Crazy Diet People, Part One
UPDATE: This post is part of Kelly the Kitchen Kop's Open Original Shared Link! Way back when, I had a vegan husband. He wasn't just any vegan, he was one of those vegans who actually didn't own a piece of leather, avoided drinking beer, and wouldn't use china because of the bone in it. I learned to cook vegan, pack food to other people's houses, and make polite excuses for his unconventional diet. When we got divorced, one of my favorite things was not having to explain. I relished being aLet The Liberation Begin
This blog is basically a mirror of the blog that Open Original Shared Link keep at Open Original Shared Link. You'll see a blitz of posts for a while as I get all our old posts transfered over here! We randomly post about what we're eating, the garden, and whatever else might come to mind. Because our family is on the GAPS diet and is 100% gluten-free, that's a bias! You can read about how we ended up making those dietary choices at Open Original Shared Link. Here's the first, about the busFrom: Celiac Diagnosed Just Today!
Shopping can be overwhelming so I always tell new celiacs to shop the outside of the store and stick to simple foods. Label-reading will take a little practice and research. It's easy to tell that a banana or a potato is gluten-free. I detour around the bakery section. I feel like an invisible cloud of gluten is hovering in the air. I mostly live on fruit and veggies (fresh or frozen without sauces), potatoes, rice, beans, meat, nuts, and eggs to cook. I often grab some rice cakes, MiFrom: Your Top Two Pieces Of Advice
1. You're going to get glutened occasionally no matter how careful you are. It's OK. Pick yourself up and keep going. 2. Don't worry about what others think. There will be people who say you are worrying too much about cross-contamination. You might meet celiacs or people who don't stick to the diet very well and say it's fine to cheat (it's not). You might have family members or friends who will try to guilt you into eating gluten-containing foods they have prepared. Be kind, be compasRecipe Sites!

All of their stuff is dairy and nut free, for those who need that. For me, I like nuts- the people and the food- because they add flavor and texture to life! Looking for a good gluten free bar for my daughter. We have tried different ones and so far we have not found one that she likes ...any suggestions?New Day
Took my daughter to the doctor's yesterday and all is going great It is such an awesome feeling to know that finally we are traveling down the right road. She has had 3 months of no symptoms... that is a miracle! I hope everyone has a New Day like she is.Gluten-Free Labeling and the FDA: We Are Watching (and so is Monty)
On May 4th, members of the national celiac and gluten intolerance community met in Washington, D.C., to urge the Food and Drug Administration to finalize gluten-free labeling rules, and to ask Congress to encourage and track FDA's progress. Our national community was remarkably successful in using its grass roots strength to organize together and participate in the democratic process as policy advocates. The May 4th event was led by a broad-based coalition, including nonprofit organizations, cFinally Feeling Better After.....
I am sitting here trying to decide how to start my first blog.... it is a little daunting.... I am not big on words and things to that nature but I am hoping that maybe someone will read this and it might help them. Well here goes....To the begining.... I will try to make this short and to the point. It started a litte over 4 years ago. Dear Newly Diagnosed Celiac, Gluten Free Living is a Journey... Try to remember-it's the rainy days that help us appreciate the sunny ones. Maybe reading gluten free books, blogs, or message boards could help validate your feelings and give you eating ideas. Sometimes, your mind will jump to plenty of excuses of why you can't or why the ideas seem unrealistic, but try to focus on the "can" and the "I'll try" attitude. May is recognized as the National Celiac Disease Awareness Month - Horray for May!! For a disease that affects about 1 in133 Americans that are commonly misdiagnosed, it only makes sense to have national awareness day. I have been diagnosed for about 10 years now and I have been so thrilled with how much the awareness of celiac disease has grown and how manufacturers, restaurants and schools are becoming aware of the need for a gluten free diet. I used to dread going out to social events orHealth Coaching
Whether you have a single food allergy or multiple, you probably have been to allergists, general practitioners, gastrointestinal (GI) physicians and the list of traditional doctors can be endless. Well, if you want to go holistic then, the individuals to see are chiropractors, acupuncturists, herbalists, naturopathic doctors or even a health coach. Now, a health coach has studied nutrition, diet and usually health science. They can assist you in building your very own personal food pyramid byThe Gluten Free Give Back: Food Banks
We’ve all heard of Oprah’s Big Give show from a few years ago. I am suggesting during this Celiac Disease Awareness Month to do a “Gluten Free Give Back”, as we take time to give back to this disease that has changed our lives so significantly. During this month I plan to do occasional postings on how we can give back to the gluten free community. This post is looking at food banks. We all are likely VERY possessive of our gluten free food– it’s so expensive why would we just GIVE it toHouse-Hunting Expedition: Gluten Free On The Go
My Marine was committed to a time-consuming motorcycle safety course all weekend (he has had a retro bike for a year that he isn't licensed to ride yet), so I packed up some Glutino pretzel sticks and crackers, Lara Bars (pb&j, peanut butter cookie), apples, Bunny Organic fruit snacks, and leftover Starburst jelly beans and jetted off to Atlanta. Going gluten-free is a hot topic among those embracing a more healthful diet in 2011. And new research estimates that gluten sensitivity may affect over 40% of the population. But for 3 million Americans, going gluten-free should be more than a lifestyle choice. Celiac Disease affects 1 in 133 Americans, yet 95% don't know they have it. May is National Celiac Disease Awareness Month and the Celiac Disease Foundation is celebrating 21 years of raising awareness. Our first Easter Sunday without gluten. Not as hard as one would think, but since Kaia is also allergic to dairy, latex, beef, cherries and soy, a lot of candy is already off limits so I just needed to refine my already dwindling list of safe candies. Growing up, the Easter Bunny never brought a lot of candy he always seemed to bring the one thing we were “dying” to have, so when it came time for the Easter Bunny to start visiting my little girl, it only seemed right to have a little candy andAllergy Season Is Here...
For some reason this time of year is tough for me. Trying to find a gluten-free allergy medication is tricky. Benadryl Children's Fast Melts used to be my favorite but finding them on the pharmacy shelf is difficult. Haven't been able to find them for months. Tried CVS brand but got a tummy ache. They contain sucralose which can cause symptoms in sensitive people. Also modified food starch can be tricky too. Magnesium sterate ?? Wonder if it can cause diarrhea. I see that the liquid Benadryl doeNeeding a "Heads Up" on Headaches
I am now collecting information, research, articles, professional papers, and especially, patient stories, for a new project. Many people with food sensitivities and with celiac disease suffer from headaches, or have family members who do. I would love to hear from anyone with an interesting headache "case history" they're be willing to share confidentially, and from any practitioners who have learned something valuable from treating patients for headaches. I never considered myself much of a beer drinker until I had to go on a gluten free diet, and it wasn't until that moment then that I realized how many beer choices I once had. Thankfully, I have found a couple brands of gluten free beer that I enjoy from time to time, but now that summer is quickly approaching, I have been keeping an eye out for a light version of a gluten free beer. After many trips to my local stores, I just assumed that it wasn't possible to make a low calorie gluten free-

Yes, I have one of the older models and have tested many products with it. For me it seems like a valuable tool and I have used it to test foods that I eat regularly, which are naturally gluten-free, for example salsa, refried beans, etc.

Has anyone tried the NIMA gluten detector? I'm seriously thinking of investing in one. I haven't eaten out at a restaurant since my late diagnosis 4 years ago (I'm 55 in March) Any information would be greatly appreciated
