Is gluten-free Rice Chex Actually gluten-free?

I haven't. I have a mild reaction to the Honey Nut ones but not sure what does it yet. As long as the box says gluten-free, you're good to go unless you have a sensitivity to something else in it.

I had it two mornings in a row at my gramma's house, and it didn't bother me at all. I've never bought a whole box, but many, many cereals do not agree with me. It tastes a little reminiscent of cardboard though... you might want to add some berries or something to it.

I haven't tried any of the flavored ones, as I've heard they contain soy, and soy does make me sick.

So I am the odd one out because they don't agree with me at all. I've tried them at least 6 times and get the same pesky feeling for about 2 days. I am pretty darn sensitive and most grains don't agree with me - especially when processed to the level of Rice Chex so I'm not necessarily fingering gluten. I've run across a few posters here who don't do well with them for various reasons.

Three of us are celiac in this household and we don't react to Rice Chex. My daughter is very sensitive and she is good with it - she is my gauge. Hope that you find what it is!

I have not had any trouble with any of the flavors- I eat them every morning and sometimes during the day as a snack.

Same here . . . I think we've tried all the flavours now . . . they're not just for breakfast at our house.

My dd reacts to the Honey Nut and Corn Chex....I don't think it's gluten though, but rather the whole grains b/c she's fine with the Rice Chex. I also seem to have a problem with most whole grains, we've really had to cut back on the baked goods ( I use brown rice flour) and whole grains in general. Why we are having problems with grains now after years of gluten free has me completely stumped, but I guess the journey with Celiac is never ending.

I really think the Rice Chex is gluten free.....my dd is a good gauge of any tidbit of gluten b/c she is super sensitive, and these don't give her a problem. Hope that helps.

Corn Chex are not gluten free, also it does not say it is on the box.

Check your local store for the NEW Corn Chex which ARE gluten free and say it on the box. If you dont see it, then the stores are still using up old inventory.

Corn chex has also been reformulated to be gluten-free. Make sure you look for gluten-free on the packaging, as there may be some old boxes still floating around.

This weekend when I was shopping for cereal I must have seen the old boxes. It is exciting that corn chex will also be gluten free.

I ate a bowl of the new gluten-free Rice Chex this morning at breakfast. If there was a problem I would have known by now. Life is good. (An angel who was traveling to the US brought me back some gluten-free Chex and a supply of US, gluten-free, Lea & Perrins Worcestershire sauce).

I had problems with rice chex, but I am very sensitive and can't eat many processed foods.

Are you using cow's milk on the cereal? If you are I wonder if you are having issues with dairy products.

I have had Betty Crockeer cakes and I had no problems, however, Chex gluten free products are causing me abdominal cramps and my feces are really bad, I just wonder whether chex is really gluten free. I drink regular milk now, I had issues before like gas, diarrhea, bloating but after being gluten free all those issues are gone so I don't think, in my case, it is related to milk proteins, I think Chex should check on its product processing.

I looked at a box of the Cinnamon Chex at the store recently, and put it back since it contained peanut flour. That ingredient would have caused a reaction for me similar to gluten since I'm intolerant to legumes. Perhaps there's an ingredient in the cereal that you are sensitive to?

I have had peanuts before but I never experienced any problems; I also checked the ingredients on the side of the Chex box and I didn't find anything that I could also be sensitive to. I suggest they might be having problems with their machines using them for gluten free and non gluten free products, I know I'm not alone feeling bad after eating this cereal.

Feeling bad after eating them is not the same as having a gluten reaction. I feel bad after I eat watermelon but it's not from gluten. Look over your diet carefully before you accuse a company of cross contamination.

I'm not picking on you but it's not fair to assume that every tummy rumble after a new food is introduced is gluten. And if you decide that Chex are cross contaminated, it's your right to not eat them. But you can't authoritatively state that they are contaminated.

I agree with Trillumhunter on this one.

I eat rice chex with no problems but eating the chocolate and honey nut chex made me pretty sick. but my symptoms did not follow y normal gluten symptom timeline. honey nut gave me really bad headachs and stomach cramps and the chocolate just made me extremely nauseous. i do not blame gluten ot CC rather it may just be one of those things i just cannot agree with. i have looked over the ingredients and didnt find anything that would be questionable for me.

i thought about making a marshmallow treat with one and seeing if i could eat it in another form. if not, feed 'em to my hubby and his friends!

Look there is a possibility that they """""MIGHT""""" be having a cross contamination. No one wants to sue them, no one wants accuse them falsely, it's just a SUGGESTION. That's right it's my right not to eat them therefore I won't eat them. I wish there could be more companies making gluten free products like Chex, I'm just stating what I felt after eating them for a week. I'm not picking on on Chex company as well. I can say that after eating Betty Crocker products I didn't feel a thing but others might disagree and it's their right to express it; we all have different degrees of tolerance to different products and we all have different symptoms. It's good to have a database regarding these issues so people that have the same symptoms feel they are not alone, that's the purpuse of this forum, please, understand I am not picking on any company.

Perhaps the Rice Chex reaction poll ought to get more specific.

Maybe those who react to it all live in a certain part of the country, or have bought boxes made from the same batch. Maybe they are all super-sensitive, and react to the tiniest trace of gluten, left by the stock boy who had just finished munching a sandwich before unloading the boxes.

Maybe it has nothing to do with gluten at all--they could be reacting to something else entirely. Or they could be reacting to some other source of gluten. BUT IT'S NOT IMPOSSIBLE FOR THEM TO BE RIGHT, EITHER.

No, they can't fairly state that all Rice Chex is not gluten-free. But instead of dismissing their complaints, it would be more productive to find out why there are complaints in the first place.

Remember the Wellshire Farms gluten-free chicken nugget fiasco last summer? (Or was it the summer before?) Chicken that was labeled as gluten-free, which supposedly did not contain any gluten ingredients, tested as HAVING gluten, and at extremely high levels. And it was never even recalled!

The point is, mistakes--even in gluten-free facilities--CAN happen. A supplier might ship the wrong flour. The receiver might miss the fact that it's the wrong flour.

This is a small community. A suggestion can quickly turn into, "Oh, I don't eat those because they have an issue with cross-contamination." It happens. I've been at this for less than five years and I've seen it over and over. Even Kinnikinnick has been accused of it! Now, General Mills can take that hit. If gluten-free cereals don't pay off for them, they'll drop them and continue on. I don't think these smaller companies can do that. People stand to lose everything over mere suggestions.

Like I said, I'm not picking at you. I pretty much jump in to each post like this to say this same stuff. I absolutely believe you had trouble with them and may not be able to enjoy them. And that stinks. It's tough because they don't cost and arm and leg and they're easy to find. But our digestive systems are just different, I suppose. <_<

I have no problems with Rice Chex but bought the cinnamon one's without closely reading the ingredients (I know better than that!) and I reacted to the milk powder. I am very dairy sensitive, not every reaction means gluten. Sorry that some are having problems. It's so nice to buy a gluten-free cereal in a regular grocery store and not spend over 5.00 for a box!

      I did ... But aren't we going to be vitamin deficienct if we are not eating due to being sick ?? If the food we eat is gluten free and we have other sensitivities , how do we get out of the cycle??  Thank you

      Anyone else get pins and needles. ??? Burning feeling ? Heat makes it so much worse 😔  Winter is here.  I had to lower my thermostat because I couldn't take that hot air feeling 😔  Hopefully it goes away soon

      I assume that you already know that genetic testing for celiac disease cannot be used to confirm a celiac diagnosis. About 40% of the general population has the genetic potential to develop celiac disease but only about 1% actually develop celiac disease. It can be used to rule out celiac disease with a high degree of confidence, however, in the case where the genetic testing is negative for the genes. Until and unless you are actually diagnosed with celiac disease I would not raise this as an issue with family. However, if you are diagnosed with celiac disease through blood antibody testing and/or endoscopy with positive biopsy I would suggest you encourage first degree relatives to also purse testing because there is a significant chance (somewhere betwee 10% and almost 50%, depending on which studies you reference) that they will also have or will develop active celiac disease. Often, there are symptoms are absent or very minor until damage to the small bowel lining or other body systems becomes significant so be prepared that they may blow you off. We call this "silent celiac disease".

      If you were off gluten for two months that would have been long enough to invalidate the celiac blood antibody testing. Many people make the same mistake. They experiment with the gluten free diet before seeking formal testing. Once you remove gluten from the diet the antibodies stop being produced and those that are already in circulation begin to be removed and often drop below detectable levels. To pursue valid testing for celiac disease you would need to resume gluten consumption equivalent to the amount found in 4-6 slices of wheat bread daily for at least two weeks, preferably longer. These are the most recent guidelines for the "gluten challenge". Without formal testing there is no way to distinguish between celiac disease and gluten sensitivity since their symptoms overlap. However, celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that damages the small bowel lining, not true of gluten sensitivity. There is no test available for gluten sensitivity so celiac disease must first be ruled out. By the way, elevated liver enzymes was what led to my celiac diagnosis almost 25 years ago.

      Then it does not seem to me that a gluten-related disorder is at the heart of your problems, unless that is, you have refractory celiac disease. But you did not answer my question about how long you had been eating gluten free before you had the blood antibody test for celiac disease done.
