I seem to get acid reflux after eating an apple with p-nut butter on it for my morning snack. Anyone else have problems with apples? It's not all the time, just some of the time.

Are you sure it's not the peanutbutter? Some brands of peanut butter use soy oil, and many gluten intolerants also have problems with soy.

Are the apples that you eat really shiney? It could also be the wax that they put over the apple, which usually contains casein or soy. So try to avoid those waxy glossy apples

To see if your having issues with the wax try peeling the apples. The advice to look for a nut butter without soy is also a good one. The soy oil will be clearly labeled on the jar.

we've been eating sunflower seed butter here, since I didn't want to give my 9 month old nut butters of any variety yet. I find it quite tasty! (and so does she ;) )

I can't eat a whole raw apple with the skin. Peeled, its okay. Cooked, its okay. But raw with the skin - horrible stomach pains and gas. Apples are high in fructose apparently which makes them hard to digest. Try peeling or cooking them.

if i ate an apple (fructose) & peanut butter (legumes)- i would be out of commision for the rest of the day- laying on a heating pad, feeling like i wish i had an epidural so i couldnt feel the wheelbarrow of rocks i had in my intestines :angry:

interesting about the soy oil... i havent been able to eat my almond butter lately- it makes me burp and makes me nauseaus- im thinking the Palm Oil ???

hhmmm... apples are also actually acidic.. but i dont think ive ever gotten reflux from them? just nausea sometimes & cramping

Yes! I used to get acid reflex with them also, when I was first diagnosed. I thought maybe I was allergic to them at first. But, like everyone else says, they are hard to digest & if your small intestines aren't healed yet you might just have a hard time digesting them.

The good news is this might just be temporary. My dietitian recommended me to stop eating them for a while. I stopped for about 4-5 months.

I can eat them with out any problems now. Hopefully it will be the same for you! :)

I used to get horrible heart burn when I ate regular PB, when I switched to an all natural PB I no longer got heart burn.

Now I used to get major cramping after eating an apple, so I stopped eating them for awhile and no longer have a problem with them anymore. I dont eat them as often anymore so not sure if that is the reason.

Yep, Skippy has soy, so I will try and find a natural p-nut butter and maybe lay off apples for a while - or just put them in my juicer so my body can digest them easier. :) Thanks for all of the replies!

When it comes to any peanut butter ALWAYS opt for all natural and one with 100% peanuts, that way you won't be wondering if some other random ingredient may be causing chaos to your systems.

For example, the ingredients of Peter Pan peanut butter: Roasted peanuts, sugar, partially hydrogenated vegetable oils (cottonseed and rapeseed), salt. Hmmm

I have had problems with coated apples. I do fine with uncoated apples which I can get at the Farmer's Market.

No, apples and PB have been one thing I have been eating a lot of since the diagnosis. I agree it might be a morning thing though, I usually eat them in afternoon. Maybe try changing the time up?

I can eat any variety of apples with red skin, but green apples always bother my stomach. I thought this was the oddest thing until one day I was having a random conversation with someone who mentioned they are allergic to green apples and not other types of apples. Apparently it has to do with the type of trees they grow on. I never really researched it to confirm this theory but I stay away from green apples now.

interesting tip- i think too that the stomach acid content is highest in the morning.. also in chinese medicine- i think the stomach meridian time slot is like 9am-11am

before i ever discovered my favorite diet- i learned after years of suffering that if i was ever going to drink orange juice- it could only be in the evening... if i drank it in the morning- i usually ended up kneeling over the toilet

      @klmgarland, My dermatitis herpetiformis didn't clear up until I became meticulous about cross contamination. I cut out gluten-free oats and all gluten-free foods, dairy and gluten-free rice. Additionally, getting the right amount of protein for my body weight helped significantly in my body's healing process ... along with supplementing with enough of all the vitamins and minerals ... especially Zinc and Magnesium. I went from 70kg to 82kg in a year. Protein with each meal 3 times daily, especially eggs at breakfast made the difference. I'm not sure whether iodine was a problem for me, but I can tolerate iodine no problem now. I'm off Dapsone and feel great. Not a sign of an itch. So there is hope. I'm not advocating for the use of Dapsone, but it can bring a huge amount of relief despite it's effect on red blood cells. The itch is so distracting and debilitating. I tried many times to get off it, it wasn't until I implemented the changes above and was consistent that I got off it. Dermatitis Herpetiformis is horrible, I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

      Thank you so very much Scott.  Just having someone understand my situation is so very helpful.  If I have one more family member ask me how my little itchy skin thing is going and can't you just take a pill and it will go away and just a little bit of gluten can't hurt you!!!! I think I will scream!!

If you have DH you will likely also want to avoid iodine, which is common in seafoods and dairy products, as it can exacerbate symptoms in some people.
