I have to get serious for a moment.

I missed what went on with the Glutenease thread and a lot of these posts are going over my head, and maybe I am reading them wrong?

I usually don't say anything or get involved with the different disagreements that go on on this board, but in this case I feel I need to.

I happen to be one who got very sick from a vaccination I had later in life and my health and my life has suffered greatly because of it. You don't have to agree with it or even believe it, but I feel different opinions shoud be accepted and respected within this diverse community.

IMO this is a public board and talking about other members in this thread, or making fun of someone who believe's differently, is something I don't agree with and I realize I am in the minority on that.

Last Fri was the 8th anniversary of my mom's death.............can't help but wonder if she had celiac. Almost lost her many years earlier when I was a kid.......had a busted appendix for 9 days before going to the hospital. I remember she said she just thought it was something she ate. Makes sense that if food was already making her sick, another tummy ache wouldn't have caused her alarm. And she was the kind of person to never let on if she didn't feel good. And that's why colon cancer took her so quickly.

So I thought, even though it's a simple sign, it would be fitting if the sign of the day were......

MOM

Hold hand with all fingers spread, like the number 5, and tap your thumb on your chin

........and since i missed yesterday........here's one to go along with it.........

I love you

With palm facing forward, hold up your thumb, index finger, and pinkie........the other 2 fingers are down. This is a combination of the letters I, L and Y

So sorry. this is really sad. I know my mom had celiac disease too undx'd. the colon cancer was sure not a good thing to have.

QUOTE (jerseyangel @ Aug 5 2008, 11:20 AM)

Amanda--It's nice to hear that your sisters are doing well and are happy!

Didn't know you had so many sisters? Is the one in Italy the one who just got married?

Parents growing old It's hard. My dad is 78 and last night I just thought "Gawd, when I lose him " His cat's been sick and to him, it's the last symbol of my mom in his place. He has been heartbroken (she is doing better though) and it breaks my heart too. Sigh.

Ah Bev.......this is really sad too

QUOTE (DingoGirl @ Aug 5 2008, 02:19 PM)

jess - love yer one-eyed glitter

Parents growing old.......oh god...my mom is 70, but does not have great health (breast cancer twice - first at age 32, w/ 16 lymph nodes removed......second at 40), thyroid cancer, diabetic (celiac in denial), three heart attacks and now a pacemaker (the medieval radiation in the sixties killed part of her lower heart tissue).... I REALLY need my mom to stick around for a while! (oh, Dad died of colon cancer at 56 - CELIAC ALSO)

BUT OMG - you're right - - I felt soooooooo sick yesterday - actually did read about seizure possibility and took half a pill in early evening......slightly better today. Felt like my brain was exploding yesterday, was short of breath, kept blacking out when standing up......

Me thinks you NEED a dr or the pharmacy to tell you how to get off these slowly!!!!

Sorry Jules. The comments aren't meant to be aimed at a person, more at an attitude. And I don't disagree that vaccines have some scary chemicals in them, and some people can be very adversely affected. My point through the whole vaccine thread was: educated yourself as to the pros and cons of what you are considering, and make an informed choice. My disagreement was with the posters that simply said, no, you're wrong. In all cases it's better to get the flu, than get the shot. I don't happen to believe that either viewpoint is true for all cases. You are an individual, and all the data are for populations.

Once again, well said, Jess. I apologise, too, Julie.....my offhanded, sarcastic line was thrown out for these reasons, as well. Informed choices, and most of all, an open mind, are always needed. :)

Oh, Julie! we ARE very naughty for talking about people here.

I am so sorry if I've offended. I am one of those that's confused about vaccinations (this comes from one with no children, mind you).....it seems that many kids HAVE gotten sick from vaccines, no denying. Heck, I didn't give Stinker any shots for the last 11 years of her life, and Annie only gets rabies shots.....

I think it's the extreme mindset. Jess said it better than any of can, of course. It's the unwillingness to consider other options, maybe? But crap, I have read sooooooo many accounts of children who DID change dramatically after a vaccine......it can't be ignored.

but - what in hell do I know????????? I don't really read those threads. boggles me mind.

thank you, sillies, for your advice. But, um, who needs a doc when you've got google? :P I actually KNOW the correct weaning system. I just spaced out, completely spaced out and didn't THINK about weaning....so....I"ve reviewed the protocol and think I'll be okay.....

but.....I actually think I"m beyond the help of a doctor......unless there was a really good one here. :( My mom wishes there could be an MRI of my brain. I seriously think it's ruined.

My mom wishes there could be an MRI of my brain. I seriously think it's ruined.

OMG..........I had an MRI of me brain done two summers ago (that's BRAIN, not BRIAN.......hmmmm....might be nice to have him MRI'd.... <_< ) and the neurologist showed me these incredible pics of the results - - lots of squished-up jelly material, some cloudy stuff that could explain a number of my traits, and some equally telling, I'm sure, empty spaces.

There was also this rather shocking, lightening-rod looking thing coming right up the centRE of my brain and ending in a splotch within my cerebrum.:unsure: He tut-tutted quietly and said it was nothing at all significant, sumfin' that had been there since I was in utero, some little funny thing.....had a long, Latinate name.

This thing may actually explain a fair amount about me......... . . . . ..<_<

It would have been great to ask him for small printoffs of these images.....could keep one in me wallet. All those who ask to see current photos of the kids could be treated to, "Oh! You MUST see this latest shot of my brain".......

Jules- My apologies too- many people have bad experiences with different things (uhm like ticks  ) and just because one person's experience was different from the general population doesn't mean it wasn't valid and BAD. I missed the vaccination thread but I can tell you that, right now, I would not get any vaccination based on people's experiences in my life (heck- look what happened with the Lyme vaccine)I hope you will accept my apology.

Thanks Em, well said. I also regret being flippant about a subject so sensitive.

Truthfully, all of you here in Sillyville have become a little lifeline for me--I feel fortunate to have this place to escape to. :D

Me too!

And Jess- agreed-it's the attitude that you are wrong- my experience is the only truth. That is disrespectful (and kind of surprising given what many people have been through). I listen to two things: my body and my mind. But that doesn't mean that your body is wrong 'cuz it's different (your brain, my dear Jess, is CLEARLY wrong :P ).

Jules- Will you come back? :(

And that infrared light therapy? Totally bogus. That fact that it can cause Open Original Shared Link in some people, well, that doesn't mean that it's actually penetrating the skin.

Actually the concept that each individual is (genetically) unique is the basis of what we do in this lab. Ultimately it would be nice to have a gander at someone's genes and know if radiation is going to cause excess breakage, or vancomycin is slowly metabolized so you should give less, or this guy's gonna die from legionnaire's if he's not treated, or this lady will recover from her viral infection, but if you give her antibiotics because she's demanding them you'll end up causing an autoimmune reaction.

Yes, chemicals are bad for people, but they are less bad for some, and more bad for others.

@klmgarland, My dermatitis herpetiformis didn't clear up until I became meticulous about cross contamination. I cut out gluten-free oats and all gluten-free foods, dairy and gluten-free rice. Additionally, getting the right amount of protein for my body weight helped significantly in my body's healing process ... along with supplementing with enough of all the vitamins and minerals ... especially Zinc and Magnesium. I went from 70kg to 82kg in a year. Protein with each meal 3 times daily, especially eggs at breakfast made the difference. I'm not sure whether iodine was a problem for me, but I can tolerate iodine no problem now. I'm off Dapsone and feel great. Not a sign of an itch. So there is hope. I'm not advocating for the use of Dapsone, but it can bring a huge amount of relief despite it's effect on red blood cells. The itch is so distracting and debilitating. I tried many times to get off it, it wasn't until I implemented the changes above and was consistent that I got off it. Dermatitis Herpetiformis is horrible, I wouldn't wish it on anyone.
    • klmgarland
Thank you so very much Scott.  Just having someone understand my situation is so very helpful.  If I have one more family member ask me how my little itchy skin thing is going and can't you just take a pill and it will go away and just a little bit of gluten can't hurt you!!!! I think I will scream!!
    • Scott Adams
It is difficult to do the detective work of tracking down hidden sources of cross-contamination. The scenarios you described—the kiss, the dish towel, the toaster, the grandbaby's fingers—are all classic ways those with dermatitis herpetiformis might get glutened, and it's a brutal learning curve that the medical world rarely prepares you for. It is difficult to have to deal with such hyper-vigilance. The fact that you have made your entire home environment, from makeup to cleaners, gluten-free is a big achievement, but it's clear the external world and shared spaces remain a minefield. Considering Dapsone is a logical and often necessary step for many with DH to break the cycle of itching and allow the skin to heal while you continue your detective work; it is a powerful tool to give you back your quality of life and sleep. You are not failing; you are fighting an incredibly steep battle. For a more specific direction, connecting with a dedicated celiac support group (online or locally) can be invaluable, as members exchange the most current, real-world tips for avoiding cross-contamination that you simply won't find in a pamphlet. You have already done the hardest part by getting a correct diagnosis. Now, the community can help you navigate the rest. If you have DH you will likely also want to avoid iodine, which is common in seafoods and dairy products, as it can exacerbate symptoms in some people. This article may also be helpful as it offers various ways to relieve the itch:

It's very frustrating to be dismissed by medical professionals, especially when you are the one living with the reality of your condition every day. Having to be your own advocate and "fight" for a doctor who will listen is an exhausting burden that no one should have to carry. While that 1998 brochure is a crucial piece of your personal history, it's infuriating that the medical system often requires more contemporary, formal documentation to take a condition seriously. It's a common and deeply unfair situation for those who were diagnosed decades ago, before current record-keeping and testing were standard. You are not alone in this struggle.
    • Scott Adams
Methylprednisolone is sometimes prescribed for significant inflammation of the stomach and intestines, particularly for conditions like Crohn's disease, certain types of severe colitis, or autoimmune-related gastrointestinal inflammation. As a corticosteroid, it works by powerfully and quickly suppressing the immune system's inflammatory response. For many people, it can be very effective at reducing inflammation and providing rapid relief from symptoms like pain, diarrhea, and bleeding, often serving as a short-term "rescue" treatment to bring a severe flare under control. However, experiences can vary, and its effectiveness depends heavily on the specific cause of the inflammation. It's also important to be aware that while it can work well, it comes with potential side effects, especially with longer-term use, so it's typically used for the shortest duration possible under close medical supervision. It's always best to discuss the potential benefits and risks specific to your situation with your gastroenterologist.
