  1. What I do to cut down on cc possibilities is to buy whole bean unflavored coffee and grind it myself. I had to buy a grinder, but fresh ground coffee is better anyway and pushing the button on the grinder isn't too much of an effort.
  2. I'm sorry that you are going through this. My daughter is 18 and having to deal with this while going to college in another city. She finds that it makes the adjustment harder. For example, she wasn't at all those beer drinking parties, as they were not expected to have an extra gluten free keg. I must admit, that as her mother, I don't mind that she...
  3. For some reason, my Japanese beetles mainly leave the veggies alone. They do like the grape leaves, but not the grapes. I don't have nearly so many now as I used to so it doesn't take up as much time dealing with them. I'm glad you found a way to get the traps to work for you.
  4. Chamomile tea, thank you for the warning. I could have used your advice when I was first diagnosed. I got glutened even by the Amy's that was not labelled as processed in shared facilities. I figured out eventually that I am unusually sensitive. That warning is voluntary just so you know. Not having it there doesn't mean squat. I grow my own chamomile...
  5. Cross contamination is a big issue for me too. I don't think that a tiny bit of cc from pot that cooked something with a tiny bit of cc would be an issue, but I could be wrong. It was not my experience that scratched non stick cookware was a source of cc. I also have had problems with chicken. It is inconsistent with me. Sometimes I could eat it without...
  6. It is possible that you will be sensitive enough so that gluten in the dishwasher will bother you as mentioned above. In that case you will probably need to ask your husband to go gluten free too and that would be a big step. It is also possible that you aren't that sensitive and you will be able to live with a gluten eater without too many problems...
  7. I hand pick my Japanese beetles - yuck! I have heard that the traps don't work so I haven't tried them. Open Original Shared Link Gardening is such a battle with pests. I get deer eating everything that I don't enclose with mesh. There was one hanging out in the neighbors yard as I worked the other day. Now I see a chipmunk hole in the middle of...
  8. First all that rain and now it's hot and muggy with thunderstorms. Plus, we've got mosquitoes now too. We didn't get them till pretty late. I still haven't seen a Japanese beetle yet but I'm sure I will soon. I haven't even started my beans yet. I need to get busy.
  9. I hope that your husband's attitude is not typical for him. That doesn't bode will for the level of care required with a celiac child. You are not a mean mom. It is the same or worse than eating out of a garbage can. They made a Seinfeld episode about that.
  10. I haven't noticed a difference with being able to take a deep breath and glutening. I play saxophone, so you would think that I would notice if it were an issue for me. I do notice some correlation with allergy like symptoms, especially reactions to perfumes. That is pretty closely related. I'm glad that you are doing better.
  11. Without a proper diagnosis, it is possible that it is something else. Even with a proper diagnosis it is possible that it is something else. It is a good idea to go back to your doctor and get some professional help. Meanwhile, I found out that I got sensitive to lower levels of gluten over time. Symptoms would come back and I would eliminate more sources...
  12. Thank you for telling this story. Now we all know one more thing to check before a hospital stay. The possibility of not being able to get food from home would not have occurred to me before. I'm glad that you got through it and are recovering well at home.
  13. I found that I got sensitive to lower levels of gluten as I went along. Lactose intolerance was the most obvious indication of that. You could see if tightening up your diet a bit makes a difference.
  14. I was given a lot of Pepto as a kid too. I was also given aspirin. I had a lot of tummy aches. I don't know when they found out about the connection with Reyes Syndrome. More information: Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link In the British Isles there were warnings against the use of aspirin in children in 1989. Open Original...
  15. The safety and efficacy of vaccines in general has been thoroughly studied: Open Original Shared Link Low vaccination rates lead to an increase in death from preventable diseases. Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link Whether or not people want to get a vaccine for celiac disease is up to them. It is not contagious so it shouldn't...
  16. Peptol-Bismol is not recommended for children due to Reyes Syndrome. Open Original Shared Link
  17. You need to look at what you are ingesting when these events happen. It could be another food intolerance, or it could be cc in your diet. Does it happen at a certain time of year? When you go to a certain restaurant? During wheat harvest? After you eat a certain brand of chips? What helps me keep track is to keep a food/symptom journal. I keep...
  18. I think that the only good way is elimination/challenge dieting which is very difficult. It is worth it though. I had an issue similar to yours where I reacted to corn in a processed food item but not popcorn or corn on the cob. That made me believe that it was something else in the processed food item, either another ingredient or cross contamination...
  19. You are welcome. I really hope that it works out. I have a hard time watching my son be sick. He got diagnosed at 10 and is now 16. I can't imagine how hard that must be with a 2 year old. I guess he was sick then too, but I didn't know it. We are both on a diet like the one in the study, and have additionally found it necessary to do challenge...
  20. Soy is one of the major allergens so it might be a good idea to try eliminating that next. If eliminating the soy doesn't do the trick, you might want to try those processed grain containing cookies and pretzels next. There is that Tricia Thompson study of gluten-free grains (and soy) sometimes being contaminated. Open Original Shared Link There is also...
  21. If it is from your food you can try to figure it out with elimination/challenge diets. Try to keep your diet simple. Change one thing per week. It can take that long to notice a difference. Keep track of your symptoms. You have the option of eating more to see if your symptoms worsen, or eliminating to see if your symptoms improve. That is about the...
  22. I was dairy intolerant on diagnosis and for years before that. After 6 months to a year I was able to have it again. I am on this diet for the same reason as you except no rash. I was able to re-introduce a rice from Thailand. That's on the Fasano diet anyway. I haven't yet been able to introduce other stuff. I was pretty sick on diagnosis so it might...
  23. If I get glutened badly I get it coming out of both ends at the same time. I also get pretty incoherent. It's not pleasant.
  24. We've been getting a ton of rain too. Thank goodness for the raised beds. They were like islands in the sea of water puddles. We're eating well with strawberries, kohlrabi, broccoli, snap peas, beets, even a few tomatoes which started indoors before I transplanted them. New tomatoes won't be along for a while. We had some cold spells which did in most...
  25. Good question. It is tough. Even in the absence of illness, children go through phases. "Experts" have contradicting ideas about what to do. I tend to listen to my gut. As parents, we are closest to the problem and understand our children best.
