice flour blend for the all-purpose flour: 3 parts white rice, 2 parts potato starch, 1 part tapioca starch... I add 1 tsp xantham gum per 1 to 1-1/2 cups flour. This always works... -
ARCHIVED Bloated Stomach - Will It Go Away?
Guhlia replied to Ltrain917's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I looked 6 months pregnant on a good day pre-diagnosis. I was very skinny and sickly looking back then with a huge gut. Within weeks of cutting out gluten my stomach began to shrink. It's still not where I would like it to be, but it's a lot better than it was. If you don't see much improvement or enough improvement on the gluten free diet, try cutting out...
