I appreciate your openness. Our bodies/mind/spirit are not isolated from one another and when one is having problems the others often do as well. Traditional medicine tends to compartmentalize them and treat them individually. You asked my profession. I am retired from a long career in Christian ministry, first as a pastor and then for the last 20 or...

Butter is not pure fat. It is actually a lipoprotein. An allergy to milk would not be caused by lactose (the sugar in milk) but by the protein component. Allergies are reactions to proteins. Some people who think they are lactose intolerant may actually be casein intolerant.

Reaction to Pepcid Complete?
trents replied to catillus's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
It can take awhile to learn about the hidden sources of gluten in our food supply. Also, keep in mind that food companies can and do change their formulations from time to time without warning such that something that once did not contain gluten now does. You are relatively new at all this. Also, it typically takes around two years for the villi to heal completely... -
Reaction to Pepcid Complete?
trents replied to catillus's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
In view of the company's response, I would be more concerned about other causes for your heartburn than a potential issue with Pepcid complete such as a hiatal hernia or even (believe it or not) low stomach acid. Also things like SIBO should be looked at. Are you a coffee drinker? Certain medications, foods and beverages tend to cause the LES (Lower Esophageal... -

Ehlers danlos, POTS, Lipedema, and Celiac
trents replied to JustAchronic's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
You could have NCGS but I have a feeling you have other autoimmune problems going on that may be unrelated to gluten. -
Tapioca and peanut butter are both calorie dense and don't require much chewing. So, you do not have an official celiac disease dx yet since you say you have no auto-immune diagnosis. You may also have NCGS instead of celiac disease. May I ask your age? Are you getting regular exercise? Do you have good support from family and friends? Check...

It seems like levsin would produce the opposite effect of what you want to happen if you are constipated. Are you still consuming dairy?

Welcome to the forum, Amanda! You are not alone in this problem. We frequently have posters on this forum who report not being able to get the calories they need either because of many food intolerances/allergies or poor appetite. So, let me ask you some questions. 1. When you say you are allergic to potatoes, peppers and tomatoes, how does...

Ehlers danlos, POTS, Lipedema, and Celiac
trents replied to JustAchronic's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Some of your symptoms certainly could be tied to celiac disease. But a word of caution here. If you decide to have an endoscopy/biopsy to check for villi damage of the small bowel (the gold standard for dx celiac disease) you would need to go back to eating regular amounts of gluten for at least 2 weeks. And I hope you did not start eating gluten free prior... -
Undiagnosed Yet, Pre Testing Stages
trents replied to Mandie28's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you were off gluten for only two days before testing I doubt that would have had a significant impact on the results. Not sure what you are trying to say here, "NCGS is your sensitive to certain gluten not all of it." Gluten is gluten. It is found in wheat, barley and rye. A person with NCGS may have a threshold of sensitivity with regard to the... -
Hi From New Zealand
trents replied to JT-NZ's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
A couple of meals with gluten in them is not enough to ensure a valid celiac antibody test result. The guidelines for the antibody test is the daily consumption of gluten in the amount equivalent to two slices of wheat bread for 6-8 weeks leading up to the test. So if you have been significantly cutting back on gluten in recent weeks the test results... -
Celiac testing options
trents replied to Ali W's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Whatever doctor you see, make sure you clarify the pretest gluten challenge period. And keep in mind, even GI docs are not necessarily current on gluten related problems. Many of them, especially if they have been out of medical school for a number of years. What many on this forum have discovered is that you have to go armed with information, be assertive... -
Undiagnosed Yet, Pre Testing Stages
trents replied to Mandie28's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I wanted to straighten that out because the pop media has created a lot of confusion about gluten related medical conditions by their indiscriminate misuse of the terminology. And we have a lot of new members who need to get that clarified in order to understand what's going on. -
Celiac testing options
trents replied to Ali W's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
An endoscopy with biopsy of the small bowel lining is the gold standard test for celiac disease. The pre test gluten challenge is only 2 weeks for this but would need to be eating significant amounts of gluten daily, the equivalent of two slices of wheat bread. -
Undiagnosed Yet, Pre Testing Stages
trents replied to Mandie28's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I realize this is knit picking but I believe the term is not non celiac gluten intolerance but non celiac gluten sensitivity which is commonly abbreviated NCGS. -

importance or testing
trents replied to Donnaw61's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome to the forum, Donnaw61! Getting an official diagnosis is not necessary and I believe you know the answer anyway. An official diagnosis may have the advantage of doctors taking you seriously and not viewing your claim as simply another self-diagnosed not case, if you know what I mean. Many physicians still do not take celiac disease seriously... -
Test interpretation
trents replied to Caitlin P's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you stop and think about it, both the antibody test and the biopsy are looking for damage to the villi, just in different ways. If you go off gluten pre test then the damage stops and healing begins. Unfortunately, many physicians fail to caution their patients about not quitting gluten before the testing is complete. We get this same report from new... -
Test interpretation
trents replied to Caitlin P's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The official recommendations for the pre-testing gluten challenge are: For the blood antibody test: Daily consumption of an amount of gluten equivalent to 2 slices of wheat bread for 6-8 weeks. For the endoscopy/biopsy: Daily consumption of an amount of gluten equivalent to 2 slices of wheat bread for at least 2 weeks. I take it from... -
Test interpretation
trents replied to Caitlin P's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Whatever you do, don't start in on a gluten free diet until your testing is complete, regardless of whether it is the blood antibody testing or the endoscop/biopsy. It will likely invalidate the testing if your do. Continue to eat regular amounts of gluten until all testing for celiac disease is complete. -
Is An Official Diagnosis of DH Necessary?
trents replied to ilovermont's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Yes, I'm not sure it's worth it either. I don't suffer from DH but from reading the stories of those who do it seems to be misery. I can tell you that after years of living gluten free I no longer have any tolerance for it. If I get a significant gluten exposure I get violently ill. It would probably put me in the grave if I had to go back on gluten to get... -
Is An Official Diagnosis of DH Necessary?
trents replied to ilovermont's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Of course, getting an official diagnosis would require you to go back on regular amounts of gluten for 2 (intestinal biopsy) to 8 (antibody test) and that would be a huge deterrent. Although in the case of DH they might be able to do a dermal biopsy during an outbreak and prove that you have DH for which celiac disease is the only cause. Not sure how that... -
Is An Official Diagnosis of DH Necessary?
trents replied to ilovermont's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I can't disagree with your reasoning except that having an official diagnosis of celiac disease and DH might give you more leverage in medical care situations related to the effects of celiac disease and DH. If there is not an official diagnosis you might find resistance from many physicians in exploring issues related to your celiac disease/DH. Is there...
