  1. I cannot understand how any doctor who takes five seconds to *THINK* about what the test is testing for fails to understand that a test on a gluten free diet will come back negative regardless of celiac status. /facepalm!
  2. Cloth diapers go in the washing machine, and if I'm confident of the poop getting cleaned, then ditto for gluten.
  3. As itchy said - it's a dermatological reaction to gluten. Specifically, IgA deposits in the skin that cause the rash/itch.
  4. UNTREATED celiac disease is linked to fertility issues (particularly miscarriage, as the antibodies a celiac produces against her own intestines attacks the placenta as well). Once on a gluten free diet, with any nutrient deficiencies cleared up, and maintaining a healthy diet anyway, it's not thought to be an issue. (As in, the gluten free diet does not...
  5. soap, water, and elbow grease.
  6. You might also try acupuncture. I did it through my whole pregnancy for a few things, and it totally helped. Good luck; I'll keep my fingers crossed it subsides soon.
  7. Bottled water is a waste of money, for the most part. Buy a filter and use reusable bottles - cheaper and sometimes better quality. (I will note, we bought a reverse osmosis system now that we have a baby, as I have no desire give her fluoridated water*. The taste off of that thing is GREAT!) (*I will have the fluoridated water discussion, but not...
  8. We did Hawaii (specifically, Kawaii) for our honeymoon. We've done it since I was Gluten-free Casein-free as well. We've always stayed in B&B's, so we can cook a lot of our own food, and there are lots of restaurants on many of the islands that can cater to you. (Kenlove on here can offer recommendations as well. )
  9. I had a craving for BLTs during my pregnancy. I usually don't really like them, but I had two (on Udi's bread) one week in my first trimester. They were fabulous. And I didn't want any more! WACKY!
  10. My husband has kept a few of his items - Cheerios, granola bars, regular oatmeal, bread on occasion - but everything else in the house is gluten free. I'm never going to cook a bunch of special meals when one can satisfy everyone, so he eats gluten free with me when we're home and eating together. If we go out, he generally gets whatever he wants, but he...
  11. Little (and early) babies need breastmilk even more! If you want specific advice on breastfeeding this new one (not as it relates to celiac) I would STRONGLY encourage you to find a doctor who is a member of the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine. Most docs (even pediatricians, and certainly OBs) don't know very much at all. If you don't expect to have...
  12. Congrats! That IS something to celebrate!
  13. Hug your doctor for me! That he won't needlessly make her do something that you have already demonstrated makes her feel worse is FABULOUS! Smart guy!
  14. There generally aren't facilities that ONLY PACKAGE LENTILS. Grains are small, they get places. Cleaning practices help, but unless you ban wheat from the whole facility, the equipment that harvests it, and everything else along the line, there's contamination risk. And if you want all the separate equipment, be prepared to spend about four times as much...
  15. Actually, that's why I asked location - in some places, the chain stores carry some of the basic grain free options. My local Petco and Petsmart carry Wellness CORE and Natural Balance LID. Petco also has one or two other ones, iirc. (But I do happen to go to a specialty store for some other ones - Acana is my dog's favorite ATM.) ~Tiffany
  16. Totally depends on what you have near you. Where are you located?
  17. some compounding pharmacies can get you domperidone, and they can formulate it without lactose. you may have to call around and have it shipped, however.
  18. Btw, the baby doesn't need a bath when born. It will wash off the extraordinarily moisturizing vernix that baby is born with (even if in small amounts). Daphne didn't get any more than a pat-dry until she was five days old and at home. You can use olive oil, rather than J&J, for both lotion and Vaseline. No need for all the extra chemicals. (Though...
  19. Your doc screwed up the testing. Those IgA tests are useless without a total IgA to see if he's IgA deficient, and he should have done the IgG tests as well. I also recommend trying the diet. It will be a lot of work, especially as you try to move a picky eater to new foods, but it's worth it to find out if the dietary changes make a difference.
  20. It takes a while for your tastebuds to adapt and be able to taste the more subtle flavors in various foods if you've been overdoing it for a while (which a lot of our food does). The spices you use are only equally important as how you cook the food, and the details matter. Stir-fry, for instance, is fabulous for bringing out the natural flavor of vegetables...
  21. A lot of it will depend on what sort of gluten free food you're eating. Are you going to have a bowl of white rice with a stirfy of bell peppers, carrots, and zucchini? That's a lot of carbs (even if a lot of fiber) with very little protein and maybe not much fat if you don't add it and you'll probably feel crummy. Are you going to have lentil soup made...
  22. ok, try yoga instead. the philosophy aspect can help you shift thinking patterns as well. and really calling something cliche just because you hear it repeatedly is silly - especially if you're just doing that to overlook the validity of it. at this point, you "share stories" so often that it's like a dependence, and our responses, especially the ...
  23. I understand where you're coming from. As a scientist, I think our experiments need to be a little more complete, even if they are on ourselves. As a parent, that includes your kids. We all make decisions that are weight the best of the pros and cons, and - as with other things - that list is going to be different for every individual family. I hope...
  24. While that can certainly be a celiac response, since you are pregnant, it REALLY is important to rule out that it is not preterm labor. Please do go in to your doctor (or the ER, whichever is more appropriate now), and get evaluated. I'm not a fan of a lot of intereference in a pregnancy, but this is a good case for some!
  25. If the "I should have" thoughts are that often, and are interfering with your life and happiness, go see a counselor. That is what they are there for, to help you process things that are too big to process alone. Our culture is one of the rare (dare I say dumb) ones that thinks we should be able to handle everything ourselves. Fat lot of good it's doing...
