Thank you to all who participate! This is for my first grade twins science project. It will be on display and will hopefully make those who view it aware. If you are comfortable please list specific symptoms under the different categories. I am not using names, just going to compile the data and report it as graphs. It's a first grade project so it will be something that my six year olds will be presenting. Thanks again to all who participate!

I started out with extreme tachycardia. I was in the emergency room twice with a heart rate over 180. I also had extreme fatigue and later came the unrelenting reflux. I saw my PCP to many times to count. I then found an endocrinologist since I didn't think my PCP was managing my hashimoto's well. Through my endo it was discovered that I didn't convert my T4 meds well so I was started on T3 meds in addition to my T4. She also did full iron tests and tested my ferritin levels. The were rock bottom. I saw her exclusively every 3-4 months for the next 1 1/2 years for my low ferritin and thyroid. I wasn't able to tolerate iron supplements due to the reflux. I decided to research on the internet hashimoto's disease/low ferritin/iron deficiency and that's what lead me to celiac. My endo is the one that ran the test for me. When it came back positive I went to a gastroenterologist for an EGD and biopsy.

question # 4: D (three)

question #5: B (2 to 4 weeks) My reflux was the first thing to go!!

I debated filling out this survey because from what I've read on this forum, my case is a bit of an anomaly. I went from perfectly healthly, to deathly ill with C.Difficile, to Celiac Diagnosis, to healthy again (though perhaps not perfectly!) within about 4 months. I consider myself to be VERY lucky.

Although I went to a very well known celiac doctor it was 4 months after I started the gluten-free diet. So my testing was negative. But a doctor didn't figure it out for me, my sister did. One of the doctors I went to said I was fine, and had the best HDL/LDL cholesterol scores they had seen. Probably because I wasn't absorbing fats due to gut inflammation. The pain in my gut didn't give him a clue.

It depends on how you look at it, I've seen a psych dr for the last 4 years, I saw my regular dr about neuropathy in my wrist/hands, who refered my to a neurologist, I moved and saw my current primary/gi dr who somewhat tested my for celiac, and an allergist to test for food allergies. So that is 5. However, I saw the first 3 dr's before I had considered celiac, it just seemed that I was unlucky health wise. So I only saw 2 dr's once I figured out gluten was the cause. I don't know which number is more accurate.

4. Too many to count during 30 years of illness and resulting chronic pain. BUT I FIGURED IT OUT MYSELF.

I have so many symptoms still to resolve (and it would take some time to list them all but examples that your survey did not list: hair loss, burning sensations, bone/joint pain) and I am 10 months gluten free. I expect it will take me several years. My doctor told me he has never seen celiac manifest itself as it did in me. I told him he should come on here and read some people's signature lines of symptoms if he wants a real education.

Your survey is very interesting and I am glad to see that Celiac awareness is beginning as early as the first grade! :)

I agree completely. Too bad they don't do that maybe then so many of us wouldn't be labeled hypochodriacs! Plus they could learn what they need to tell their patients to keep them safe rather than just saying 'don't eat gluten, bye'.

question #4 - E - no doctors; I have many diagnosed relatives so when I started having frequent GI symptoms I went gluten-free and got better. I knew better (from my family) than to trust doctors on this one.

I answered Other under symptoms because mine (anemia, weight loss) wasn't listed.

4) I went to 2 specialists - the first one diagnosed me with cancer!

5) It took about 9 months for my iron levels and weight to come back up. It took 18 months to get my Celiac Panel bloodwork numbers back to nearly normal. (still working on that one!)

4) - Lost count. I remember about 12 years ago being given an epi pen because they thought I had an allergy to MSG

5) First day! One of my symptoms was severe GERD which I was medicated for for years. Removing gluten has meant I have never had GERD medication since - that was almost a year ago!

One of my other symptoms is Intussusception, I had it 3 times before going gluten free and I had no idea what was causing it. Since going gluten free I've had it twice and it has been the only two times I ingested gluten - so I know now that is exactly what was causing it.

Thank you everyone for the responses so far! I hope they keep coming! If you know of anyone who may want to help out please pass the link along. I am trying to spread awareness and educate others as much as I can. I honestly thought I was dying and that I would not live to see my kids grow up before I figured out what was going on with me. I was having arrythmias, I had no energy at all, all the muscles in my body were in constant spasm - even my tongue hurt! My muscles were twitching constantly - doctors were useless. Thyroid problems, liver damage, etc. They either dismissed it as fibromyalgia or were looking for some rare disease. After just 10 1/2 days things started to turn around. I've only been gluten free since October 4th, and one month ago today is when I started to feel the cloud lift. My kids do not have celiac, but 2 of them carry the same HLA DQ8 gene as I. Probably not a coincidence that they are my 2 ADD kids. They've been gluten free for one week and are already telling me how much better they feel. I want to reach however many people I can because had someone told me about gluten it would have saved me from a lot of physical damage and distress, and my kids years of suffering from ADD. Since it is science fair time, I thought this would be a great opportunity to spread awareness and educate kids. Thanks to everyone who participates!

Your experience is both shocking and critically important for the community to hear, underscoring the terrifying reality that cross-contamination can extend into the most unexpected and invasive medical devices. It is absolutely devastating that you had to endure six months of sickness and ultimately sustain permanent vision loss because a doctor dismissed your legitimate, life-altering condition. Your relentless research and advocacy, from discovering the gluten in MMA acrylic to finding a compassionate prosthodontist, is a testament to your strength in a system that often fails celiac patients. While the scientific and medical consensus is that gluten cannot be absorbed through the skin or eyes (as the molecules are too large to pass through these barriers), your story highlights a terrifying gray area: what about a substance *permanently implanted inside the body*, where it could potentially shed microparticles or cause a localized immune reaction? Your powerful warning about acrylic lenses and the drastic difference with the silicone alternative is invaluable information. Thank you for sharing your harrowing journey and the specific, severe neurological symptoms you endure; it is a stark reminder that celiac is a systemic disease, and your advocacy is undoubtedly saving others from similar trauma.

I am so sorry you're going through this bad experience--it's difficult when your own lived reality of cause and effect is dismissed by the very professionals meant to help you. You are absolutely right—your violent physical reactions are not "what you think," but undeniable data points, and it's a form of medical gaslighting to be told otherwise, especially when you have a positive HLA-DQ2 gene and a clear clinical picture. Since your current "celiac specialist" is not addressing the core issue or your related conditions like SIBO and chronic fatigue, it may be time for a strategic pivot. Instead of trying to "reprove" your celiac disease to unwilling ears, consider seeking out a new gastroenterologist or functional medicine doctor, and frame the conversation around managing the complications of a confirmed gluten-free diet for celiac disease. Go in and say, "I have celiac disease, am strictly gluten-free, but I am still suffering from these specific complications: SIBO, chronic fatigue, dermatological issues, and high blood pressure linked to pain. I need a partner to help me address these related conditions." This shifts the focus from a debate about your diagnosis to a collaborative plan for your current suffering, which is the help you truly need and deserve to work toward bouncing back.

Hello, no I had to have them re done and then used a liner over the top.  Many dentists are not aware of the celiac effects.  Best of luck.   There is other material, yet, very expensive.

He is not just a psychiatrist.  He is also a neuroscientist.  And yes, I have already read those studies.   I agree with benfotiamine.  This is short term while glutened/inflammation occurs.  As I had already mentioned, these symptoms no longer exist when this phase passes.  And yes, I know that celiac is a disease of malnutrition.  We are working with a naturopath.
