Popcorn Got Me Bad!

I went through the whole process of reading the big tubs and labels at my local Target to see if I could eat the popcorn and it was fine. No gluten. I ate it no problem several times. Until today... they must have changed formulas of seasoning or something because it got me.

Vomiting and horrible pain in my gut all day long. Sheer misery.

Seriously, do I have to read the big tubs and labels every stinkin time?????? Frustrating.

how frustrating! I've never taken a chance with popcorn because, well, I can't have corn.

Hope you've taken some time off to relax and nurture the body, things will look up in time :) hang in there

Hope you feel better soon.

The age old question- stick with a bland diet or venture out and risk getting zapped if you let your guard down for one minute.

SO annoying.

Perhaps we can get a law passed that companies have to label their products as to when the formulas/ outside vendors were last changed. Wouldn't that be lovely?

We just gave in and bought an air popper for the popcorn. When you make it from scratch, you know exactly what goes in it. But that's mostly because I'm gluten-free/CF ... it's hard to find dairy-free microwave popcorn, and it's insanely expensive. The air popper was only $20 or so.

Man, that stinks! Hope you feel better soon.

Yup! Air popper is great. The popcorn is always safe and I can melt some soy-free, dairy-free "butter" to put on top of it. To me, it tastes better than the microwave popcorn, especially since it's physically impossible for me to burn it.

Home popped is so much better. Try it this way:

Put a little oil (whatever kind you handle best) and three kernels of popcorn in a heavy bottomed pan. Turn the heat to high. When those three have popped, add enough kernels to cover the bottom of the pan. Put the top on and shake until the popping stops. Then add whatever seasoning you like. I use melted butter and salt.

ive never been able to handle popcorn.. i realized this as a kid- before i ever tried any diet or knew anything about health. popcorn kills me- it's like throwing a whole wheelbarrow of rocks down my stomach... it's worse than a couple of pears. :(

Yup, me too! Years before I was diagnosed I had to give up popcorn; my theory is it has something to do with those hulls irritating the intestines. Now I'm unfortunately grain-free altogether... sigh. Hope you feel better soon sandsurf!

That's exactly what I do! I have that Earth Balance stuff ... I actually really like it, and it melts really well like natural butter. It's tasty, and I can add salt and flavorings however I like. I probably make it into a really unhealthy snack (I love my "butter" by the half-cup rather than by the tablespoon ... )

I eat out A LOT and I rarely get glutened. I'm very sensitive too. I'm just careful about where I eat out and what I eat there. But I'm going to give up on popcorn at Target. Not good enough to be worth it. My daughter was eating it. I was hungry. That sort of thing. Next time I'll stay hungry or bring a snack.

I learned the hard way that I have to read every label, every time. But just a thought... Stomach flu has been going around here in WA. Daughter had it and then I did. Could be you have that and not really a gluten problem.

Could you be allergic to corn (bummer if you are)? I agree about the air popper but also make sure you're not allergic. I'm finding out that I'm allergic to things that I wasn't before my Celiac and Ulcer diagnosis.

Unfortunately for us we seem to have to read labels every time we go shopping. Hang in there and know you're not alone!

Sorry the microwave popcorn got you! I do check the labels of processed things pretty much everytime. It's time consuming, but it's better than getting sick or buying something and realizing you can't eat it after you get it home.

This is what I do too! I use olive oil for mine. For an extra special treat you can make kettle corn this way too. Just add about a tablespoon of sugar to the oil as it heats up (before putting in the kernals). You have to monitor it closely and shake a lot to make sure it doesn't burn, but if you do it right you have caremel corn. Dump it out of the pan at soon as you don't hear much popping and sprinkle with some kosher salt. Yum.

Well I posted another thread but I'll update here. I have a bladder infection that went into my kidneys because I did not go to the doc, since I thought I was glutened!!!

I had vomiting, D, bloating and gut pain. All gluten symptoms. UGH.

So sorry to hear that. Rest up and drink a lot of fluids. Have you seen your doctor and gotten on antibiotics? I hate taking them but I expect I will be if my blood work for the ulcer shows H-Pylori.

Sending you healing thoughts and positive energy.

For those living in New Jersey, I just got off of the phone with Shoprite. Their Certified Organic Butter flavored microwave popcorn is both gluten and soy free. I'm doing the happy dance!

Target popcorn just is not safe. Don't know why because the labels seem to indicate it is safe. My son and I BOTH get very sick eating popcorn from Target :o

larry mac Enthusiast

That's wierd. I've never noticed any gluten ingredients in microwave popcorn. I've eaten tons of it before and since I was diagnosed. Sometimes it is a little heavy on my stomach, but that's probably because I buy the movie theater, or extra butter kind (usually Pop Secret, it's good and it's cheap). Then I only pop it about 2/3 full so it's real buttery and salty, then I pour about 1/4 cup of melted real butter on it.

I like my popcorn buttery!

best regards, lm

Wolicki Enthusiast

Yeah, I can eat almost anykind of micro corn, or air popped. But there's something in the Target popcorn hiding. All my celiac friends here have the same issue, so it's gotta be hidden gluten.

I gave in & had just a handful of popcorn at the show two weeks ago. Was I ever sorry! Three days of gas, bloating & bathroom time. Not doing that again!

bridgetm Enthusiast

I don't eat popcorn often now (I'm okay with corn but the popcorn is a little too rough on my stomach sometimes) but when I do I always get Orville Redenbacher's kettle corn. Most of that line is safe, but I have trouble with butter and all the other flavors so sweet & salty is the way to go.

If you live in the Midwest, try Angie's Kettle Corn. They only make popcorn and it's an allergen free facility. It's made in Mankato and is really easy to find throughout MN, but they recently went national. Good stuff!!! Sometimes my mom and I will pick up a bag on the way to or from campus. It's a 100 mile trip one-way, but the bag is usually empty long before then.

I'm so sorry! I was telling my husband that I think I might have a UTI on top of the Celiac, ulcer and IBS. Trouble is we moved to a new state in June and it's literally taken me since then to get new doctors. I see a new GI Thursday (the one I saw when we first moved was not supportive and I had to fight for my capsule endoscopy even though my old GI in NJ wanted me to have it as soon as I moved). I don't have an appointment with my new Family Practitioner until February 3rd so I'm thinking of seeing if I can bring a sample to the GI on Thursday (I brought one in to my new GI months ago and he threw it out).

I hope you feel better soon!!!!

There is much helpful 'truth' posted on this forum. Truths about Celiac Disease are based on scientific research and people's experience. Celiac disease is inherited. There are 2 main Celiac 'genes' but they are variations of one gene called HLa - DQ What is inherited when a person inherits one or both of the DQ2 or the DQ8 is a predisposition to develop celiac disease after exposure to a environmental trigger. These 2 versions of the DQ gene are useful in diagnosing  celiac disease but there are about 25 other genes that are known to influence celiac disease so this food intolerance is a multigenic autoimmune disease. So with so many genes involved and each person inheriting a different array of these other genes one person's symptoms may be different than another's symptoms.  so many of these other genes.  I don't think that much research on these other genes as yet. So first I wrote something that seem to tie together celiac disease and migraines.  Then you posted that you had migraines and since you went gluten free they only come back when you are glutened. Then Scott showed an article that reported no connection between migraines and celiac disease, Then Trents wrote that it was possible that celiacs had more migraines  and some believed there was a causal effect. You are each telling the truth as you know it or experienced it.

Another annoying thing about trying to figure this Celiac life out is reading all of the labels and considering every choice. I shop at Aldi every week and have been for years. I was just officially diagnosed Celiac a couple weeks ago this October after my endoscopy. I've been encouraged by my local Aldi in that they have a lot of gluten free products and clearly labeled foods. I usually buy Milagro corn tortillas because they are cheap and are certified. However, I bought a package of Aldi's Pueblo Lindo Yellow Corn Tortillas without looking too closely (I was assuming they were fine... assuming never gets us anywhere good lol) it doesn't list any wheat products and doesn't say it was processed in a facility with wheat. It has a label that it's lactose free (hello, what?? When has dairy ever been in a tortilla?) Just, ugh. If they can add that label then why can't they just say something is gluten free or not? I did eat some of the tortillas and didn't notice any symptoms but I'm just not sure if it's safe. So I'll probably have to let my family eat them and stick with Milagro. There is way too much uncertainty with this but I guess you just have to stick with the clearly labeled products? I am still learning!

Thank you all for sharing your experiences! And I am very thankful for that Thanksgiving article, Scott! I will look into it more as I plan my little dinner to bring with on the Holiday I'm also glad a lot of research has been done for Celiac. There's still a lot to learn and discover. And everyone has different symptoms. For me, I get a bad headache right away after eating gluten. Reoccurring migraines and visual disturbances were actually what got my PCP to order a Celiac Panel. I'm glad he did! I feel like when the inflammation hits my body it targets my head, gut, and lower back. I'm still figuring things out but that's what I've noticed after eating gluten! I have been eating gluten-free for almost two months now and haven't had such severe symptoms. I ate a couple accidents along the way but I'm doing a lot better
    • trents
@Mari, did you read that second article that Scott linked? It is the most recently date one. "Researchers comparing rates of headaches, including migraines, among celiac patients and a healthy control group showed that celiac subjects experienced higher rates of headaches than control subjects, with the greatest rates of migraines found in celiac women.  Additionally, celiacs had higher rates of migraine than control subjects, especially in women. In fact, four out of five women with celiac disease suffered from migraines, and without aura nearly three-quarters of the time."
    • Mari
As far as I know and I have made severalonline searches, celiac disease disease has not been recognized as a cause of migraines or any eye problems. What I wrote must have been confusing.
