i had an appt. in boise yesterday (2 1/2 hours away) while there, we checked out a new store that has been opened up by a mother of celiac twins that goes to the same ped gi we do. EVERTHING in her store was gluten free----no label reading required. even though the store was small, i have never seen so many different gluten free products in one place. i am so excited about this place----i just wish it wasn't so far away for us. this is also the first time i have talked to anyone else that has twins with celiac. (her husband also has celiac) they are also having a kids celiac support group meeting tonight, but it is too far for us to drive on a school night---i really wish we could go. maybe they will have some this summer that we can attend.

the store is called "Jake's Place"---named after one of her celiac boys (who also is diabetic)

laurie--yes, it's boise idaho----meridian, actually. those towns just all kind of blend together. if you want to stop there, let me know and i will give you the address. where will you be traveling? i thought i was pretty much alone here in idaho.

On State Street and Glenwood in Boise Idaho there is a place that makes gluten free pizza called pizzalchik. Usually they like you to call in advance to make sure they have gluten free dough ready to go. They are very careful about cross contamination and make a good healthy gluten free pizza. They also make gluten free cheesecakes.

thanks!! the girls and i have appts. in boise on june 1st. it is the day after the twins turn 15, so we are hoping to do some birthday shopping. i'm sure they would love to have pizza.

I too will be visiting family in Boise this summer, so if I get the info correctly, it is Jake's Place in Meidian Idhao......? Any possibility of more definitive address? Also, is there a bakery in Boise area or someplace to buy ready made baked goods, ie bread so I don't have to haul stuff with me or buy ingredients and have to bake there. Thanx.

I would be heading to Cedar City Utah, but unfortunatley we had to cancel the trip. But I did get to go to a gluten free store in Vancouver, WA. It was fantastic!

I have heard of a CELIAC SUPPORT GROUP that meets at St Luke's in Meridian, ID. Does anyone have any info on this? Do you attend? When is the next meeting?

This is an old post but I recently found the store too. Its still there right next to the big red barn. Uncle Ron, sorry I can't answer your Q???. There is a store in downtown Nampa for some gluten free foods but I have never been there. Do you ever go to the Boise Co-Op? It has some things. Do you know of any other places in Treasure Valley?? I wish we had a Traders and a Whole Foods. :(

Christine if you are still around lets chat. I have a daughter 17 today :) and a daughter in Boise thats almost 20 and Christina is her name B) . Pizzalchik is in the phone book, 7330 W. State. Thanks for the info, I will be sure to tell my daughter :D She will love the cheesecake and a new place to eat with her college friends! I will for sure take my 17 yr old too!

Something else. I just called them and Pizzalchik has roasted chicken too. A 12" cheese gluten-free pizza is 10 bucks. Call several hours ahead of time to preorder the pizza. Not "fast food" ;) They still have cheesecake.

Wow, another Idahoan on the forum! Thats great, I'm mostly a lurker but have been to Jakes Place numerous times. Its great to have a store that you know everything is safe to eat in. Did you also know that just down the road (going west) is a restaurant that serves gluten free pizza and pasta? Its Louie's Italian Restaurant and its *really* good. They don't have a gluten free kitchen, but they are well aware of cross contamination issues and my mother and I have never had a problem there, they are very careful. Its not exactly cheap, but its yummy and you don't have to call ahead of time.

Wow, that's great. I will tell my daughter. She is only mildly allergic so that's perfect. Thanks :D My husband used to eat at Louie's years ago. I think there is one in Sun Valley but I have never been there. Where are you from?

I live in Emmett, its a small town so I have to do most of my shopping in Meridian/Boise. I guess you could say I'm pretty much asymptomatic when it comes to gluten so unless I eat it every day all day I can't tell I've gotten into something. My mom is very sensitive though and has eaten at Louie's a lot and has never had a problem. They even brought her out a new dessert on the house to try out for them so I know they are trying to enhance their gluten-free menu. Its really good food too, and its right on the menu that they can make almost anything gluten free. Louie's is one of the only places my whole family is able to eat at because we have some picky eaters! Red Robin is the other place we can all go since they make their fries gluten-free. Yum!

Born and raised in Caldwell and moved to Garden Valley 7 yrs ago. Been thru Emmett many times. Great info THANKS! I get my gluten-free stuff at the Boise Co-op. Have you ever been there? It is a bit cheaper than Jakes. But you have to look for it where as Jakes its all there right in front of you. My daughter usually eats at Chapala's but its not gluten-free. She just orders carefully. I called Pizzalchik. There web is Pizzalchik.com. They don't list gluten-free items on it though.

I do shop at the Co-Op once in awhile. I haven't lately just because we haven't been down in that area for awhile. Its such a toss up because Jake's is all gluten free but more expensive and the Co-Op is a bit cheaper and I get a discount there with my BSU Student card but the parking is horrible and its always packed inside. I'm not going to complain though, I'm just glad we have a few places to shop around here!

      I see it everyday on my feeds. They go out and buy gluten-free processed products and wonder why they can't heal their guts. I don't think they take it as a serious immune disease. They pick up things off the internet which is so far out in left field. Some days I would just like to scream. So much better when we had support groups and being able to teach...

I keep thinking that things in the medical community are improving, but a shocking number of people still post here who have already discovered gluten is their issue, and their doctors ordered a blood test and/or endoscopy for celiac disease, yet never mentioned that the protocol for such screening requires them to be eating...

Yes, probably is dose dependent if, by dose dependent you mean the amount of exposure to gluten. But damage rates and level of sensitivity also seem to depend on the genetic profile.       Have Tru Joy Sweets Choco Chews been discontinued??

      Help! My 5 year old daughter just stopped eating dairy and gluten due to her EoE and Celiac. Her favorite candy in the world is tootsie rolls. I did some research, and it sounds like these are the only options for finding something similar, but I can't find them anywhere to actually purchase. Have they been discontinued?? Does anyone have another recommendation...

I just had an EMA blood test because I haven't had one since my Doctor moved away.  Got test results today, doctor ordered a D3 vitamin test.  Now you know what  type of doctors we have.  Now I will have to pay for this test because she just tested my D3 end of December, and still have no idea about my EMA.

      Thank you for the kind words! I keep thinking that things in the medical community are improving, but a shocking number of people still post here who have already discovered gluten is their issue, and their doctors ordered a blood test and/or endoscopy for celiac disease, yet never mentioned that the protocol for such screening requires them to be eating gluten daily for weeks beforehand. Many have already gone gluten-free during their pre-screening period, thus their test results end up false negative, leaving them confused and sometimes untreated. It is sad that so few doctors attended your workshops, but it doesn't surprise me. It seems like the protocols for any type of screening should just pop up on their computer screens whenever any type of medical test is ordered, not just for celiac disease--such basic technological solutions could actually educate those in the medical community over time.

Those with both genes HLA-DQ2 and HLA-DQ8 seem to be more sensitive to minor amounts of gluten exposure than those with just one of those genes and those with only DQ2 seem to be more sensitive than those with only DQ8. But there are probably many factors that influence the damage rate to the villi as well as intensity of reaction to exposure. There is still a lot we don't know. One of the gray areas is in regard to those who are "silent" celiacs, i.e. those who seem to be asymptomatic or whose symptoms are so minor that they don't garner attention. When they get a small exposure (such as happens in cross contamination) and have no symptoms does that equate to no inflammation? We don't necessarily know. The "sensitive" celiac knows without a doubt, however, when they get exposure from cross contamination and the helps them know better what food products to avoid.
