Sunmaid Golden Raisins

I keep hearing about gin soaked raisins. The People's Pharmacy on NPR was talking about them again this morning and they claim that for some reason they work for arthritis pain. The recipe calls for golden raisins and they think it might be something about the sulfites reacting with the juniper in the gin.

So anyway although the regular raisins are gluten-free, Sunmaid's website says the golden raisins are made in a facility that processes wheat. gluten-free Watchdog checked them out but I can't get the report because I'm not a subscriber. Anybody here had them? I really want to try this because the arthritis in my wrists is getting a lot worse and I need my hands!

I would eat them.

I have used them, with no problems....My husband and 3 or 4 friends have used them with the gin. IT DOES WORK. Good luck!

I would not eat them.  Nuts.com has CERTIFIED GLUTEN FREE golden raisins.  Why take the chance?

Please let us know if the gin and golden raisins help you.  Good luck!

Well I took the chance and have some soaking in Beefeater's right now. They have to soak for ten days and then you're supposed to eat nine raisins a day. Supposedly some time between two to eight weeks you're supposed to start seeing results. I will report back and let you all know.

Thanks!

Do they need to be refrigerated? Thanks for providing the 'recipe'. Would be great if it works so let us know. I hate gin but if it helps give some relief it is welll worth choking them down.

No refrigeation is necessary while they are soaking. They say just leave them on the counter covered with a paper towel so dust and stuff doesn't get into them. Most of the gin will evaporate and that's fine. After the ten days you can transfer them into a closed jar and either keep them in the fridge or in the cabinet.

I think I'm going to use the fridge because it's hot outside and cold ones will go down better. I don't like gin OR raisins but at this point I'm desperate. Heck, if GREEN BEANS (my least favorite food on the planet) helped I would eat them gladly!

Maybe you need to soak your stomach in gin first?

 I wish it would work with tequila soaked blueberries. Now THOSE I would really enjoy!

Raisins are just dried grapes. They do not need refrigeration. Gin does not need refrigeration, although chilling it improves the drinking pleasure ;) I can't imagine why these would need to be refrigerated, but it will do no harm.

As to whether it works, je ne sais pas.

Bartie....I eat SunMaid Golden Raisins with absolutely no problems and you all know how sensitive I am to gluten.  Made in a shared facility does not equal unsafe, as we know.  SunMaid is a reputable company that has been around for ages so eat them with pleasure!  ;)

Let us know how that goes, in case I ever start having arthritis symptoms. :)

Hello there! New to celiac community, although I have lots of family in it.  My two year old was just diagnosed with celiac disease based on symptoms and bloodwork.  symptoms (swollen belly, stomach hurting, gagging all the time, regular small vomit, fatigue, irritability, bum hurting, etc) she got tests at 18 months and her bloodwork was normal. She just got tested again at 2 1/2  because her symptoms were getting worse and these were her results :   Tissue Transglutaminase Ab, IgA 58.8 Unit/mL (High) Endomysial Antibody IgA Titer 1:5 titer (Abnormal)   Gliadin Antibody IgA < 1.0 Unit/mL Gliadin Antibody IgG 8.5 Unit/mL Immunoglobulin A 66 mg/dL Her regular pediatrician diagnosed her with celiac and told us to put her on the strict gluten free diet and that we wouldn’t do an endoscopy since it was so positive and she is so little (26lbs and two years old). I’m honestly happy with this decision, but my family is saying I should push and get an endoscopy for her. It just seems unnecessary and an endoscopy has its own risks that make me nervous. I’m certain she has celiac especially with it running in mine and my husbands family. We are now thinking of testing ourselves and our 5 year old as well.  anyways what would y’all recommend though? Should we ask for an endoscopy and a GI referral? (We are moving soon in 5 months so I think that’s part of why she didn’t refer us to GI)

This is really helpful  I had not considered sugar alcohols or inulin as triggers. Thanks for the practical baking tips too color coding and baking G F first makes a lot of sense. Thiamax (TTFD) plus a B-complex, and if you want benfotiamine, the Life Extension formula covers that at ~100 mg.

High fiber can definitely cause sudden GI distress especially if it’s a new addition but accidental gluten exposure can feel similar. Keeping a simple food/symptom log and introducing new gluten-free foods one at a time can really help you spot the pattern. sorry a bit confused so I should take my B complex along with Objective Nutrients Thiamax for TTFD but what about a Benfotiamine to take. The Life extensions contains Benfotiamine and Thiamine together or im confusing myself. I am trying to see if I take Thiamax what should I take for Benfotiamine. Thanks EDITING after further research I see ones water soluble ones fat soluble. So I guess 100MG as you suggested of Life Extension contains Benfotiamine and Thiamine Hydrochloride. and the Objective Nutrients Thiamax contains TTFD.     would work for me.

I put on over 12kg by eating protein with every meal, 3 to 5 times a day. Eggs, Chicken, Tuna, Turkey etc. I stay away from too much red meat as it can be inflammatory. Scott is correct. I've come across a bunch of Coeliac PT's on Tiktok and Instagram. They all say the same thing, the key is getting enough protein and consistency.
