Prayer Request

:( Hi, everybody.

Mamaw (Sande) emailed me that she was hospitalized with sudden major thyroid problems. Apparently, her thyroid suddenly became super-hyper, pumping out massive amounts of hormone that sent her heart into afib. I got the feeling from her that the doctors didn't seem to know what's causing this or what to do.

So please join me in some prayers on her behalf. Or post here if you have any clues on why a gluten-free celiac would suddenly develop this.

Thanks so much.

Sounds perhaps like a thyroid storm. If this is the case, she is exactly where she needs to be - in the hospital.

I will be sending positive vibes and prayers her way!

I will pray for her....hope she recovers soon.

If the thyroid suddenly produces large amounts of hormone its called "thyroid storm"....it can be life threatening so its good that shes in the hospital.

Does she have Graves Disease or was she on thyroid hormones? It can happen to people with Graves or people who take more hormone than their body requires.

After I had radioactive iodine treatment for Graves...."thyroid storm" was something I had to watch out for. My thyroid hormones did soar to dangerous levels...I was given some meds which controlled it...I never had a thyroid storm.

Heres some things that can cause it...

CAUSES OF THYROID STORM

Besides surgery, thyroid storm is triggered by radioactive iodine therapy, uncontrolled diabetes, emotional stress, abrupt withdrawal of antithyroid (ATD) medication, excessive palpation of the thyroid gland in hyperthyroid patients, thyroid hormone overdose, pulmonary thromboembolism, toxemia of pregnancy, labor, trauma, acute infection, severe drug reaction or myocardial infection

Thanks to all of you have prayed for me... PLEASE continue.....

Yes, I did go into a thyroid storm & ended up in ICU.... I have really bad reactions to drugs which continue to play out in my saga....

It appears they do not know what is exactly happening with my thyroid. Three - four years ago I was HYPO, now I'm off the charts HYPER.... I know it is not from Lymes or anything like that. It took days for the docs to find something that would help me settle down the A Fib from the thyroid.

Now , I'm on a beta-blocker ( LOpressor) , they tried betapace but I got a cover your body hive & itch reaction to that... & when I call to tell the doctor what was going on -- he stated that no one is that allergic to drugs!!!! I even had hives on the soles of my feet....

Next drug is Diovan (for bp). : for the thyroid is at first Tapazole.....then I suddenly just sneezing my head off, then I can't close or open my mouth ( swelling in ear , jaw & mouth... I again call the doctors.... nope can't be the drugs.....

I finallly convince the endo doc to take me off the tapazole.... Little but some relief.....The cardio doc puts me on coudamin ( Blood thinner) & endo doc tries PTU for the thyroid....

Three days or so of these drugs my hands, wrists to upper arms goes fire engine red, swollen & the very worst pain I have ever endured... I could not use my upper limbs for several days... so that meant someone had to feed me ( through a straw at first because I couldn't chew with my jaw being so sore) to wiping my pink little butt.. I was so embarrassed...

So after this they put me on predisone ( steroid) which I refused because I already knew I reacted to that..Well I feel like I sold my soul to the devil.. I took the steroid. It did get the swelling to go down but the pain lingers on... so another steroid round whick I'm finishing tonite....

Now I just had bloodwork to try to find out what is causing all this pain... My liver function is now very elevated.... so It could be the combo of meds, the thyroid itself, an infection or anyone's guess at this point...

This has been the most amount of time typing this ,that I have been able to use my hands at all...

all of this & we have booked Disney for a family vacation April 21st. It was supposed to be a family trip with the grandchildren & children from us.Now I'm not sure I will make-it.We have pre-paid everything there even the food & reservations for dining. Our fifth wheel is packed & ready to roll---wished I was....

I truly want to thank Fiddle -Faddle ( Alison) for posting a prayer request on my behalf. I again ask that those of you who believe in faith continue to pray for me at this time..

My faith has lead me thus far & I believe in the power of the almighty.

I will try to post as this continues on.....

blessings to all

mamaw

I hope things are improving for you. Are you home now?

You need a doctor like House on your case! (In fact, I think thyroid storm was mentioned on one of the House episodes last week...

Saw the first post & immediately thought thyroid storm. The nurse in me was ready to give info about it, but as I continued to read, it looks like you already have good info. So I did what I actually do best - PRAY. I will continue to pray for you & for the guidance of your caregivers.

God Bless,

Hi Everyone,

Here it is April 14 th already. I finally got use of my hands late last night. Who ever said Friday the 13th was bad!!!!

I actually feel sooooo much better but I'm very , very tired. Doctors still don't know what exactly happened to me but it appears the rotten steroids helped me..... I have little pain at present just tired. Doctors said again this could be the high meds they have me on. I haven't heard back from my second bwork with the elevated liver function as yet. Hopefully on Tues.

At this point we have decided not to waste our money & we are going to FLORIDA!!!!!!YEAH, I'm ready for some happy times right now! We are going to take our time & not push things.. I know I can not do a full day of disney without resting. My grandkids understand & they too said they will take a rest with me.. I'm so proud of them for being willing to rest a bit so I can enjoy their pleasure of disney. Ages 9 & 6.....

We have booked all our gluten-free dining so I won't have to worry about cooking....

I think when I get back the doctors will decide to do the RAI on my thyroid. They now will not let me have the thyroid surgery. I'm still concerned about the RAI. I can't help but ponder what will happen to me once they do that...... no going back after that....If only I wasn't sooo sensitive to drugs....

If you all wouldn't mind I would love to have your continued prayers....

Oh I think someone asked what I ate in the hospital.... Not much!!! egg, yogurt, tea for breakfast. ( gluten-free toast that was so hard it could have put out a window) (couldn't even bite into it!!! Lunch was tossed salad. Supper: tossed salad, grilled chicken breast, ice cream.... That is my menu for the total stay... Hubby brought in fruit.....our hospital just doesn't have it yet on the gluten-free diet. I hope (when I'm better) to meet with the dietary staff & let them know there are very good breads available besides the cardboard ,year long shelf life ones...

Again THANK YOU< THANK YOU for the support......

Blessings to one & all.

Glad to hear you are better; I was really worried about you.

Have you talked with Rachel--24 about thyroid stuff? She had the RAI, I think.

Under the circumstances, your decision to have the testing done on day 14 sounds very reasonable. But I think by now you know for certain that you either have celiac disease or NCGS and either way you absolutely need to eliminate gluten from your diet. I don't think you have to have an official diagnosis of celiac disease to leverage gluten free service in hospitals or institutional care and I'm guessing your physician would be willing to grant you a diagnosis of gluten sensitivity (NCGS) even if your celiac testing comes up negative. Also, you need to be aware that oats (even gluten free oats) is a common cross reactor in the celiac community. Oat protein (avenin) is similar to gluten. You might want to look at some other gluten free hot  breakfast cereal alternatives.

After the birth of my daughter nearly 6 years ago, my stools changed. They became thin if they happened to be solid (which was rare) but most of the time it was Bristol #6 (very loose and 6-8x a day). I was on various medications and put it down to that. A few years later I went on this strict "fruit and meat" diet where I just ate meat, fruit, and squash vegetables. I noticed my stools were suddenly formed, if a bit narrow. I knew then that the diarrhea was probably food related not medication related. I tried following the fodmap diet but honestly it was just too complicated, I just lived with pooping 8x a day and wondering how I'd ever get and keep a job once my children were in school.  This past December I got my yearly bloodwork and my triglycerides were high. I looked into Dr. William Davis (wheat belly author) and he recommended going off wheat and other grains. This is the first time in my life I was reading labels to make sure there was no wheat. Within 2 weeks, not only were my stools formed and firm but I was only pooping twice a day, beautiful formed Bristol #4.  Dr. Davis allows some legumes, so I went ahead and added red lentils and beans. Nervous that the diarrhea would come back if I had IBS-D. Not only did it not come back, it just made my stools even bigger and beautiful. Still formed just with a lot more width and bulk. I've also been eating a lot of plant food like tofu, mushrooms, bell peppers, hummus etc which I thought was the cause of my diarrhea before and still, my stools are formed. In January I ran a genetics test because I knew you had to have the genes for celiac. The report came back with  DQ 2.2 plus other markers that I guess are necessary in order for it to be possible to have celiac. Apparently DQ 2.2 is the "rarer" kind but based on my report it's genetically possible for me to have celiac.  I know the next step is to bring gluten back so I can get testing but I am just not wanting to do that. After suffering with diarrhea for years I can't bring myself to do it right now. So that is where I am!

learned I had a high PTH level in 2022 suspected to be due to low vit D  got my vit D level up a bit but still have high PTH   I am 70 yrs old (today in fact) I am looking for someone who also has hyperparathyroidism that might be caused by malabsorption

I am on day 13 of eating gluten  and have decided to have the celiac panel done tomorrow instead of Wed. (and instead of extending it a few more weeks) because I am SO incredibly sick. I have almost no appetite and am not able to consume the required daily intake of calcium to try to keep up with the loss of calcium from the high parathyroid hormone and/or the renal calcium leak.    I have spent the past 15 years working hard to improve my health. I lost 50lbs, got off handfuls of medications, lowered my cholesterol to enviable levels, and in spite of having end stage osteoarthritis in both knees, with a good diet and keeping active I have NO pain in those joints- til now.  Almost all of my joints hurt now I feel like someone has repeatedly punched me all over my torso- even my ribs hurt- I have nausea, gas, bloating, headache, mood swings, irritability, horrid flatulence (afraid to leave the house or be in any enclosed spaces with other people- the smell would knock them off their feet) I was so sure that I wanted a firm diagnosis but now- I'm asking myself is THIS worth it? esp over the past 2 yrs I have been feeling better and better the more I adjusted my diet to exclude highly refined grains and processed foods. I didn't purposely avoid gluten, but it just happened that not eating gluten has made me feel better.   I don't know what I would have to gain by getting a definitive diagnosis. I think possibly the only advantage to a DX would be that I could insist on gluten-free foods in settings where I am unable to have access to foods of my choice (hospital, rehab, nursing home)  and maybe having a medical reason to see a dietician?   please let me know if it's reasonable to just go back to the way I was eating.  Actually I do plan to buy certified gluten-free oats as that is the only grain I consume (and really like) so there will be some minor tweaks I hope and pray that I heal quickly from any possible damage that may have been done from 13 days of eating gluten.

So I've been dealing with chasing the name celiac because of my body actively dealing with health issues related to celiac though not eating. Diagnosed in 1994 before foods eliminated from diet. After 25 years with former pcp I googled celiac specialist and she wasn't because of what ive been through. I wanted my results to be sent to my pcp but nothing was sent.I have email copies.I did one zoom call with np with team member from celiac specialist in Nov 2025 and she asked me why I wanted to know why I wanted the celiac diagnosis so bad, I sad I don't, its my life and I need revalidaion because its affecting me.KB stated well it shows you are.I asked then why am I going through all this.I was labeled unruly. Its been a celiac circus and medical has caused anxiety and depression no fault to my own other than being born with bad genetics. How is it legal for medical professionals to gaslight patients that are with an ailment coming for help to be downplayed? KB put in my records that she personally spent 120min with me and I think the zoom call was discussing celiac 80 min ONE ZOOM call.SHE is responsible for not explaining to my pcp about celiac disease am I right?
