  1. I had lost a lot of weight when I was sick and didn't know what was going on. In a matter of few months I started gaining it back with all the gluten free replacement foods. They usually have more calories than their gluten comparison and the bread is smaller ! When I got around 145 pounds (I am 5'4) I decided to ditch the goodies and eat fresh foods...
  2. I have problems with Frito's corn chips as well but so does my husband who is not celiac. I think they are just too greasy and heavy?? Notice how your fingers are kinda oily after eating a bunch? They are very hard to eat just one so I stay away from them.
  3. I am also Soy intolerant and get the red hive type rash on my face, especially around my mouth. I avoid all soy protein, vegetable oil (if that's all it says without giving you a source), guar gum (for me, I guess its too related to soy being a legume, it sets me off everytime), and soybean oil. I can use soy lecithin in small amounts such as in chocolate...
  4. A few weeks gluten free should start giving your daughter an answer, although it can take longer to heal completely. My 21 year old daughter is also gluten free. She did a blood test that was negative (mine was too) but since i have a positive biopsy and both DQ 8 and DQ 2 (which means I passed at least one to her) she decided not to test further and just...
  5. I remember in my 30's I did low carb and swore it cured my IBS Actually, my G.I. Dr. Lewey told me that he can't prove it but suspects that being on a strict low carb diet then returning to a regular diet can trigger celiac genes to turn on. Just a theory of his.
  6. Many times the mini versions are made differently. I got bit one Christmas with the reeses bell candies . I bought the regular sized Cadbury egg and cut it in half and shared it with my daughter who is also celiac. Neither of us had a problem. I like at least one per season. When I was a teenager, I ate tons of them, now just too rich.
  7. this is a fantastic forum board mostly for microscopic colitis but other forms are discussed with very caring and helpful people and doctors. More than the majority are on a either a gluten free/dairy and soy free or a combo of the three diet and find it very helpful in reducing their symptoms. Open Original Shared Link
  8. I agree with Larry Mac on trying the Betty Crocker one's. There's very little ingredients to them and they are very tasty! I have a problem with BRM not because of xantham (wondered about xantham too but wasn't the culprit) but because my digestive system can't handle the garbanzo and fava beans that they tend to use in many of their mixes. Makes me feel...
  9. Hi David, it took me about 1 1/2 years to finally feel better. For me it was not knowing soy was also an issue that made my healing time longer. It is common for some Celiac patients to also have problems with dairy (often times temporarily)and soy according to my G.I. so if you don't see some improvement you may want to consider eliminating these two for...
  10. You are so welcome! This forum is how I survived when I was first diagnosed and there are so many wonderful people here who care and want to help you through it. I remember Lisa telling me that the gluten free diet has a huge learning curve and it is VERY steep. Boy was she right! I made plenty of mistakes such as reese's peanut butter bells at christmas...
  11. ot tigercat- love your avatar! Such a sweet little face! My grandma always had dachshunds, so cute!
  12. I love to smell real gluten bread when my husband gets it fresh at a restaurant, and that is just enough for me now and then will happily eat my gluten free meal. I've become much more relaxed now that I've been at this for over two years but still very careful with cross contamination. I agree that loose flour in the air is not good though, I went into...
  13. It could be either. Lactose intolerance usually happens within the first few hours of ingesting dairy. My brother in law who is casein intolerant usually gets symptoms the next day but everyone is different. Your doctor can run a lactose intolerance test. Also keep in mind that unfortunately there can be false negatives with celiac testing (my blood work...
  14. Good thread! I love the fact that I know longer eat processed foods anymore and cook everything from scratch. My hubby and I have found since my diagnoses 2 years ago that we enjoy cooking together! I also love having clear skin and healthy fingernails that actually grow!
  15. Not sure on this. Others may know more about casein. I just know that it is in all dairy and higher concentrations in harder cheeses. My brother in law who is celiac, had been casein free for over 4 years and is now adding back in small amounts of hard cheeses and milk in recipes only and is doing fine with that, so maybe not a forever thing. Wish I could...
  16. My GI says he likes to see his celiac patients once a year. I think its a good idea because vitamin deficiencies sneak in there without you realizing it ect. If your regular doctor knows all about celiac and runs all the tests that a GI specializing in celiac would then that would be okay too.
  17. Thanks Lisa, awesome article!
  18. I was able to add back in dairy after a little over a year. I am 44 so that have something to do with it also. I still can't drink a glass of milk but can use it in recipes and in my oatmeal. I can eat all cheese but cottage cheese is still too much lactose. I can do about a half cup of real ice cream. I only have a problem with lactose which is common...
  19. what a bummer about Sunflower!! As a fellow restaurant owner (fine dining) it makes me sad that the economy is so hard on us! I will try 4580 next time!
  20. my daughter goes to school there. My favorites are Sunflower and Laudisio. Both are a little pricey but so very worth it. I've been wanting to go to Jax Fish house. It is Chef owned and I've heard outstanding seafood and gluten free friendly! Hoping to try it the next time I go visit her or to bring her home. Enjoy Boulder, it is a beautiful city!
  21. Thanks for posting this Purple. Although Lipton onion mix is gluten free it does contain soy (which I can't have) and other unnecessary ingredients. I would rather make from scratch whenever possible.
  22. Great article! Glad to see major players such as Stanford and Dr. Peter Green involved!
  23. You've gotten lots of good info. Just wanted to mention that the dairy could be only temporary. Soy is an issue for a lot of us but not all, so hopefully you can add that back in later as well. The best thing to do in the beginning is to eat as natural as possible such as fresh veggies, fruits, and proteins. Once your on your way to healing you may be...
  24. I've been in your shoes Joyce, which is why I am a big advocate for doing all the testing possible while still eating gluten so that you will never doubt it in the future. Some can self diagnose and never look back, I am not one of those. I did the gluten challenge after being gluten free 1 1/2 years. I could only do it for about a month in a half because...
