Nascar Superbowl Ad Takes A Jab At The gluten-free Diet

I don't know if you all have seen this Superbowl ad yet. In it the star says, "When our idea of danger is eating gluten, there's trouble a foot." implying that we are a bunch of sissy, picky eaters.   :huh:  It is a totally unnecessary jab at the gluten-free diet, and frankly, they are quite wrong - for us gluten IS dangerous.

Would it even cross their minds to say something like,

"When our idea of danger is eating walking into walls (cause we are blind), there's trouble a foot." ?

OR "When our idea of danger is being bullied, there's trouble a foot."?

OR "When our idea of danger is eating sugar, there's trouble a foot."?

OR "When our idea of danger is having a little cancer, there's trouble a foot."?

 

 

If these are reprehensible, then so it using a genetic illness that can kill if sufferers are not constantly on guard about gluten. It is bully behavior. And it totally disgusting.

Ya knowwwwwwwww.................I used to like Nascar, or rather, I have always liked fast cars and owned one myself in my younger days. The one thing which kept me away from track life and Nascar races was an attiude such as the one depicted in the commercial. I am pretty sure there are nice, down to earth Nascar types who have the same belief system that I do and I would be happy to call a friend.  But when I see stuff like this, I can totally see why some people call them hillbilly rednecks.  I am still trying to figure out why a disease has so many people threatened to the point where they openly trash our way of eating that is so necessary to our health and well being.

 

Now off I go to sign that petiton to have Ricky Billy Bob pulled from the air......... :wacko:

i had to watch this 3 times before i saw/heard what y'all are talking about.  ok, yeah, they shouldn't have said that, but i think it makes more fun of nascar than anything else.  gem is right, there *is* a certain mentality of race fans (it's generally nice)(hells to the yeah we are rednecks) anybody else actually ever *been* to a race?  i have never seen a fight break out among fans (unlike any other sporting event i ever went to) you are allowed to bring your own food & beverages into the stands (unlike any other sporting event i ever went to) and some tracks have gluten-free beer & snacks at their concession stands.   <i'm sure other sporting events are trying this as well)   i have spent weekends camping out with these people; they will share/give you their everything/whatever.   if you really want to blame somebody, i'm sure nobody in 'nascar' wrote that ad.

 

not defending that comment, but i have a sick sense of humor.  and the redneck in me says:  billy bob don't give a $#!t lololz ;)  y'all just made that ad 1 million times more valuable :)

Snort. :P  That's why I can't watch more than 5 minutes of racing - not my thing.

 

NASCAR actually isn't very big up here.  Car racing in general really.... Probably because there is snow on the tracks for 8 months of the year.   :rolleyes:

Here's the thing,  should they ever include ANY medical issues in "funny" commercials? No.  

If we as a community get up in arms over every mention and we go after people for things like this we are going to look lie crazy people.  I think it's important to pick battles. Don't like it, sure sound off about it.  Don't spend your money with those companies. But instead of banning one commercial with a petition, how about trying to make real change?   Write a letter to your congress person or something.  The FDA.  People who can change things.

 

And also, lets face it, of the people who you know are glue free, how many are glue free because it is the latest fad?  I am sure a majority of those you know on the diet IRL are because they think it's healthier.  THOSE are the people they are talking about and I get pissed at those people too because they are soft.  But that's my idea ;)

I'm not throwing anything at my friends here except maybe gluten free cookies or something useful!  ^_^

 

That's why I still defended a portion of Nascar Nation because I do know there are many good people out there who happen to like Nascar...people I could hang with.

I also never went to races because you could go seriously deaf from one.  We Yankees have races up here at Louden in NH and they are LOUD!  I have to admit that I would just love to hit the track in one of those things.  Zoom Zoom!  So, you see, I guess there is a little redneck in me after all......Ha, Ha!

 

Seriously, Stephanie.......our government is the last bunch I would trust to change anything regarding Celiac.  And Ricky Billy Bob is only going to incite those intelligence- challenged people out there who revel in blasting anything gluten free because they have no clue it's attached to a real disease.  It isn't even a funny commercial.

They ought to stick to puppies and Clydesdales!  :)

Seriously, Stephanie.......our government is the last bunch I would trust to change anything regarding Celiac. 

 

Oh I get this but given the extra time to try and do something, I would go that route over trying to get an ad pulled.  Do both is a better approach ;)   

 

You should look into those driving schools ;)  Get your thrill on!  You'll have to hit NH or DE though ;)

I TOO HAVE SIGNED....HOPE IT HELPS.....I WAS DIAGNOSED IN 1950...CHANGED FAMILIES 3 TIMES AND THE PERMANCY OF GLUTEN FREE DIET WAS NOT GIVEN TO LAST FAMILY

I SUFFERED FROM SERIOUS CALCIUM DEFICIENCY IN TEETH.,MULTIPLE GUT ISSUES...GLUTEN FREE IS CRUCIAL FOR ME.....

MANUFACTURES OF MIXES AND MANY FOODS HAVE COME ABOARD WHEN THEY HAD EMPLOYEES WHO DISCOVERED THE SERIOUSNESS OF GLUTEN IN FOOD.

MAY GOD BLESS THE ENDEAVORS OF THOSE WHO BEGIN TO UNDERSTAND

I'd suggest that other ideas be followed thru by those suggesting these good ideas. I for one am really weary of being shunned, ignored and unfriended in person by people who are exposed to such ignorant information as the implication that gluten is not so dangerous as say "driving around and around in really fast cars".

 

I was so close to death (20 plus years ago) when a doctor finally paid attention to me, and got me admitted to the hospital that they were willing to draw only ONE vial of blood (enough to type and cross match for blood transfusions) to keep me from passing during the night so they could run tests in a couple days to figure out why I was starving to death.

I still have serious muscle, CNS, organ, bone damage, have lost several organs to malnutrition and live with consequences every day.

 And it is way more dangerous than driving a car that has a driver protection cage, special neck protection, fire prevention suits, paramedics and other emergency medical personnel moments away in case of danger. Eating gluten for Celiac's is guaranteed to cause bodily damage, illness, and suffering without any protections from harm or emergency care possible.

 

Their is no excuse for such bully behavior. And in my opinion, as long as we accept bullying of any sort, we set the example that it is OK to bully others and expose those less able to defend themselves to such behavior.

It looks like progress has been made! I just read that the 1 minute commercial has been pulled, but there are still 2 left. 1 is 30 seconds, 1 is 2 minutes.

If you haven't sent this to the people that love you that watched your body falling apart due to this disease, please do it. I'd love to see this while thing get pulled.

I read that they are just taking that snippet about gluten out of the commercial, I guess we will see tomorrow.  It doesn't bother me too much since it wanes in comparison to other things like the joy behar incident, but if all the other advocate groups can make a big deal out of things in commercials and get them pulled, then we should too.  LOL.

There are reports only the online version is edited and it has aired as the original circulating the Internet. With that said reader beware it is the internet which in short can be a tempest in a teapot. Tomorrow we shall find out and I hope NBC pulls that line. I did sign the petition as I saw it a doorway for potential bullying and making our lives as celiacs even worse. Lord knows we can't even expect people to take us serious when we go out to eat thanks to Jimmy Kimmel , Joy Beher and others who have made us out to be a punchline that has none of us laughing.

I am shocked at the online backlash about the petition, i find that seriously appalling as no one challenges the real estate of ADHD,Lupus, peanut allergies or diabetes. But let it be heard celiac and gluten free and all heck busts loose.

I myself today at the store heard a nasty comment when looking into a gluten free treat. I had a lady tell me I was a very nasty term and I was what was wrong with this country. She followed me thru the store until I stopped my buggy and asked her if she had anything else she really cared to do today outside stalk me and I was not putting up with it. She left after I whipped out my phone as my hubby approached me asking if I were ok. I said yes and we both laughed at this hag who looked like the poster child for people of Walmart.com seriously what the heck gives.

Also I heard the person who created the petitions site has in the past few days has had to deal with a massive crapstorm of trolls acting ugly. I am so ashamed of how other people are handling the request to not air the ad at all. I do not see this behavior over at peta or other animal rights groups sites over go daddy right now. Hmmm

Where I live there are a few smaller towns of people who are a bit out there, and often when it comes to the stores like Whole Foods, or Trader Joes some of the town idiots like to go in and act dumb.

It aired with that part removed.  I told my husband about it and he got more riled up than I did.  He said "Why don't they change it to going without radiation for cancer? Same thing!"  lol

      Before being diagnosed coeliac I used to love Guinness. Being made from barley it should be something a coeliac shouldn’t drink. But taking to another coeliac and they can drink it with no ill effects and have heard of others who can drink it too. is this everyone’s experience? Can I drink it? I get dermatitis herpetiformis and don’t get instant react...

      Taking Probiotics but Still Getting Sick After Gluten – Advice?

      NCGS does not cause damage to the small bowel villi so, if indeed you were not skimping on gluten when you had the antibody blood testing done, it is likely you have celiac disease.

      This is a very common question, and the most important thing to know is that no, Guinness is not considered safe for individuals with coeliac disease. While it's fascinating to hear anecdotes from other coeliacs who can drink it without immediate issues, this is a risky exception rather than the rule. The core issue is that Guinness is brewed from barley, which contains gluten, and the standard brewing process does not remove the gluten protein to a level safe for coeliacs (below 20ppm). For someone like you who experiences dermatitis herpetiformis, the reaction is particularly significant. DH is triggered by gluten ingestion, even without immediate gastrointestinal symptoms. So, while you may not feel an instant stomach upset, drinking a gluten-containing beer like Guinness could very well provoke a flare-up of your skin condition days later. It would be a gamble with a potentially uncomfortable and long-lasting consequence. Fortunately, there are excellent, certified gluten-free stouts available now that can provide a safe and satisfying alternative without the risk.

      I will assume you did the gluten challenge properly and were eating a lot of gluten daily for 6-8 weeks before your test, but if not, that could be the issue. You can still have celiac disease with negative blood test results, although it's not as common:  Clinical and genetic profile of patients with seronegative coeliac disease: the natural history and response to gluten-free diet: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5606118/  Seronegative Celiac Disease - A Challenging Case: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9441776/  Enteropathies with villous atrophy but negative coeliac serology in adults: current issues: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34764141/  Approximately 10x more people have non-celiac gluten sensitivity than have celiac disease, but there isn’t yet a test for NCGS. If your symptoms go away on a gluten-free diet it would likely signal NCGS.
