What Unusual Concoctions Do You Enjoy?

I had a few that I thought were weird, but reading these I don't think I can top any of these.

I like peanut butter with apples (which a few others have mentioned). I used to love white bread with margarine and sliced bananas. I like to make chili and eat it with frito corn chip scoops. And one of my favorite snacks when I was a kid (other than the peanut butter with apples) was sour cream with fruit, usually peaches, raspberries, and bananas.

After reading these I dont eat anything too strange either... just tonite I had kielbasa with sauerkraut and applesauce. Its the sweet and sour mix together. My grandmother used to eat tomato soup on spaghetti and pork and bean sandwiches. My fiances stepfather eats spinach with mashed potatoes and ketchup mixed together. I dont think I could do that!

In college, I used to make Cheetos/Mashed Potato Sandwiches (sometimes with a little gravy -- normally around 2:00 a.m. -- haha)

I think pretty much anything in a corn tortilla is fair game -- salsa and guacamole make everything taste good!

I still like making homemade hash browns with over easy eggs (break the yolk and yum yum)

Oh and "Bronco's Mexican Suprise"

I take a casserole dish and spray oil on it.

Keep layering the following ingredients in order

Tortilla chips (I like Tostitos Gold or used to)

Refried Beans

Taco Seasoned Meat

Cheese

Layer that to the top - Bake in the oven for 15-20 minutes at 360 degrees.

Top with Sour Cream, Guac or Salsa and serve

So many people think it's gross, and swear they won't try it, but once they do they LOVE it:

Chocolate Covered Potato Chips (ones with ridges are strong enough to hold the choc.)

YUM!!!!

I love vanilla icecream with berry jam on it.

tunafish w/ mayo on potato chips

baked potatos with shredded cheddar and ranch dressing (I ate this every day in college at the dining hall!)

chicken breast cooked in apricot jam

I'm sure there's more, but I'm drawing a blank right now................

my husband likes eating chicken soup (I make it thick) with tortilla chips. :-)

I second the tuna with mayo and potato chips. :)

I also like french fries dipped in guacamole.

I guess the most unusual concoction that I eat is my mom's "Newfie Dinner".

Consists of cabbage, carrots, potatoes, turnip all boiled in a huge pot along with salt beef (or sometimes ham).

Trust me, it grows on you....... :P;)

Not that tasty, but sure as heck good for ya!

That sounds very familiar. I orginally came from Nova Scotia and a lot of the Newfie food was there as well. I have Newfoundland relatives who now live here in the US and many 'one pot' meals came with them.

In gluten-free days: apple pie topped with mustard pickles. Could still do this with a gluten-free pie.

Cream of Buckwheat cereal, stir in any god gluten-free trail mix (nuts, seeds, dried fruit) and sprinkle on cinnamon sugar. Claire

OMG--when I ate dairy, I used to always eat potato chips dipped in cottage cheese! I've never heard of anyone else who did it :D

I like Potato Chips with Cream Cheese.

Cooked Shrimp, Mayo & Spanish Olives. BTW, are Spanish Olives gluten-free?

In the fall I love to eat warm (must be homemade) applesauce on top of Yukon Gold mashed potatoes instead of gravy. Gotta have a little cinnamon in the applesauce.

french fries with mayo and ketchup--used to love that on occasion. hmmm, i can't think of anything really weird i eat now, although i'm sure my dh would think of some! i did grow up eating peanut butter and mayo sandwiches in my lunch. i know, most people think its henious--but if you think about it, it really the perfect food combination: you have the dry, sweet peanut butter which is perfectly complimented by the moist, tangy mayo or miracle whip :)

I used to eat peanut butter and miracle whip sandwiches as a kid too! I never heard of anyone else that did that. Now it sounds pretty gross....but it was yummy then! :D I also love (still) peanut butter and butter sandwiches. I would bring them to school and some of the kids thought that it was peanut butter and potatoes! I might be strange but not that strange ;)

Ha--I had completely forgotten about this--my mom used to make us peanut butter and butter sandwiches--also cream cheese and jelly! :D

My favorite things are all southern things I learned from my east Texas mom....Collards with ham (yum!), fried okra (coated with corn meal) (triple yum!), and cornbread dressing....it has boiled egg, celery, onion, some chopped chicken, salt/peper (to die for). My non-southern hubby and my kids adore these....although the okra took awhile for them to warm up to. When I really feel indulgent, I do up the fried okra and eat the whole package...better than french fries. And best of all, these items are naturally gluten free so I don't have to give them up! :lol:

Love this thread--I always used to dip my french fries in a chocolate shake--that's weird? Hmmmmmmmm and cottage cheese and doritoes, I used to smash the doritoes and add them to the cottage cheese--sometimes I added tuna! Princessa--I used to eat peanut butter and miracle whip sandwiches with a fresh tomato slice added--most of your ideas are shared ideas--not so weird huh. The cabbage mixture is a well known Weight Watchers meal--my mom made that for years. We aren't so weird!!!!!!!!!! Deb

before becoming a celiac I used to dip my pizza crust in the soda. Now it sounds really gross, but at the time it was great. :D

I just wanted to report that I continued my applesauce experiments -the answer was obvious, once I thought about it: cinnamon, of course! So now I've got: warm applesauce, mixed with some coconut cream (the creamier the better) and cinnamon. Tastes like apple pie, yum....

What???? There are people in this world who from birth don't understand fried okra??? I'm from the South, too, and cornbread dressing and fried okra should never need explaining in any company :)

Gotta admit though, that despite my southern heritage, I've never been a fan of any kind of greens.

Question for CMCM: What okra do you get that you don't have to worry about gluten? I'm assuming you just buy the okra and bread it yourself?

I was born in Canada, migrated to New England and now live in Pennsylvania. I like okra. I find the trick is not to overcook it so it gets mushy. Herre we can sometimes find it frozen - that's much better than canned. Claire

I LOOVVEE mashed potatoes with ketchup! And here's an intereting sandwhich I used to love...I first had it in the south of France, from a street vendor: A french roll with a fried veal cutlet and french fries in it. Boy was that one good!

      Hi @knitty kitty  Just revisiting this to get some help. I found after understanding the extent of my anxiety, my sleep got a little better. Flash forward to a few weeks later I have had a few bad sleeps in a row and I feel desperate for a good nights sleep. I understand worrying about it won’t help but one thing I had tied things too was dairy. Initially when I went gluten free I felt great for the first few weeks then started having some stomach pain. So thought maybe I was lactose intolerant. I started eating lactose free Greek yogurt and that did help take the cramping away I guess. Over the last few months I haven’t eaten it every single day and I went a few weeks without it. The last few nights I did have a small amount with breakfast and noticed that was the only new thing I’ve really added to my diet. I had seen a few other posts about this. Is it possible to still react to lactose free? Would this potentially be a dairy allergy? Or something else.

      I have taken the vitamins for a week. Haven't noticed any major changes but I will give it more time to see.

      @Charlie1946,  Sorry I sidetracked your thread a bit.  Apologies. Proton pump inhibitors, like Omeprazole, change the pH in our gastrointestinal systems which allows opportunistic microbes to move in and take over.  Have you been checked for SIBO?  There's a significant link between length of Omeprazole use and SIBO.  I had SIBO, thrush (Candida) and lichen planus and other problems while I was on Omeprazole.  I had to stop taking it.  It was a horrible time, so I understand how painful and frustrating it is.   You change your microbiome (the bacteria and microbes living inside you) by changing what you eat.  They eat what you eat.  Change the menu and you get different customers.   I changed my diet.  I cut out dairy because I was reacting to the casein and lactose.  I cut out all processed foods and most carbohydrates. I ate meat and veggies mostly, some fruit like apples and mandarin oranges.  By cutting out all the excess carbohydrates, lactose, and empty carbs in processed gluten-free foods, the opportunistic microbes get starved out.  SIBO bacteria send chemical messages to our brains demanding more carbs, so be prepared for carb cravings, but don't let the microbiome control you!   The skin and digestive system is continuous.  The health of our outside skin reflects the health of our gastrointestinal system.  Essential B vitamins, like Thiamine B 1 and especially Niacin B 3, are needed to repair intestinal damage and keep bad bacteria in check.  Niacin helps improve not only the intestinal tract, but also the skin.  Sebaceous Hyperplasia is linked to being low in Niacin B 3.  Lichen Planus is treated with Niacinamide, a form of Niacin B 3.   Vitamins are chemical compounds that our bodies cannot make.  We must get them from our food.  If our food isn't digested well (low stomach acid from Omeprazole causes poor digestion), then vitamins aren't released well.  Plus there's a layer of SIBO bacteria absorbing our vitamins first between the food we've eaten and our inflamed and damaged villi that may have difficulty absorbing the vitamins.  So, taking vitamin supplements is a way to boost absorption of essential nutrients that will allow the body to fight off the microbes, repair and heal.   Doctors are taught in medical learning institutions funded by pharmaceutical companies.  The importance of nutrition is downplayed and called old fashioned.  Doctors are taught we have plenty to eat, so no one gets nutritional deficiency diseases anymore.  But we do, as people with Celiac disease, with impaired absorption.  Nutritional needs need to be addressed first with us.  Vitamins cannot be patented because they are natural substances.  But pharmaceutical drugs can be.  There's more money to be made selling pharmaceutical drugs than vitamins.   Makes me wonder how much illness could be prevented if people were screened for Celiac disease much earlier in life, instead of after they've been ill and medicated for years.   Talk to your doctor and dietician about supplementing essential vitamins and minerals.   Interesting Reading: The Duration of Proton Pump Inhibitor Therapy and the Risk of Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC12250812/#:~:text=The long-term use of,overgrowth dynamics is less clear.       @knitty kitty Thank you so much for all that information! I will be sure to check it out and ask my doctor.  I am just at a loss, I am on my 2nd round of miracle mouthwash and I brush and scrape my tongue and (sorry this is gross) it's still coated in the middle
